SUMMARY:CANCELLED: School of Activism – Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art Of Activism
DESCRIPTION:This event is now CANCELLED.\nDOORS 6:30pm / FILM from 7pm / Informal discussion from 8:30pm \nWhen does practice become protest? Or protest\, poetry? \nAward-winning documentary filmmaker Fiona Cunningham-Reid presents an intimate portrait of internationally acclaimed artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey\, who work at the intersection of art\, activism\, biology and ecology. \nUncompromisingly preoccupied with the climate and ecological crisis\, Ackroyd & Harvey’s work has become a rallying cry for the environmental movement\, winning them international acclaim and a global following. With some of their pieces standing in prestigious galleries and others embedded in nature\, their work not only references the natural world\, but also regularly employs it. The film offers singular access into the lives\, work and partnership of the artists\, and their quest to shake humanity into action on climate catastrophe – whatever the personal cost – including their collaboration with Extinction Rebellion\, and co-founding the movement Culture Declares Emergency. \nMeticulous and thoughtful\, this careful study of a lifelong creative partnership asks questions of where art and hope – and love – stand in our very uncertain world. \nThis film contains flickering or flashing lights that may affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. \nPresented by PRSC’s School of Activism. \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:School of Activism: A movement of movements for Bristol?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nBristol is a city full of energy and vibrant alternative initiatives\, but they don’t always connect well together. The idea of a ‘movement of movements’ suggests that organizing might to scale out and scale up if it is to be able to address the polycrisis that faces us\, but for many organizers it is scale that is the problem. Ideas such as prefiguration\, horizontalism\, localism and so on tend to focus on the small and specific and to be suspicious of political parties\, the state and established institutions. In this event we want to think about longer term strategic aims and wider social transformation. SUMMARY:Rave On For The Avon: Film + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA feature-length documentary that follows Bristol’s community fighting to save their river in unique and daring ways.\nDo humans have the right to nature? In “Rave On For The Avon”\, Director Charlotte Sawyer tells a story of a community of wild swimmers in Bristol (UK) affected by raw sewage pollution of the river Avon. England is one of the only two countries in the world to have a fully privatised water and sewage disposal system\, and with only 14% of English rivers in good ecological health\, the mission to keep the rivers clean is not going well. \nIn a series of moving\, exciting and thought-provoking scenes\, the swimmers create a stunning\, light-hearted yet fascinating tapestry\, probing how activism starts from the grassroots\, and carries a profound universal lesson for all of us. There’s a marriage to the river\, drum’n’bass\, a mermaid who tows an inflatable turd\, and a whole lot of cheesecake in this poignant reflection on people’s innovative battles for the natural world they cherish. \nFollowed by a Q&A with the Rave On community\, learn about the journey of the film\, and hear first-hand from those involved in the movement. The event will include poetry from the Avon Bride\, Mrs Meg Avon. \nModerator: Charlotte Kyle – a final year Spanish and politics student and the Trip Secretary of the University of Bristol Wild Swimming Society (@bristoluniwildswim). Charlotte is a journalist and an experienced communicator of environmental issues and will moderate this Q+A panel. \nQ&A guest: Elena Sedman – a final year German and music student and President of the University of Bristol Wild Swimming Society (@bristoluniwildswim). Elena will be one of our panelists\, as a fount of all Bristol swimming knowledge and an advocate for the physical\, social\, and mental benefits of wild swimming. \nRated ★★★★ by The Guardian – “Campaigning never looked so fun and friendly as it does in this joyous documentary about Bristol’s clean water campaigners” \nAbout the film:\nhttps://www.eightysita.com/raveonfortheavondocumentary\nhttps://www.instagram.com/raveonfortheavon/\nhttps://linktr.ee/raveonfortheavon \nDoors Open: 7 PM\nFilm Screening Starts: 7:30 PM\nQ&A: 9 PM – 9:30 PM \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:Radical Love: Clowning In Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Explore the role of art\, humour and radical love as a form of resistance\nAN INVITATION\nJoin Police Officer Az-Oolay for a one day workshop exploring the power of clowning to meet oppression with love. Sharing stories and techniques from her extensive experience – over 300 shifts in the streets\, at protests and demonstrations across Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond – Officer Az-Oolay aims to to transcend violence and oppression and to connect all beating hearts through love. \nWHAT IS IT?\nThis work embodies the mind and the qualities of the clown; bringing joy\, humour and softness to spaces and times of divisive narratives. \n“Narrative creates belief creates action” James Peck \nAt its core\, the essence of clowning is transformation; turning pain into creativity; reshaping our collective spaces through the belief in the inherent goodness of humanity; and meeting difficult situations with love. Officer Az-Oolay’s workshop will involve a presentation of her work and stories from her experiences followed by an embodied session focusing on “Straight to the Heart” Police Clown training including clown and physical theatre techniques. \nThe role of the Straight to the Heart clown police\, is to diffuse tensions between uniformed authorities and civilians. It is also a reminder of our shared humanity\, challenging established power dynamics. \nThis embodied workshop will invite participants to question: \n\nHow do I exercise faith?\nHow do I serve the space?\nHow does my heart become generous and funny?\nHow do I tell a story of love from my heart in times of bloodshed?\nHow can I ‘gap the mind’ and spend some time in the gap without running back to my habits?\nHow can I practice joy?\nHow can I share it?\n\nWHO IS IT FOR?\nClowns\, activists\, theatre practitioners\, circus and physical performers\, socially engaged practitioners and artists of all kinds\, enthusiasts and the curious!\nAnyone interested in exploring new forms of activism or expanding their understanding of clowning as a form of political expression.