SUMMARY:FOCUS CONGO
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\n\nPresented by BadApple\, Friends of Congo\, School of Activism & SOLiD\nAfter the powerful success of our first event\, Focus on Congo returns for Round 2\, this time at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft. \nOn this night\, we gather once again in solidarity with the Congolese people\, raising funds for Focus Congo\, an organisation working directly with families impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. \nThis fundraiser will bring together activists\, artists\, speakers\, and the Bristol community for an evening of food\, culture\, and action. \nWHAT TO EXPECT \nTalks & Panel Discussions:\nFeaturing Bad Apple\, shedding light on corporate exploitation and the urgent need to boycott Apple for its role in Congo’s cobalt crisis. Friends of Congo and the School of Activism will also lead conversations\, alongside speakers from Congo including author Lildonia Lawrence\, sharing insights from her book Back Yourself: A Self-Care Guide to Healing from Racial Trauma. \nPoetry & Performance:\nWith powerful contributions from Poet Lawrence Hoo and local performers using art to amplify truth. \nCultural Food & Merchandise:\nEnjoy freshly made African cuisine\, and explore new fundraiser merchandise — including badges\, posters\, and stickers\, with all proceeds going to Focus Congo. \nCommunity Energy:\nExpect a night of solidarity\, reflection\, and cultural celebration\, designed not only to raise funds but to deepen awareness of Congo’s struggles and resilience. \nWhy it matters:\nCongo is at the heart of the global tech economy\, providing the majority of the world’s cobalt — a key mineral in phones\, laptops\, and electric cars. Behind these devices lies a story of exploitation\, child labour\, displacement\, and political violence. Yet the people of Congo continue to resist\, organise\, and survive. \nBy coming together\, we show that Bristol is not silent. We stand in solidarity\, we educate ourselves and each other\, and we raise real funds that will have a direct impact on Congolese families through Focus Congo. \nThe struggle in Congo is global\, and so is our solidarity. Join us for a night of community\, creativity\, and commitment. \nGoFundMe link: https://gofund.me/d5d030840 \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

SUMMARY:School of Activism: A movement of movements for Bristol?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nBristol is a city full of energy and vibrant alternative initiatives\, but they don’t always connect well together. The idea of a ‘movement of movements’ suggests that organizing might to scale out and scale up if it is to be able to address the polycrisis that faces us\, but for many organizers it is scale that is the problem. Ideas such as prefiguration\, horizontalism\, localism and so on tend to focus on the small and specific and to be suspicious of political parties\, the state and established institutions. In this event we want to think about longer term strategic aims and wider social transformation. Is it possible to think about the Bristol city region ecosystem in ways that are more strategic and systemic? Can we co-ordinate our activities so that the many local and particular forms of activism can become a rising tide of change which is impossible to ignore? \nJoin us for an evening of discussion with academics\, activists and local groups. Although entry is free\, capacity is limited\, so please get a ticket to secure your place. \nTimings:\n5 :30 pm Food for voluntary donation. The evening will start with early with food for those who want to come\, eat and meet like-minded others.\n6:30 pm Panel Discussion\n7.30 pm Audience discussion with members from local groups \nGuest Panel Speakers: \nRodrigo Nunes\, University of Essex \nA senior lecturer in political theory and organisaton at the University of Essex and the author of Neither Vertical Nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organisation (Verso\, 2021) and The View from Brazil: Neoliberalism\, the Far Right and the Grammar of Disintegration (Verso\, forthcoming). \nMakeda Bernard-Quashie\, Afrikan ConneXions Consortium \nBrings a breadth of knowledge and experience to a diverse range of Black civic society and economic activities. She is committed to developing the mutual sector and is currently co-ordinating the development of Zenzele Village – an intergenerational cooperative land and legacy initiative for Afrikan community self-repair. \nStephen Hilton\, Slowmentum \nSlowmentum is a consultancy working for an inclusive regenerative economy. It operates in the nexus between local authorities\, and local communities\, with a commitment to sustainable cities and community activism. Before founding Slowmentum\, Stephen was Director of the Bristol Futures Department at Bristol City Council. \nFriends from AngryWorkers/ Vital Signs Magazine \nThe AngryWorkers are a political collective who organise as workers in industries. In 2020 they published Class Power on Zero Hours\, about their experiences in warehouses and food factories in West London. Vital Signs Magazine is an AngryWorkers magazine by a small group of workers across the two main hospitals in Bristol. \nFacilitated by Claudia Firth and Martin Parker from the University of Bristol Business School. \nClaudia is a researcher working on the Fair Creative Economies project. She is interested in questions of organising\, alternative economies and strategy and coordination. She has written about the contribution economy\, mutual aid\, and prefigurative politics and has worked closely with community activist groups including being involved in the Bristol Commons. Martin is Professor of Organization Studies and author of (among other things) Shut Down the Business School (Pluto 2018). \nMembers from other Bristol based groups will also join us including Acorn\, Bristol Apartheid Free Zone\, Bristol Transformed\, and the Bristol Commons. This event is financially supported by the University of Bristol Business School. \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

