DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nA trade union is essential for improving your working life – but it can be difficult knowing where to begin. Starting from a few coworkers\, how can you find ways to put pressure on your employers and force them to make the changes you need? \nIn this workshop – delivered by and for current and new trade union organisers – we’ll discuss a range of trade union tactics and the different situations they’re suitable for. \n\nWhat to expect\nAfter a short introductory talk\, we will discuss the topic in small groups\, with some time to feed back to the whole room. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \n\nAbout Bristol Transformed\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. Bringing together activists\, trade unionists\, and everyone who wants to learn\, we’re creating the space to discuss the most important issues facing us\, equipping us with the skills and knowledge to transform Bristol and the world. \nWe run an annual festival of politics\, arts and culture in May\, and weekly events throughout the rest of the year. See all our events here. \nBristol Transformed is run by dozens of local people. Without new people coming in every year\, we wouldn’t be able to maintain the same standard of political education events that you enjoy. If you’d be interested in joining us\, sign up as a BT volunteer today and we’ll be in touch!

SUMMARY:Organising Against Imperialism at Home - with Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nIn the past two years\, across the world we have seen not only a huge outpouring of grief for the genocide in Gaza\, but many acts of organised resistance against it. Marches\, direct actions\, nationwide strikes\, and solidarity flotillas have shown that the vast majority of the planet is against genocide and western imperialism. But while heroic and inspiring\, these efforts have so far failed to compel our governments to act. In fact\, US & Zionist imperialism appears to be more emboldened than ever; after kidnapping the President of Venezuela\, and then making claims over Greenland\, they now have taken the horrific and devastating step of declaring all out war on Iran. \nIn this session\, we are going to explore the different ways of organising against imperialism\, and look at their strengths and weaknesses and examine why and where some have been successful\, while others less so. We are going to look at the structures in place that prevent effective organising and talk about the different tactics that have been used over the years to overcome them. \nIt is becoming more and more clear that appeals to the morality and good will of politicians does not work. Meaningful change can only come from creating mass politics\, engaging everyone in the struggle against imperialism and forcing our governments to act. \nJoin the session and help us organise to do it. \nWhat to expect \nA talk\, followed by a discussion with inputs welcome from all attendees. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \nAbout Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone  \nOver the last two years\, through a community boycott campaign\, BAFZ have been organising our city to stand in opposition to the genocide. They’ve done this through grassroots\, door-to-door organising; with hundreds of active volunteers and 6000 local supporters\, our city is now home to Europe’s largest grassroots boycott campaign.

SUMMARY:Althusser: Is education just capitalist ideology?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nAlthusser was an influential French Marxist thinker whose theories about education are familiar to every undergraduate and A-level sociology student. \nCapitalism secures its own reproduction by means of both violence and ideology. The Repressive State Apparatus (police\, courts\, military) keeps workers in check with physical threats\, while the Ideological State Apparatus (schools\, religion\, media\, family\, sport) helps to disseminate ruling class ideas as common sense. \nAre we just reproducing capitalism in our classrooms? How far can we realistically go in challenging the dominant capitalist ideology? Is Althusser right that education is more dominant even than the media? Shouldn’t PE teachers really be seen as part of the Repressive State Apparatus? \nRecommended reading: “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” by Althusser: PDF version – Text version \n\nWhat to expect\nAfter a short introductory talk\, we will discuss the topic in small groups\, with some time to feed back to the whole room. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \n\nAbout Bristol Transformed\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. SUMMARY:Capitalism\, Imperialism & Zionism - with Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nFree Palestine\, free the world: Why anti-imperialism must be at the heart of our socialist politics\nJoin Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone and Bristol Transformed for an education series exploring anti-imperialist practice in the West; in particular\, how we can effectively take action for Palestine in Britain today. \nOver the last two years\, through a community boycott campaign\, BAFZ have been organising our city to stand in opposition to the genocide. They’ve done this through grassroots\, door-to-door organising. With hundreds of active volunteers and 6000 local supporters\, our city is now home to Europe’s largest grassroots boycott campaign. \nThis series explores some of the theories that underpin BAFZ’s work. We’ll explore the forces that give rise to ‘Israel’s’ apartheid and genocide in order to consider what effective Palestine solidarity work looks like in Western countries like Britain today. \nThis multi-session series grapples with some of the following questions: \nHow do theories of capitalism\, imperialism and Zionism help us to engage in effective practices of solidarity? Why does organising Palestine solidarity on a class basis matter? How does BAFZ’s doorknocking and community boycott strategy fit with these theories? \nThis session will explore the root causes of genocide and apartheid in Palestine. Together we’ll explore the links between capitalism\, Western imperialism\, and Zionism. We’ll think through how these dynamics shape ‘Israel’s’ actions\, and how they help us understand Britain’s role in the genocide. This will help us consider what effective solidarity work looks like in the West\, and why the kind of work that BAFZ does might be a part of this strategy. \nWhat to expect\nA talk\, followed by a discussion with inputs welcome from all attendees. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \nAbout Bristol Transformed\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. SUMMARY:Childcare in Activism - with the Bristol Transformed Childcare Caucus
