SUMMARY:Building a new model of education for Bristol: learning from the heart\, head\, hand\, and whole self - School of Activism
DESCRIPTION:A four-part course which invites participants to come together to reimagine and recreate the future of education. \nThe course will create a community\, a body\, of learning.\nEach evening will explore one aspect oapf this body of learning – heart\, head\, and hand – with the final session bringing all the elements together in the whole body. These evenings are designed to inform and support one another but it is not necessary to attend them all and each evening can be treated as a unique workshop. \n\n\n\n\nBristol Learning Co-op \nA year ago\, a small group of people came together with a shared goal of creating a co-operative university capable of contributing to social transformation in Bristol and beyond. Bristol Learning Co-op was born. \nThe BLC is being established as a response to the continued commodification of education\, a process that is increasing debt\, poverty\, inequality\, illness\, alienation\, and exploitation. Saying ‘no’ to such a world is not enough. We have a responsibility to envision and create the democratic and sustainable alternatives. BLC represents an attempt to hack education and to contribute to social transformation – to co-produce socially useful knowledge that addresses the material problems and injustices we face – in Bristol and far beyond. \nSince last summer\, we have been journeying together through the uLab process. Out of this process\, we have produced our draft Vision\, Values\, and Strategy document. We have also developed a prototype for a model of producing knowledge that recognises the whole body’s need and capacity for learning and knowing. The development of this model will form the core part of the process of establishing and running BLC. \nCourse details \nWith this goal in mind\, we invite you to join us in a four part course\, which will result in forming a Body. Our Body will be made up of Head\, Hand\, and Heart. The goal is to reach a depth of communication that will allow the system we collectively make up to begin to see itself and identify what needs to emerge to take our work forward. \nPart 1 The course will begin in The Heart with work developing techniques for deep listening and connection aimed at opening our heart/s. \nPart 2 We will continue on to The Head\, inviting participants to visualise the future of the BLC and their individual place within it. \nPart 3 In the third session we will work in The Hand on collaborative activities of making directed at manifesting what has emerged from our work in The Head. \nPart 4 Finally\, we will return as a whole Body to reflect on the day and also to identify the energy present in our collective body and how to take this energy forward. \n \nOther information \nIf you have any ideas for workshop themes you would like to explore or lead on (or any other questions)\, please let us know at email hidden; JavaScript is required \nWe will use the course to showcase our work over the previous year\, to share our vision for BLC\, and to invite you to join our process going forward. \nChildren are welcome and can participate. We can share the care of the little ones. \nThank you \nThe BLC team \n \n\n\n\n\nThe School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nhttps://prsc.org.uk/school-of-activism/

SUMMARY:Ecobricks Workshop for All Ages
DESCRIPTION:Ecobricks are means for individuals to take personal responsibility for their plastic by containing it and turning it into free building materials that can be given back to the local community. \nNot only do ecobricks stop plastics finding their way into landfill or the ocean\, but also reduce the energy it would take to transport or ship them elsewhere. \nIn this Saturday afternoon workshop we will learn how to make eco-bricks and how to build with them. \nSuitable for all ages (no unaccompanied children).Free entry / donation \nBricking-It is a homegrown project which seeks to raise awareness about the amount of plastic that is thrown away by households by encouraging people to make ecobricks with all the plastic they don’t recycle. Bricking-it Bristol urges residents to save the plastic they would otherwise put into a black bin\, stuff it into plastic bottles\, and get it to us via one of our collection points across the city. Making eco-bricks leads to a drastic reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill\, if whole communities and cities were to participate in the containment of plastics\, the impact could be incredible.

SUMMARY:Mask Making with Art4Change
DESCRIPTION:Drop in workshop and exhibition\,\nfree entry\,\nsuitable for all ages – just pop in!\n3-6pm \nThe aim of this workshop is to create masks which portray hidden emotions and thoughts\, to give a sense of how people really feel. The masks created in previous workshops will also be exhibited during this session. \nWe all wear ‘masks’ every day – without them our lives would not be possible. However these everyday masks are different from the masks that conceal what shouldn’t be hidden – the painful thoughts and feelings that are associated with Mental Ill Health. \nThis workshop focusses on our relationship with mental illness with a final goal of reducing negative attitudes and raising awareness of the importance of our mental health and how this is viewed in society. \nIt addresses the issue of mental health from 4 perspectives: \n1 – Those experiencing mental illness – young & old \n2 – Those living with people experiencing it \n3 – Those working with people experiencing it \n4 – The wider society \nArt4change is a project aiming to give disadvantaged sections of the community the opportunity to gain self-confidence\, transferable skills and to feel valued\, by creating and exhibiting art work that draws attention to a wide range of social issues. \nThis is a School of Activism workshop\, rescheduled from April due to a bike injury. \n \nThe School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nhttps://prsc.org.uk/school-of-activism/