By creating a cast of my body\, I gave body to the external perspective of what it’s like to take care of myself. With this project\, I aim to make people intrigued by the weirdness that this video conveys regarding obsessive caring\, and make them reflect on how natural caring should be.” – Maria Martinez \n//PERFORMANCES\\\nLanga Ncube : Spoken Words \nMartin Viktorov and Anastasia: “Spirare” // Experimental electronic music and contemporary dancing\, combining movement and sound. \nSpirare is a sound and movement performance exploring how breath can communicate and transform emotion. It expresses the diverse range of feelings that relationships with our loved ones can stir within us. \n//NETWORKING\\\nFor filmmakers and artists\, we are offering an hour of networking\, a valuable opportunity to deepdive into other projects around the city\, whilst enjoying our art exhibition. \n//EXHIBITION\\\n“Gaia’s Legation” amidst the Cosmos by artist Javeria Salar Khan

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope Fusion Dance
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nWE WANT ALL OF YOU.\nWe throw dance parties where all bodies are invited. You already know how to dance\, we’re just here to give you permission to embrace all of the ways your body wants to move.\nCome alone\, come with friends\, dip in a toe or plunge in the deep end. However you want to party\, we’re here for it. \nSo that everyone feels safe to unleash their full selves on the dancefloor our only rule is to be excellent to one another (aka the “don’t be an asshole” policy). What does that mean? We expect you to be great at respecting other peoples’ boundaries and bodies\, to pay attention\, and to use your words if you’re unsure. Trust us\, asking is way less awkward than getting it wrong. \nLOCAL TEACHERS AND DJS\nWe’ll kick off the evening with an intro to social dancing for anyone who’d like some tips on dancing with a partner\, before local DJ’s get us moving with tracks ranging from slow and squishy to high-energy bangers. \nNo partner or experience necessary\, just bring yourself and shoes you can move in. \nLINE-UP\n7.30pm doors\n7.45pm all-levels workshop\n8.45pm our DJ’s bring the party \nACCESS\nThe venue is all on one level from pavement to dancefloor. There is a single-user\, unadapted bathroom on the same level. \nIf you want to attend the class and might need some modifications\, DM or email email hidden; JavaScript is required so we can make sure our teaching meets your needs. \nBROKE?\nIf you can’t afford a ticket and want to come dancing\, email email hidden; JavaScript is required and we’ll try to help. \nWHAT THE F IS FUSION?\nFusion is partner dancing\, without the baggage. We’re not here to stick to a rigid set of steps\, but to actually dance with another person to good music on a night out. Fusion is all about improvisation\, connecting with your partner and seeing what happens. We don’t care if you’ve never danced before\, as long as you’re having a good time. \nFusion gets it’s name from fusing different styles of dance – maybe you’ve danced blues\, tango\, lindy\, west coast swing or hip hop or maybe you just like to get on the dance floor and shake it\, you have something to bring! \nFor us\, fusion is more than a dance\, it’s also a way of living the future we want to build. That means it is queer\, it is feminist\, and we don’t want anyone left behind. \nSliding scale: £5 (low income)\, £8 (general release)\, £15 (pay-it-forward) // Buy tickets » \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