\nAnd anyone who wants to use humour and laughter to change the world. \nAPPLICATION & INVESTMENT\nTo apply please fill in this form by Friday 19 May 2024: https://forms.gle/V2tF82onAuZ3qZyX8 \nOnce invited; the course investment is: £40 – £75 sliding scale depending on your means\nA couple of bursary places are also available. Please get in touch if you would like to apply for one: email hidden; JavaScript is required \nABOUT OFFICER AZ-OOLAY\nOfficer Az-Oolay (“then may be” – in Hebrew”) is the lone officer of the Yashar-el Ha-Lev (Straight to the Heart\, in Hebrew) police force. The clown officer was a creative response that emerged from the weekly demonstrations in Balfour Street in Jerusalem in 2020\, against the corruption of Netanyahu’s government. As protesters were met by increased violence from police\, Officer Az-Oolay entered\, dressed in a wrinkled blue uniform\, a flower garlanded police hat\, a red clown’s nose. Officer Az-Oolay creates an inverted mirror to bodies of the police\, the army\, and bands of citizens who oppose equal rights; trying to break down the repressive power that they represent. Working throughout Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond\, Officer Az-Oolay ushers in a new political imagination\, providing moments of mercy and healing in these complex political times.\n@Shoteretazoolay

SUMMARY:African Apocalypse: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Want to hear from people on the ground about the current situation in Niger? \nJoin us for a screening of the film ‘African Apocalypse’ which follows the university student Femi Nylander on a journey through Niger\, meeting communities who are still living with the legacies of colonialism\, as well as the young people determined to work towards repair. \nWe will follow the film with a call to action about reparations\, which will be the starting point of building solidarity with the indigenous communities in Niger and the generation of young people who are taking back their future. \nBehind the recent media headlines about Niger is an environmental justice struggle. Uranium from the former French colony is still powering one out of every three lightbulbs in France\, while in Niger itself less than 20% of people have access to electricity; the stopping of French plunder of natural resources needs to be enacted globally. \nDonations accepted to cover costs. \n\nThe Struggle Continues // Fri 18 - Mon 28 August // Open 12:00 - 18:00 daily\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963's Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. SUMMARY:The Struggle Continues
DESCRIPTION:Opening party: Thu 17 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nOpen daily: Fri 18 – Mon 28 Aug\, 12:00 – 18:00\nClosing party: Mon 28 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963’s Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. Artwork and stories from local artists\, community members\, charities\, and campaign groups examine where we have come from and where we are heading. \nThe Bristol Bus Boycott was a critical moment in the history of race relations and civil rights in the UK. However\, celebrations of this historic victory should not encourage a sense of complacency. The struggles for justice and equality\, and the battles of communities against oppressive authorities are ongoing\, and only by continuing the work of those that went before can we protect these rights of generations to come. \nThis exhibition is a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of giants\, that struggles can take decades\, and the fight for civil rights and equality is not over. \nDo you have a personal archive\, artworks or stories relating to the Bristol Bus Boycott\, the 1980s St Pauls uprisings\, Countering Colston\, Occupy\, BLM\, housing struggles in Bristol\, or the Kill The Bill protests and court cases?\nWould you be interested in lending them to this community exhibition? We’re not just looking for documentation of the headline grabbing events\, but the longer campaigns and work that went on before and after the cameras and journalists came. \nGet in contact via email hidden; JavaScript is required with an outline of what you’d like to contribute\, or bring them along to the show to add in real time! \nThe Struggle Continues is a collaboration between the PRSC\, @curiosity_unltd\, @oshiiblklgt\, and many other local artists and activists. Many thanks to Unite the Union for their support. \n\nThe Struggle Continues // Fri 18 - Mon 28 August // Open 12:00 - 18:00 daily\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963's Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. SUMMARY:From Toppling Colston to the Hostile Environment: Opposing the racist offensive.
DESCRIPTION:The toppling of the Colston statue in Bristol was a seminal moment for Black Lives Matter\, (BLM) and exposed the widespread institutional racism across society. \nThe government responded by opposing all the demands of BLM and scapegoating refugees through the Nationality and Borders Bill. In addition\, there has been a crack- down on the right to protest through the Police Bill\, which has targeted BLM and environmental protesters among others. \nThe government has failed to respond to the refugee crisis from Ukraine\, just like they failed with Afghanistan a few months earlier. All refugees should be welcome here. \nThis meeting will discuss how we build resistance to the poison of racism and the divide and rule policies of the government and the far right that try to capitalise on them.

SUMMARY:Adblocking Bristol Airport's Greenwash
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn 2020\, Amsterdam became the first city in the world to ban advertising for flights\, cars and fossil fuels on its transport network ad spaces.  Can we make Bristol do the same? \nBristol City Council has targets to become carbon neutral by 2030. At the same time\, it is providing advertising space for high carbon companies such as airports and airlines\, who directly encourage us to increase our emissions. Companies such as EasyJet are also using these spaces to greenwash their image making speculative promises about ‘Zero Emission’ travel far into the future to justify selling more tickets today. \nIn February 2022\, Bristol Airport was granted permission to expand to 12 million passengers per year after appealing against North Somerset Council’s rejection of their planning application. The expansion plans would result in 12 million passengers per year\, 10\,000 car movements per day and one million tonnes of CO2 being emitted annually. \nJoin Adblock Bristol\, Bristol Rising Tide and friends as we combine the creative arts practice of ‘subvertising’\, ‘culture jamming’ and ad-hacking with grassroots campaigning to remove big polluter advertising from our city. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. Running at PRSC during April 2022\, the events are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment\, so we offer pay-what-you-can solidarity pricing with no-one turned away through lack of funds. Please donate to help us keep the School of Activism affordable to all!
