SUMMARY:STRATA: A Visual Assembly for Homelessness with IC Visual Lab
DESCRIPTION:Strata: A Visual Assembly for Homelessness is a two day workshop delivered by IC-Visual Lab and inspired by Frequently Asked Questions by Anthony Luvera and Gerald Mclaverty on show at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft in Bristol. At the heart of Frequently Asked Questions is an enquiry into the state of legislated support and services available to homeless people across the United Kingdom\, through number of questions that inquire about a homeless individual’s right to access to basic living provisions such as shelter\, personal safety\, health\, food\, and communication. \nPhotographs play a critical role in defining homelessness\, shaping the way this social issue is understood and acted upon. Using the methodology of The Cage\, IC Visual Lab creates a critical space to re-think the imagery commonly used to represent homelessness\, and to consider different approaches to their production\, consumption and circulation. We will be joined by the archaeologist Rachael Kiddey\, who will share her work in the field of ‘collaborative social archaeology’\, and the artist Anthony Luvera who will speak about his work with people experiencing homelessness using photography\, sound and other media\, as well as Frequently Asked Questions. Drawing upon an archive of images brought together from various fields of study\, including anthropology\, documentary photography\, medicine\, photojournalism\, contemporary art\, and social history collections\, participants will take part in a range of practical and experimental visual exercises to broaden understandings of this complex issue. \nPlease register for your FREE ticket here: https://www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/#date=2019-12-07&event_id=58850 \nSaturday 7th and Sunday 8th December\, 10am–5pm both days \nFAQ Exhibition open 10am-5pm daily from Nov 27 – Dec 12\nLaunch party – Tuesday 26th November\, 6-9pm\nMake Them Count – Wednesday 27th November\, 11am-1pm\nRough State: Panel Discussion with the Bristol Cable – Thursday 28th November\, 6.30-8pm

Displayed artworks can be purchased at the Stokes Croft China shop. \nAs well as providing a canvas for artists to exhibit their work and experiment with weatherproof techniques\, the outdoor gallery aims to give local communities and passers-by a sense of ownership of the public space\, challenging established ideas of private property and commercial enterprise. Hanging the work outside will mean it is vulnerable to vandalism and theft\, therefore trust and respect are central elements of this exhibition.

SUMMARY:Rough State: A Panel Discussion with FAQ and the Bristol Cable
DESCRIPTION:Taking our current exhibition Frequently Asked Questions as its basis\, The Bristol Cable is hosting a public discussion that will explore the broader context around homelessness in Bristol. \nThis event comes at a time when rough sleeping is rising across the UK. In Bristol\, 1000 people faced street homelessness last year – up by nearly a quarter from the year before. Homeless deaths in this city are now the third highest out of any city in the UK. Meanwhile\, Bristol City Council has pledged to “halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eradicate it by 2027″. What are the real causes of homelessness? How can we end this crisis? \nFeaturing a range of contributors\, with perspectives on housing\, welfare\, homelessness services and beyond\, this event will explore the structural barriers to housing and different questions relating to homelessness today. The event will include opportunities for audience members to join the discussion with the speakers. \nSpeakers include: \n\nCharlie Eddisford (CHAS Bristol Housing Advice Service)\nAnthony Luvera (Artist)\nBen Richardson (Caring in Bristol)\nJoe Smith (Crisis)\n\nAbout the Bristol Cable: The Bristol Cable is a media co-operative that produces community-led journalism\, investigating issues in Bristol. We’re a new model of media: a co-operative owned by 2000+ local people. We run events to explore questions that matter and create vital spaces for public discussion in the city. \nVolunteering: If you’d like to volunteer to help host the evening email email hidden; JavaScript is required. Hosts will arrive around an hour early and help set up\, welcome people as they arrive\, tea & coffee and/or help tidy up at the end of the evening – although this is flexible\, depending on how you want to help. Volunteers add so much to our events and we really appreciate this contribution! \nAccessibility: Wheelchairs can access the event space but unfortunately the event toilet is not accessible. The nearest accessible toilet is at The Canteen. The pavement outside the Space is also a bit uneven. If you’d like help entering the space we can arrange for someone to meet you outside. For assistance of this kind or other accessibility needs please get in touch. SUMMARY:Make Them Count
DESCRIPTION:A confidential and safe space to ask questions about homeless deaths and remember people we have lost\, hosted by Museum of Homelessness. \nFrequently Asked Questions shows us that some Local Authorities struggle to support their homeless residents in a meaningful way. Ultimately\, this failure in their duty to society’s most vulnerable people can lead to death. The Dying Homeless Project\, started by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and now carried out by Museum of Homelessness shows a sharp increase in people dying on the streets\, in hostels and in temporary accommodation. \nWe know from our research that many people have lost someone in the last few years\, but there is not often a chance to process this. This event is an invitation for people in Bristol affected by the deaths of people who are homeless to come together and talk about death and homelessness\, share experiences and think about how we as a society can prevent further unnecessary deaths. \nPlease note\, this will not be therapeutic space\, but simply a chance to talk openly and safely about a subject that can be difficult to explore. \nPlease register for your FREE ticket here: https://www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/#date=2019-11-27&event_id=58775 \nWednesday 27th November\, 11am-1pm \nFAQ Exhibition open 10am-5pm daily from Nov 27 – Dec 12\nLaunch party – Tuesday 26th November\, 6-9pm\nRough State: Panel Discussion with the Bristol Cable – Thursday 28th November\, 6.30-8pm\nSTRATA: A Visual Assembly for Homelessness with IC Visual Lab – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December\, 10am–5pm both days