SUMMARY:Workshop: Co-Create a Mural with The Bristol Commons
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative design process & creative visual storytelling\nYou are invited to join The Bristol Commons to co-create a mural at PRSC! \nWe will begin by exploring the story of the commons\, looking back at its place in Bristol’s history and investigating the present landscape\, before radically imagining a city transformed by commoning. Through creative workshops we will explore collaborative visual story-telling and collective visioning\, the fruits of which will be woven into a mural design that will be communally painted on PRSC’s famous Outdoor Gallery wall! \nThe creation of this mural wall is an act of commoning itself! We invite you to participate in painting our collective story on the streets of Bristol. Through this\, we are re-commoning the streets themselves and growing a living commons. \nThere will be an introduction to the Bristol Commons\, and a presentation looking at muralism around the world and its historical relation to the commons. \nUsing collage poster making\, we will explore and develop work around the history of community spaces in Bristol. There will also be mapping\, written word (poetry) and group drawing workshops. \nThis is a playful and uncensored creative space where all are welcome! We will collaboratively imagine the mural design\, creating a tapestry woven with the voices of the people and our ideals for a future of the commons in Bristol. These works will be re-composed and scaled up onto the 9ft x 60ft wall – join us later in the week to help paint it! \nAll materials will be provided\, however feel free to bring relevant materials to reference/include around the Bristol Commons ethos. \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Spring // Friday 12 - Sunday 21 April 2024\nThe People's Art Fair encompasses a group exhibition\, performances and creative workshops & activities! SUMMARY:Global Citizenship Education Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register for your free ticket\nWe are very excited to welcome a delegation of reparations activist from Global Citizenship Education for Planet Repairs Action (GCEPRA) based in Ghana on a visit to Bristol. We will be discussing practical links of solidarity between community projects across the UK and in indigenous communities of resistance in West Afrika. \nTogether we will ground in the progressive histories of this city in order to build the internationalist relationships we need as both the UK and Ghana are having election years in 2024. We will be facing different challenges but we are all living under outdated political systems which have opposed struggles for freedom both locally and globally and which are unable to respond to the current social and environmental problems. \nWith the upswell of positive action for self-determination and Planet Repairs\, led by grassroots communities across the world\, this system of domination and violence is on the back foot\, and so we need to get organised and work on tackling the needs of our communities glocally. \nDoors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Food will be available for a donation \nAbout us: \nThe Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution (PRALER) is building relationships between communities globally which are challenging systems of miseducation and developing true education oriented towards tackling the needs of all our communities in a world which is going through multiple crises.

