DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nBlue Metaphor presents “Stories beyond the Veil”\, the third of a series of themed events bringing all art forms together\, with filmmaking at the centre.\nLed by Bristol -based producer and director Sheherazade Bodin and owner of Blue Metaphor Ltd\, an independent production company aiming to help filmmakers\, writers and any creative voices develop their projects portraying social and/or cultural matters.\n\nThis event is open to all creatives\, those with passion projects looking for production support and any art lovers! \nScreenings and Q&A \n“Echoes”\, a short drama portraying grief and loss\, written and directed by Fiona Kruschnik and produced by Normal Girl Production. \n“Today would’ve been Lily’s Birthday and her best friend Flo\, her older brother Ben\, and her partner Pete meet up to celebrate at her favourite café. This is the first time they have seen each other\, since Lily’s death months ago. Trying to overcome the distance and awkwardness between them\, Flo\, Pete\, and Ben become painfully aware that the only reason they ever had anything to do with each other was Lily.” \nQ&A with Fiona Kruschnik (writer/director)\, Jasmin Batler (producer)\, Casey Raos (director of photography) and Hannah (actress) \n“Ghost Story“\, a drama/horror short written and directed by Daniel Granville \n“Following the sudden death of their long-term and much-too-depended-upon counsellor\, a couple in their 50s take a chaotic stab at rebalancing their relationship\, while grappling with their own mortality” \nQ&A with Daniel Granville (writer/director)\, Joseph Akelakun (producer/actor) and Luke Frsh (director of photography) \n“Bone Marrow Soup“\, an experimental film about an autobiographical journey through years worth of brutality and beauty by Lara Angelina \n“An exploration into the mind in recovery; mourning past versions of yourself and the painful process of shedding old skin behind in order to adorn a new one” \nFollowed by the reading of a note left by the filmmaker \n“Love + Death“\, an experimental film by A1 Vanguard \n“The story talks about love but with a close affinity with Death causing the character to receive love for what it is and yet he is willing to surrender all for it” \nQ&A with A1 Vanguard (Director\, Producer\, Actor and Poet) \nPerformances \nCerulean : “[no] good grief” // Participatory performance \n[no] good grief is Cerulean’s (not so) final Hurrah. It is a celebration\, it is a party\, it is a Funeral. \nAn experiment for mourning in community\, it is a plea to remind the audience that they need not grieve alone. Not all deaths are equal and not everyone gets the after-death process that they want or deserve. This show intends to explore the audience as a necessary participant in the very sad (we are all very sad to hear about the) passing of Cerulean and to test the limits of silence at a wake. \nExploring themes of morality\, Queerness and care from the perspective of a Trans\, working class performer who is certain they will die (if not now then) soon. This is a show for audiences who may one day die…. oh\, wait\, that’s everyone. \nNetworking \nFor filmmakers\, creatives and everyone in between\, we are offering an hour of networking\, a valuable opportunity to deepdive into other projects around the city\, whilst enjoying our art exhibition. \nExhibition \n“Abjection” by artist Lansdall \n“Abjection draws me towards the place where meaning collapses” – Julia Kristeva \nDeath lies on the threshold between two states of being. A fleeting moment of oblivion at the advent of change. In the physical sense\, it is annihilation. Spiritually however\, it is the step towards rebirth and personal growth. This juxtaposition between death and life creates a paradox within us\, where for many in the western world\, the fear of death subtly overlaps with the fear of change. But to truly develop\, that fear must be accepted. This is what we explore in this exhibition; the complex\, intertwining relationships between themes of death\, loss\, rebirth\, and self-fulfilment. \nFood & Drink \nThis event is non-alcoholic. Burmese food and products will also be on sale to support both causes. \nThe Mae Tao Clinic\, located on the Thai-Burma border\, provides essential healthcare to over 100\,000 displaced and vulnerable people each year. From life-saving emergency care to safe childbirth and treatment for chronic illness\, the clinic has stood as a lifeline for Karen and Burmese communities with nowhere else to turn. Your support at this event and beyond can help support the clinic’s ongoing mission to provide critical healthcare to those in need. \nThis photography exhibition\, hosted by Zin Htut\, a Burmese Bristol medical student who worked at the clinic in Autumn 2024\, showcases stories of humanity and resilience. Delicious homemade Burmese food and authentic Burmese products will be on sale to further support both causes\, with 50% of money raised from food sales going to the clinic and 50% going to Myanmar Earthquake Relief. SUMMARY:Threading the Needle: Unravelling the Histories of Women in Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Advocate! Arts to shine a light on invisible struggles and stigma in medicine: an exhibition curated by students on the intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol.\nOpen 11am to 5pm \nThis collection of artworks has been created and collated by Bristol Medical students who have taken a year away from their medical curriculum to study the humanities. \nThreading the Needle aims to trace historical threads in the relationship between women and healthcare cross-culturally\, from both patient and practitioner perspectives. By unpicking the problematic histories of the past\, we can better understand and recognise how their influence lingers today. Charting this timeline allows us not only to celebrate the strides that have been made but also to reflect on the issues which persist and the work still to be done. \nThe choice to tie this exhibition together using thread draws upon a recognition of the intersection between traditional socially-constructed female roles and the spaces modern women are now able to aspire towards and succeed in. The line from needlework and women’s craft to surgical suturing is but one example of where we can find the traditionally feminine in a medical world built on the historic exclusion of women. Such powerful images of continuity may help to expand the opportunities for and agency of women in the sphere of healthcare. \nTea and coffee available \nAll are very welcome

SUMMARY:An Evening in Solidarity: Palestinian Relief
DESCRIPTION:TicketsHosted in partnership with Bristol Palestine Museum and Bristol Solidarity Cafe\, this fundraiser directly supports Ibrahim\, his family\, and their vital relief efforts through Al Nasser Charitable Society. Join us on February 8th as art\, music\, and community come together in aid of Palestinian families displaced by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. \nAbout the Cause \nAl Nasser Charitable (النَّاصر- ‘The Helper’) was founded in 2021 by our friend Ibrahim Raida during the Israeli attacks on Gaza\, with the aim of delivering urgent aid to those affected. This fundraiser directly supports Ibrahim\, his displaced family\, and their vital work through the charity. \nIbrahim and his family were displaced from Gaza City to Rafah\, along with over a million others. DESCRIPTION:Public View & Talks »\nThu 3 Oct\, 19:00 – 21:00\nExhibition open 24/7\nAn international exhibition of experimental photography will be coming to central Bristol at the Outdoor Gallery of the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft on Jamaica St from the 3rd to the 16th of October. \nInternationally acclaimed photographer Millee Tibbs will be exhibiting giant versions of her work. Her images are an investigation of traditional idealised landscape – the kind that is easily consumable and often commodified. The work has been chosen and curated by Justin Quinnell\, from over thirty presentations at the recent Experimental Photography Festival in Barcelona. \nMillee Tibbs is Professor of Photography at Wayne State University\, Detroit. She holds an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is the recipient of two MacDowell Colony fellowships\, as well as multiple national and international artist residency awards. Her work has been published by the Humble Arts Foundation\, NYC and the Aperture Foundation\, and is held in the permanent collections of the George Eastman Museum\, Detroit Institute of Arts and the Chrysler Museum. Further information can be found on Millee’s website at milleetibbs.com. \nAs well as Millee’s work there will be images from the directors of the Real Photography Company who will be installing the work. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition curated by students on the intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol\nOpen 31st May – 1st June\, 11 am to 5 pm\nAdvocate! Arts to shine a light on invisible struggles and stigma in medicine. \nThis collection of artworks has been created and collated by Bristol Medical students who have taken a year away from their medical curriculum to study humanities. Advocate! aims to shine some light onto several aspects of wellbeing and medicine which are currently not well enough understood\, including: experiences of chronic pain and illness; stigma in medical practice; and the experiences of neurodiverse people in healthcare settings. \nThe exhibition aims to show and depict aspects of these subjects without judgement\, even (and especially) when it involves matters that can be difficult to bring up in every-day conversation because of associated stigma and ignorance. \nMedical practitioners have a vital role to play in advocating for and empowering patients\, but may themselves share in the general culture’s ignorance and habits of stigmatisation. \nThe arts can raise awareness\, and so understanding\, of difficult to see conditions such as chronic pain; they can make us rethink the tacit consensuses that underlie stigma; and\, through empathy and metaphor\, they can allow us a sense of how others — such as neurodiverse patients — experience our shared contexts in different ways. \nThe arts can bring the hidden into sight\, and help to break down the barriers to healthcare for vulnerable patients. \nTea and coffee available.