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nThe Bristol Transformed Childcare Caucus was established last year\, providing free childcare at BT and other socialist meetings. Beyond just providing care\, they also aim to politically engage volunteers\, including education on the political significance of childcare and how it enables wider participation in activism. Across two events this spring\, we will discuss the historical role of childcare in activism! \nAt this first event we will discuss this history\, encouraging participants to share their own experiences and knowledge. We will explore how childcare has evolved within political movements\, including the benefits and challenges brought by safeguarding requirements. \nOur second event in March will build on this by incorporating a brief history of our own Childcare Caucus and its development within Bristol Transformed! \nWhat to expect\nAfter a short introductory talk\, we will discuss the topic in small groups\, with some time to feed back to the whole room. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \nDedicated childcare will not be provided for this event\, but children are very welcome (and we will have toys and snacks). \nAbout Bristol Transformed\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. SUMMARY:School of Activism Presents: Everyone is Responsible

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: School of Activism – Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art Of Activism
DESCRIPTION:This event is now CANCELLED.\nDOORS 6:30pm / FILM from 7pm / Informal discussion from 8:30pm \nWhen does practice become protest? Or protest\, poetry? \nAward-winning documentary filmmaker Fiona Cunningham-Reid presents an intimate portrait of internationally acclaimed artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey\, who work at the intersection of art\, activism\, biology and ecology. \nUncompromisingly preoccupied with the climate and ecological crisis\, Ackroyd & Harvey’s work has become a rallying cry for the environmental movement\, winning them international acclaim and a global following. With some of their pieces standing in prestigious galleries and others embedded in nature\, their work not only references the natural world\, but also regularly employs it. The film offers singular access into the lives\, work and partnership of the artists\, and their quest to shake humanity into action on climate catastrophe – whatever the personal cost – including their collaboration with Extinction Rebellion\, and co-founding the movement Culture Declares Emergency. \nMeticulous and thoughtful\, this careful study of a lifelong creative partnership asks questions of where art and hope – and love – stand in our very uncertain world. \nThis film contains flickering or flashing lights that may affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. \nPresented by PRSC’s School of Activism. \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Political Agency - The Place of the "I" in Politics
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nIndividual political agency today – myth or political reality? A collaborative exploration of the limits of meaningful political agency with Jess Mezo (PhD Researcher\, University of Bath).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we find our place in the political life of our communities? What does it mean to exercise agency in a world where so many feel powerless? Join Jess Mezo\, PhD researcher in Political Theory\, Creative Methods\, and Non-Violent Resistance Movements at the University of Bath\, for a unique\, collaborative workshop designed to help us rethink our roles in shaping political change. \nThis event is not a lecture\, but a space for open dialogue and collective problem-solving. Bring your questions\, your concerns\, and your lived experiences. Together\, we’ll explore the obstacles to meaningful political agency (both locally and nationally) and work towards practical\, creative solutions. Drawing on insights from political theory and previous community workshops\, Jess will guide the discussion\, but the direction and outcomes will be shaped by you\, the participants. \nWhether you’re a student\, an activist\, or a curious member of the public\, this workshop is for anyone interested in understanding and reclaiming their political power. We’ll discuss what empowered agency can look like\, how art and joy can be tools for change\, and how we might cultivate a culture of action in challenging times. \nCome ready to share\, reflect\, and imagine new possibilities for political engagement because the future of our communities is far from determined and its trajectory depends on the voices and actions of us all. \nAll are welcome. No prior experience in political theory required – just an open mind and a willingness to participate. \nNibbles and refreshments provided. A limited number of bus passes (Bristol + Bath to Bristol for Bath residents) available for those on low incomes – please get in touch to request a ticket if applicable. We want to make sure that no one is excluded due to their financial circumstances.

