DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED due to low ticket sales\nA night of cinema\, conversation\, and community reflection on the theme of masculinity\, as part of our monthly School of Activism screening series.\n\nSamaBhav is a travelling film festival that brings together cinema\, conversation\, and community reflection. It grows from the decades-long work of Men Against Violence and Abuse (MAVA)\, Mumbai\, and is hosted in collaboration with the South Asian Heritage Trust as part of South Asian Heritage Month 2025 theme of “Roots to Routes.” Each event in this series offers films\, keynotes\, and collective dialogue across cities and civic spaces in the UK. \nSamaBhav creates a space to reflect on how masculinities are shaped by migration\, caste\, kinship\, memory\, and the challenges of accountability. It invites audiences to engage with the complexities of gender\, queerness\, care\, and justice without expecting simple solutions. \nSamaBhav encourages participants to ask: What do we inherit? What do we resist? What are we becoming together? \nSamaBhav invites you to be part of a shared journey. (if that is a thing you have) \n“Agnes\, the pioneering\, pseudonymized transgender woman who participated in Harold Garfinkel’s gender health research at UCLA in the 1960s\, has long stood as a figurehead of trans history. \nIn this rigorous cinematic exercise that blends fiction and nonfiction\, director Chase Joynt explores where and how her platform has become a pigeonhole. Framing Agnes endeavours to widen the frame through which trans history is viewed — one that has remained too narrow to capture the multiplicity of experiences eclipsed by Agnes’s. \nThrough a collaborative practice of reimagination\, an impressive line-up of trans stars (Zackary Drucker\, Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Max Wolf Valerio\, Silas Howard\, and Stephen Ira) take on vividly rendered\, impeccably vintage re-enactments\, bringing to life groundbreaking artifacts of trans health care. \nJoynt’s signature form-rupturing style radically re-envisions the imposition of the frame on the cultural memory of transness through his brilliantly crafted\, communally driven excavation. You already know how to dance\, we’re just here to give you permission to embrace all of the ways your body wants to move.\nCome alone\, come with friends\, dip in a toe or plunge in the deep end. However you want to party\, we’re here for it. \nSo that everyone feels safe to unleash their full selves on the dancefloor our only rule is to be excellent to one another (aka the “don’t be an asshole” policy). What does that mean? We expect you to be great at respecting other peoples’ boundaries and bodies\, to pay attention\, and to use your words if you’re unsure. Trust us\, asking is way less awkward than getting it wrong. \nLOCAL TEACHERS AND DJS\nWe’ll kick off the evening with an intro to social dancing for anyone who’d like some tips on dancing with a partner\, before local DJ’s get us moving with tracks ranging from slow and squishy to high-energy bangers. \nNo partner or experience necessary\, just bring yourself and shoes you can move in. \nLINE-UP\n7.30pm doors\n7.45pm all-levels workshop\n8.45pm our DJ’s bring the party \nACCESS\nThe venue is all on one level from pavement to dancefloor. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to compliment a stranger? Have you ever taken inspiration from other women? Have you ever been an inspiration to other women? Do you want to break the personal barrier you hold for yourself and inspire others? Bodied Canvas aims to smash those barriers with yourself and to connect with others. \nBodied Canvas will collectively discuss how we play down our achievements\, skills\, expertise\, what we like about ourselves\, our personality or even our bodies to stay humble. Together we will undress our emotional layers to bring some clarity to the language we use to undermine what we have to say and taking space. \nBody painting takes place over the second half of the workshop where we will get to decorate each other as a sign of empowerment\, admiration and camaraderie. \nWe adorn ourselves not because we hide but because we want to be seen\, to own our skin and wear it proudly. \nThe act of women beautifying one another is an ancestral ceremony that takes different shapes in every culture\, from henna tattoos\, cornrows braids and bantu knots\, Huadian make-up in China or piercing traditions. \nBy decorating each other\, we empower other women sharing the gift of our unique creative expression through paint. We influence each other\, support one another and grow stronger together in often invisible ways. Through paint we will leave physical marks of our commitment to have each other’s backs. We are all unique and different and our journeys are too but we have all gone through similar experiences and we use that to empower each other and with it ourselves. \nWHAT TO EXPECT : In this workshop we will practice codes of assertiveness as part of the process of supporting one another. We will do body and creative warm up before decorating each other. The workshop includes snacks and hot beverages followed by integration and a relaxation ceremony. You will not be expected to allow all of your body to be painted or for every participant to do so. This workshop also encourages us to remove guilt practicing assertiveness claiming ownership of our bodies and sharing whatever we want whenever we want to. \nWe use water based body paint\, we will test it on your skin upon arrival. \nParticipants are expected to bring a towel for drying and a dressing gown/kimono/big shirt. \n*Open to all women: cis\, trans and non-binary resonating with the gender identity of woman. If you have any queries regarding our inclusion policy\, please don’t hesitate to ask. \nWhile we do our best to create a safe and inclusive space\, it is each individual’s responsibility to look after their needs and boundaries. DESCRIPTION:A new generation of LGBT+ people are out—to take on the system. \nThe Tories are ramping up their war on trans and non-binary people. Rishi Sunak blocking Scotland’s GRA reforms is a threat to trans rights across Britain—and part of a right wing backlash against LGBT+ people. \nIt’s not just in Britain. Whether it’s in Italy or Hungary\, far right governments are attacking LGBT+ people under the guise of “gender ideology”. \nUganda’s government recently passed a vicious homophobic law\, building on the legacy of the British Empire. \nLGBT+ oppression is ingrained throughout society\, but it hasn’t always existed. It’s rooted in the development of capitalism and the nuclear family\, and bigoted ideas are pushed from the top of society. \nIn Britain\, we’ve also seen resistance. The Tories blocking Scottish GRA reforms was met by a wave of resistance\, with young and militant protests from London to the Scottish islands. And the vigils for Brianna Ghey brought thousands more onto the streets. \nThe movement has thrown up huge questions—whether it’s about the roots of oppression\, identity politics\, or strategies to win liberation. \nJoin us to discuss where LGBT+ oppression comes from and how we can win liberation.