SUMMARY:Frequently Asked Questions Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:If you were homeless\, where would you go for help? Frequently Asked Questions\, a new exhibition by artist Anthony Luvera in collaboration with Gerald Mclaverty\, uncovers the shocking and poignant challenge faced by those asking this one simple question. \nThe culmination of five years research\, Frequently Asked Questions involved Gerald Mclaverty contacting local authorities across the UK to ask how he could access basic living provisions such as shelter\, safety\, healthcare\, food\, and communication. \nOf 110 councils emailed in 2019\, only ten provided answers to questions such as “where can I go for something to eat?”\, “where can I find shelter from when it is raining or snowing?” or “where can I sleep during the night that is safe?” 41 of the councils did not reply at all. With the introduction of the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017\, Councils are now legally bound by new duties in relation to homeless individuals and these findings put their performance in relation to the Act under the microscope. \nAt the heart of Frequently Asked Questions is the enquiry into a homeless person’s rights\, written from Gerald Mclaverty’s personal experience of homelessness\, and requests for information about services provided in each jurisdiction. \nProduced in association with Museum of Homelessness\, the exhibition gives a picture of how services both help and hinder the estimated 320\,000 homeless people in Britain\, and offers an insight into the challenges and realities faced by the most marginalised individuals as they attempt to access systems of care. \nFAQ exhibition open 10am-5pm daily from Nov 27 – Dec 12 \nLaunch party – Tuesday 26th November\, 6-9pm\nMake Them Count – Wednesday 27th November\, 11am-1pm\nRough State: Panel Discussion with the Bristol Cable – Thursday 28th November\, 6.30-8pm\nSTRATA: A Visual Assembly for HomelessnessWorkshop with IC Visual Lab – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December\, 10am–5pm both days

SUMMARY:Bristol Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Throughout July\, we walked the streets of Bristol together\, guiding young people to create images of how they view the city. Capturing the urban landscape\, the group then worked together to create a mural through stencil graffiti art and mixed media. \nJoin us to celebrate this collective piece of art work created by a group of young people on Creative Youth Network’s Creative Careers course\, written and delivered by PRSC. Engaging 16-25 year olds who are not in education\, employment or training\, our courses provide opportunities for young people to grow in confidence and develop transferable skills\, while expressing themselves creatively. \nCome see Bristol through young eyes\, gaining a new perspective of the city we love.

SUMMARY:Dr Alan Kellas Talk & Exhibition Response
DESCRIPTION:Alan Kellas spent over 20 years as psychiatrist working within the NHS\, predominantly in community psychiatry for people with learning disabilities in the Avon area. Over the last few years Alan became interested in the theory and practice of ecopsychologies and ecotherapies. He now looks at how nature in its many forms can be a resource for mental health – by keeping nature in mind in psychotherapies and through horticulture therapies\, animal-assisted therapies and mindfulness practices in nature. \nHe will be giving his response to the curations in the exhibition\, drawing on his experience of practice\, and being mindful of the patient- as the person at the heart of all touch\, and the object of medical practice and training\, and remembering the family and natural world are also touched by this medical interaction.