SUMMARY:FOCUS CONGO
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\n\nPresented by BadApple\, Friends of Congo\, School of Activism & SOLiD\nAfter the powerful success of our first event\, Focus on Congo returns for Round 2\, this time at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft. \nOn this night\, we gather once again in solidarity with the Congolese people\, raising funds for Focus Congo\, an organisation working directly with families impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. \nThis fundraiser will bring together activists\, artists\, speakers\, and the Bristol community for an evening of food\, culture\, and action. \nWHAT TO EXPECT \nTalks & Panel Discussions:\nFeaturing Bad Apple\, shedding light on corporate exploitation and the urgent need to boycott Apple for its role in Congo’s cobalt crisis. Friends of Congo and the School of Activism will also lead conversations\, alongside speakers from Congo including author Lildonia Lawrence\, sharing insights from her book Back Yourself: A Self-Care Guide to Healing from Racial Trauma. \nPoetry & Performance:\nWith powerful contributions from Poet Lawrence Hoo and local performers using art to amplify truth. \nCultural Food & Merchandise:\nEnjoy freshly made African cuisine\, and explore new fundraiser merchandise — including badges\, posters\, and stickers\, with all proceeds going to Focus Congo. \nCommunity Energy:\nExpect a night of solidarity\, reflection\, and cultural celebration\, designed not only to raise funds but to deepen awareness of Congo’s struggles and resilience. \nWhy it matters:\nCongo is at the heart of the global tech economy\, providing the majority of the world’s cobalt — a key mineral in phones\, laptops\, and electric cars. Behind these devices lies a story of exploitation\, child labour\, displacement\, and political violence. Yet the people of Congo continue to resist\, organise\, and survive. \nBy coming together\, we show that Bristol is not silent. We stand in solidarity\, we educate ourselves and each other\, and we raise real funds that will have a direct impact on Congolese families through Focus Congo. \nThe struggle in Congo is global\, and so is our solidarity. Join us for a night of community\, creativity\, and commitment. \nGoFundMe link: https://gofund.me/d5d030840 \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

SUMMARY:School of Activism presents: Fires & Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\n\n\nPRSC’s School of Activism presents: Fires & Fascism \nDOORS @ 7pm // Screening from 7:30pm // Q&A with the filmmaker from 8:45pm – all tickets £5 \nFIRES AND FASCISM is a new 57-min documentary shows the wildfires in Europe are more than just climate change and mismanagement. It links the increasing wildfires of Europe with past fascism\, big business\, organised crime\, and the rise of the far right. It showcases how communities are engaging in direct action\, protest\, rewilding\, and suppressing the rise of uncontrollable fires and the far right through direct actions. \nThe experiences and actions of 25 people across Greece\, Italy\, Spain\, and Portugal feature\, ranging between scientists\, teachers\, artists\, gardeners\, engineers\, winemakers\, NGOs\, and authors. \nDr Pete Knapp\, the filmmaker\, has a background in air quality and shifted careers from academia to storytelling. The reason for making the film is to reduce modern day fascism that capitalises on any crisis\, which are wildfires in this case. It aims to start the conversation on what we do about the rise of fascism today. \nSept 29th @ PRSC! \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions \n\n\n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:Democracy in Your Party?