SUMMARY:Education and Socialism 1: Bullshit Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:TicketsWhy do educators spend so much time ticking boxes and what should we do about it? \nIn this first session of Education and Socialism\, we look at David Graeber’s concept of ‘Bullshit Jobs’ and ask how far we can apply it to education. \nWe would probably not write off the education sector as one which produces no value for society\, however speak to any education professional at random and they are likely to mention a rise in pointless admin tasks over the years. If education is so socially valuable\, why does so much of the work within it feel like such a waste of time? How can we best highlight tasks that aren’t worth doing? How can we effectively resist bullshit in our workplaces? \nSuggested reading:\nBullshit Pedagogy – Stuart Bracewell – pages 6-7 here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x33gWKSltMyWNASTJXUdAyrKOL-vI8Ua/view?usp=drive_link\nDavid Graeber – ‘On the phenomena of bullshit jobs’ – a short article which inspired the book https://libcom.org/article/phenomenon-bullshit-jobs-david-graeber\nBullshit Jobs – available on Spotify as an audiobook. \nThese are just suggestions in order of relevance and accessibility. Don’t worry if you don’t read all the reading. Turning up and taking part is more important. \nThe session will be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format\, which means that it’ll be interactive and participatory\, with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n————————\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. SUMMARY:Talking to Your Neighbours About Palestine
DESCRIPTION:TicketsDo you want to take action for Palestine but don’t feel confident in having conversations about it? Do you worry there could be difficult questions that you wouldn’t know how to answer? The Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone campaign are here to deliver their workshop on talking to your neighbours about Palestine. \nThe BAFZ campaign was set up this summer to support the struggle for Palestinian freedom. They aim to build a boycott of Israeli goods\, first with local shops in Easton and St Pauls\, and then spreading further through our city. \nThe first part of this event will be a short talk and Q&A about the BAFZ. The second half will be an interactive workshop\, practicing those conversations so you’re ready to spread the word. SUMMARY:Socialism or Barbarism: studying Rosa Luxemburg
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIntroduction – who was Rosa Luxemburg?\nThe first event in our series on Rosa Luxemburg. Suggested reading for this session TBC! \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \n——————————— \nRosa Luxemburg was a Polish revolutionary socialist\, Marxist and anti-war activist. She was a a key figure of the revolutionary socialist movements of Poland and Germany during the late 19th and early 20th century. She made significant contributions to socialist theory and knowledge including being the first theorist to identify ideas that developed into concepts such as imperialism\, globalisation and the military industrial complex. \nThis seven week course will examine Rosa Luxembourg’s contribution to theory regarding economics\, identity\, militarism\, strikes\, and revolution\, as well as exploring the context of her life. All are welcome\, with little or no previous knowledge of her work. Each week we will identify a selection of her writing before the session so people can familiarise themselves\, but we hope that people with a variety of levels of knowledge will attend. \nThese events will happen at 6:30pm on Tuesdays on Feb 6th\, Feb 20th\, Mar 5th\, Mar 19th\, Apr 2nd\, Apr 16th\, and Apr 30th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:Liberation Theology - Religion & Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Tickets“When I feed the poor they call me a saint. When I ask why so many people are poor they call me a communist.” – Hélder Câmara \nThis week we look at liberation theology: a combination of Christian social teaching and Marxist socio-political analysis. \nMany proponents of liberation theology were involved in Latin American revolutions and activism but the focus on the oppressed worldwide has led to the approach being applied to black and queer liberation\, amongst other strands of social justice. Does it mean anything to say that ‘Jesus was a communist?’ Is organised religion always inherently oppressive? What can socialists learn from the way that the Church still manages to reach and influence the world’s poor an oppressed worldwide? \nSuggested (but optional!) reading/listening:\n– these two episodes of The Magnificast: The CIA & Liberation Theology / Saint Oscar Romero and the Option for the Poor\n– this episode of Bread & Rosaries\n– Chapter 20 of The Gospel in Solentiname \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \n\nWhat is the relationship between religion and socialism? Should there even be one? What can a largely secular movement take and learn from faith traditions? How can leftwing and faith communities work together to improve society today? \nFollowing on from the successful/insightful/interesting panel session at this year’s Bristol Transformed\, BT is starting a reading and discussion group along similar themes. Each month we will pursue a different set theme with the discussion based loosely around a choice of reading – Introductory\, further and podcast options will be available to suit your expertise\, interests and time constraints. \nOver the course of the year we intend to cover the Marxist approach to religion\, the history of how religious and leftwing political movements have influenced each other and start to consider what the modern left could learn from religious practices. \nWe welcome participation from all people: those of all faiths\, all political beliefs and none are invited to join the discussion. \nThe sessions will mostly be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format which means that they are interactive and participatory with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDon’t worry if you’re worrying about managing to complete the reading. Do your best. Turning up and taking part is more important. \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. The sessions will take place on the following Tuesdays: Jan 16th\, Feb 13th\, Mar 12th\, and Apr 9th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:Religion and Socialism #2
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn this second session we will look at Marx’s own view on religion. Is religion always an ‘opiate of the masses’\, a blinding ideology that stops revolutionary potential? Or is religion necessary in a painful world? Readings to follow. The sessions will take place on the following Tuesdays: Sept 19th\, Oct 10th\, Nov 7th\, Dec 5th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:'The Deep' Discussion Group with Bristol Utopian Book Collective
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe Deep by Rivers Solomon is a short novel about mer-people descended from pregnant enslaved Africans thrown overboard on the passage across the Atlantic\, whose existence is threatened again by prospectors looking for deep sea oil beds. The book\, and the mythology it is part of\, have inspired real life memorials to enslaved Africans who died at sea. We’ll be discussing how fiction can help us think about racial justice and climate justice\, and inspire us to action. \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book in advance or pay on the door. \nSome extra credit reading that will give you an idea of what you might expect\, both by Bristol Utopian Book Collective’s Sheryl M Medlicott…\n★ ‘It is time to challenge colonial ways of thinking wherever they are found within our culture’\n★ Literature and Activism: Octavia Butler\, farming and community \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. Running at PRSC during April 2022\, the events are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment\, so we offer pay-what-you-can solidarity pricing with no-one turned away through lack of funds. Please donate to help us keep the School of Activism affordable to all!