SUMMARY:Community Dinner & Open Meeting for Planet Repairs
DESCRIPTION:Register for your free ticket\nWe have a window of opportunity that only comes every other generation – will we take it or waste it? Across the PRALER network we will take it! Join us and walk as one with communities building a new world of Global Justice. \nWe are launching a series of community dinners and open meetings with the aim to provide an action-learning space for people in Bristol who want to engage in practical ways with communities around the world who are taking back control of their lands and their education. \nThere are many traditions of peoples to peoples solidarity which we have a duty to build on\, such as the hundreds of thousands of people across the UK who 200 years ago boycotted sugar produced through slavery\, or the example of Sylvia Pankhurst who dedicated much of her life in solidarity with the struggle for Afrikan liberation as well as for women’s right to vote. \nWe need to rebuild internationalist networks and institutions so that we can walk as one with our global family and ensure the sharing of knowledge about how we best can enact repair. Together we will explore questions such as: \n\nWhat are the problems and educational needs here in Bristol?\nWhat reparatory actions can we take that are meaningful for communities globally?\nWhat kind of community institutions do we need to build to tackle our problems?\n\nWe hope you will join us\, food and educational material provided. Donations accepted to cover costs and we would appreciate if people register in advance so that we have an idea of numbers. \nAgenda:\n6.30pm – Food and welcome\n7.00pm – What is PRALER and what is happening across the network?\n7.30pm – Discussion in breakout groups about calls to action\n8.15pm – Feedback from breakout groups\n8.45pm – Closing and next steps \nAbout the organiser: \nThe Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution (PRALER) is a process led by communities of resistance in the Global South with the aim to challenge the education system and to build globally connected educational processes for us all to learn what we need to advance environmental\, reparatory and cognitive justice\, otherwise known as Planet Repairs. \nHere in Bristol a Community Of Life-long Learning Study Action Group (COLLSAG) is being organised as an educational space which is accountable and directly linked to the communities of resistance in the Global South which are leading the PRALER process\, and we are organising these open meetings to invite people to join us.\n\nPeople's Art Fair: Winter // Friday 1 - Sunday 10 December 2023\nThe People's Art Fair runs from December 1-10\, and encompasses a group exhibition\, performances and creative workshops & activities! SUMMARY:Just Stop Oil - Welcome Talk with Roger Hallam
DESCRIPTION:Free tickets\nWith special guest speaker Roger Hallam!\n“If governments are serious about the climate crisis\, there can be no new investments in oil\, gas and coal\, from now – from this year.”\nFatih Birol\, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (May 2021) \n“I believe that what we do in the next 3 to 4 years will determine the future of humanity”\nProfessor Sir David King\, former UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (2021) \nAllowing the extraction of new oil and gas resources in the UK is obscene\, a genocidal policy that will kill our children and condemn humanity to oblivion. It just has to stop. \n️There can be no new oil anywhere in the world\, if governments are serious about climate (the IEA). If we continue down our current path it will destroy families and communities. We will face the starvation and the slaughter of billions – and the utter betrayal of our children and this country. \nThis choice of rapid transition to a low energy\, low carbon world or social collapse is now inevitable. We can do it now\, in an orderly manner – creating millions of proper skilled jobs and protecting the rights of workers in sunset industries – or we wait for the unavoidable collapse. \nClimate collapse will mean the end of workers rights\, women’s rights\, all human rights. It is already the greatest injustice visited on the global south in human history. It is time to put everything aside\, it’s either survival solidarity now or collective failure. \nCome and hear more.

SUMMARY:BARC Open House: Re-Visions of Abolition
DESCRIPTION:Join Bristol Anti-Repression Campaign for a screening and discussion of Re-Visions of Abolition: Abolition Past\, Present and Future. \nThe 55 minute film documents the recent history of the prison abolition movement in the US through the organizing efforts of Critical Resistance and explores the meaning of abolitionist politics. By focusing on the collaboration between Critical Resistance Los Angeles Chapter and A New Way of Life\, and seeing how ongoing abolitionist work draws from other liberation movements\, this film unfolds visions of abolition as an ongoing struggle for freedom from destructive carceral systems. \nWe’ll then have a very relaxed discussion of the film.

SUMMARY:No Bigots\, No Binaries – how can we win LGBT+ liberation?
DESCRIPTION:A new generation of LGBT+ people are out—to take on the system. \nThe Tories are ramping up their war on trans and non-binary people. Rishi Sunak blocking Scotland’s GRA reforms is a threat to trans rights across Britain—and part of a right wing backlash against LGBT+ people. \nIt’s not just in Britain. Whether it’s in Italy or Hungary\, far right governments are attacking LGBT+ people under the guise of “gender ideology”. \nUganda’s government recently passed a vicious homophobic law\, building on the legacy of the British Empire. \nLGBT+ oppression is ingrained throughout society\, but it hasn’t always existed. It’s rooted in the development of capitalism and the nuclear family\, and bigoted ideas are pushed from the top of society. \nIn Britain\, we’ve also seen resistance. The Tories blocking Scottish GRA reforms was met by a wave of resistance\, with young and militant protests from London to the Scottish islands. And the vigils for Brianna Ghey brought thousands more onto the streets. \nThe movement has thrown up huge questions—whether it’s about the roots of oppression\, identity politics\, or strategies to win liberation. \nJoin us to discuss where LGBT+ oppression comes from and how we can win liberation.