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\n“If we seek to build a society that truly believes that every cook can govern\, we have to put those beliefs into practice.” \nAs Your Party’s founding conferene gets delayed until the new year\, the organisation behind-the-scenes looks increasingly worrying. Rumours swirl of secretive disputes\, unofficial factions\, and unelected leaders coup’d out of their own party. \nIn light of this\, it falls to us – supporters on the ground – to put forward a new vision of what this party could be. Joining debates taking place across the country\, this week’s event will discuss democratic structures: what sort of party should we fight for? How could a new party empower ordinary people to become political organisers & leaders? \nBefore this event\, we encourage you to read the article “Democracy Is More Than Voting”. We’ll be using it as the starting point for discussing different models of democracy\, and the best ways to build a socialist organisation. Don’t worry about the specifics\, like mentions of particular committees or “Robert’s Rules”! \nEvent format: After a short introduction\, we’ll spend most of the event discussing the article in groups of 4-5 people\, with some time to discuss it with the whole room afterwards. \n\nBristol Transformed runs an annual festival of politics\, arts and culture in April\, and events every Tuesday evening throughout the rest of the year. See all our events here: https://hdfst.uk/bristol-transformed \nWe are a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nCorbyn & Sultana’s announcement of a new political party has shaken British politics\, but everything about the party is up in the air. How will it be organised? Who will lead it? Will it be a purely parliamentary party\, or can we aim for something more? \nIn this event we’ll discuss one proposal for how to build a radically democratic party\, led by its members – Max Shanly’s article “Towards a New Model Left Party” \nWe encourage everyone to read the article\, or at least the closing section where he lays out his concrete proposals. \nEvent format: After a short introduction\, we will discuss the article in small groups\, with time to feed back to the whole room afterwards. \n————————\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. SUMMARY:The People's Comedy: Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nThe 4th July marks the United States’ Independence Day\, a day that\, in theory\, celebrates anti‑colonialism—when they broke away from the British Empire\, once the biggest empire the world had ever known. The United States went on to produce some of the most incisive comic minds—Mark Twain\, Lenny Bruce and Whoopi Goldberg—who were all known for challenging authority. And yet the emancipated nation has become the most powerful force the world has ever seen. \nThis Independence Day\, let’s cast a humorous light on the ills that entails\, and remember the underdog spirit the day is meant to honour. \nThe People’s Comedy WINNER (Chortle awards): Best pro comedy night ’25 and Best live comedy format ’25 for Wales & the West! \nComedians include (some from the USA and some not!): \nElaine Fellows (runner-up in Hastings Newcomer of the Year 2022 and a finalist in Brighton New Comedian of the Year 2021) ✊\nIzzy Francke (Funny Women Awards 2023) ✊\nMonica Chatterjee (Semi Finalist- Komedia Brighton ‘23\nSemi Finalist- WNAOTY ‘23\nLonglisted- Funny Women ‘23) ✊\nBahkai Wynter (Truly a People’s Comedy legend) ✊\nAbigail Saenz (2023      GigGag Comedy Festival) ✊\nStephen Bisland (as seen on HBO\, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama)✊ \nGracie Mars as MC (Semis: SYTYF23) ✊ \nWHY THE PEOPLE’S COMEDY?\nThe People’s Comedy formed in 2018 with the aim of platforming comedians with a message (think counter-culture\, underrepresented\, original) and ensuring that they’re paid for their craft.