SUMMARY:Touch: Perspectives from the Medical Humanities
DESCRIPTION:1. Of all the human senses\, touch is the one that is often taken for granted. Unlike the other senses\, however\, it is one that is very rarely lost. This makes it one of the most robust and reliable interactions that humans can have with the outside world. Touch has a preeminent capacity to link with memory\, in order to aid recall or recognition. \n2. Compassion is crucial to understanding patients’ stories and to providing them with care. Touch can be a way of communicating compassion and empathy towards patients. Yet modern technology\, such as imaging\, means care professionals may touch patients less than they would have previously. \n3. Many people feel out of touch with nature and with their own nature. Many assumptions are made about who does and who does not\, or who can and cannot\, appreciate nature and their own nature. \nStudents on the intercalated BA in Medical Humanities have brought together works\, videos and talks from a variety of artists\, academics\, and care professionals based in and around Bristol which explore touch from these three perspectives. \nCurated works include: images of works from the Franko B. archive (with grateful thanks for the permission); works arising out of the collaboration between Georgina Morley (critical care nurse and PhD) and Annie Sharon Fox (artist and art psychotherapist) exploring moral distress; a curated playlist for the exhibition by Yuki Ame; a talk by Dr Alan Kellas on Thursday afternoon; street art going up on the wall by The Bad Doctor; and more to come. \nFAQs \nAccess — The venue is fully wheelchair accessible\, but unfortunately its toilets are not. PRSC intend to adapt the toilets in the future as they continue to develop the building.

SUMMARY:Raise The Roof
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition aims to use art as a way to represent how Bristol’s changing landscape highlights the deepening housing crisis. \nMore than 11\,000 people are on the waiting list for a council house in Bristol alone. This figure is made even more shocking by the fact that over 1\,000 homes lie empty. Average house prices approach £300\,000 and average rents exceed £1\,000 a month. This is a devastatingly harsh reality for around 120 people\, who sleep rough every night in our city and the problem will only deepen with a lack of social housing being built to meet the growing need. In times of austerity\, those most in need are facing the brunt of the crisis. Bristol’s landscape is radially changing and we are seeing a wave of development take place across the city that sadly lack much needed affordable and social housing. This exhibition is a chance for artists to create work in response to these issues and through highlighting them\, we aim to raise awareness\, share knowledge and engage people in current housing campaigns. \nWorking alongside ACORN\, a local community based union of working class people\, artists have used their direct action campaigns as inspiration for the work they have produced. Join us for an evening where creative talent merges with the fight for social change. \nFacebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1933601910084725/ \nBuy tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/raise-the-roof-bristol-exhibition-fundraiser-tickets-60707316217 \nSee more about Acorn here: https://acorntheunion.org.uk/

SUMMARY:Mask Making with Art4Change
DESCRIPTION:Drop in workshop and exhibition\,\nfree entry\,\nsuitable for all ages – just pop in!\n3-6pm \nThe aim of this workshop is to create masks which portray hidden emotions and thoughts\, to give a sense of how people really feel. The masks created in previous workshops will also be exhibited during this session. \nWe all wear ‘masks’ every day – without them our lives would not be possible. However these everyday masks are different from the masks that conceal what shouldn’t be hidden – the painful thoughts and feelings that are associated with Mental Ill Health. \nThis workshop focusses on our relationship with mental illness with a final goal of reducing negative attitudes and raising awareness of the importance of our mental health and how this is viewed in society. \nIt addresses the issue of mental health from 4 perspectives: \n1 – Those experiencing mental illness – young & old \n2 – Those living with people experiencing it \n3 – Those working with people experiencing it \n4 – The wider society \nArt4change is a project aiming to give disadvantaged sections of the community the opportunity to gain self-confidence\, transferable skills and to feel valued\, by creating and exhibiting art work that draws attention to a wide range of social issues. \nThis is a School of Activism workshop\, rescheduled from April due to a bike injury. \n \nThe School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nhttps://prsc.org.uk/school-of-activism/