SUMMARY:Solidarity Action with Extinction Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:In the week of April 15 to 22\, Extinction Rebellion will be holding large climate change protests in London. They are calling on all environmentally conscious citizens from around the UK to join them in bringing the London traffic to a halt. \nUnfortunately\, what with jobs\, family commitments and other life obligations\, not all of us can move to London for a week in the name of the planet. \nBut fear not! That doesn’t mean that we can’t support the cause. \nOn Easter Sunday PRSC invites you to head out into the streets with us in a solidarity protest. \nDepending on funds\, timings & levels of interest this will either involve a coachtrip to London or a sister protest in Bristol. \nWatch This Space

A critical mass of people from all walks of life – farmers\, landowners\, mums\, dads\, activists\, scientists – organised themselves to rally against the unconventional gas invasion. Despite the enormous public opposition\, the gas industry and the State Government were determined to see their gas plan through. A series of dramatic blockades ensued\, before the final battle lines were drawn in the peaceful farming valley of Bentley. Thousands of people flocked to the site to stare down the threat of 850 riot police\, ordered in to break up the protest. What happened next set an historic precedent. \nFilmed over five years\, The Bentley Effect documents the highs and lows of the battle to keep a unique part of Australia gasfield-free. This timely story of a community’s heroic stand shows how strategic direct action and peaceful protest can not only overcome industrial might and political short-sightedness … but it can also be a lot of fun. \nIt celebrates the non-violent ‘Eureka Stockade’ of our time and chronicles one of the fastest growing social movements we have ever witnessed. \nGasland showed us the problem – The Bentley Effect points us to the solution and poses the question “what is truly valuable?’. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 9pm The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (2006) \nThe documentary\, “The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil\,” was inspired when Faith Morgan and Pat Murphy took a trip to Cuba through Global Exchange in August\, 2003. That year Pat had begun studying and speaking about worldwide peak oil production. In May Pat and Faith attended the second meeting of The Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas\, a European group of oil geologists and scientists\, which predicted that mankind was perilously close to having used up half of the world’s oil resources. \nWhen they learned that Cuba underwent the loss of over half of its oil imports and survived\, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990\, the couple wanted to see for themselves how Cuba had done this. During their first trip to Cuba\, in the summer of 2003\, they traveled from Havana to Trinidad and through several other towns on their way back to Havana. They found what Cubans call “The Special Period” astounding and Cuban’s responses very moving. Faith found herself wanting to document on film Cuba’s successes so that what they had done wouldn’t be lost. Both of them wanted to learn more about Cuba’s transition from large farms or plantations and reliance on fossil-fuel-based pesticides and fertilizers\, to small organic farms and urban gardens. Cuba was undergoing a transition from a highly industrial society to a sustainable one. Cuba became\, for them\, a living example of how a country can successfully traverse what we all will have to deal with sooner or later\, the reduction and loss of finite fossil fuel resources. \nThe Power of Community was shot during a return trip to Cuba in October 2004. \nThe goals of this film are to give hope to the developed world as it wakes up to the consequences of being hooked on oil. It’s a story of dedication to independence and triumph over adversity\, and a story of cooperation and hope. Several Cubans expressed the belief that living on an island\, with its natural boundaries\, breeds awareness that there are limits to natural resources. Everyone who has worked on the documentary hopes that\, seeing this film\, people will also see the world on which we live\, as another\, much larger\, island. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). SUMMARY:Reading the Streets / Writing the Streets - School of Activism
DESCRIPTION:As we all walk\, cycle and drive around our city we’re often so adsorbed in what’s on the radio\, what we need to to during the coming day\, or just feeling the consequences of the night before\, the messages and images that fill our city can pass by without making much of an impact on our consciousness. When we choose to actively engage with our environment we can find a wealth of information there\, from the official signage for vehicles and road users\, all the way down to tag walls\, or stickers full of tiny messages clustering on a lamppost. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Reading the StreetTues April 16thCome to the PRSC to join an exploration of the chaotic and mixed up symbology to be found on the streets of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:Eco-Bricks Workshop for Teens - School of Activism
\nIn this workshop we will learn how to make eco-bricks and how to build with them. \nSuitable for ages 12-19.Free entry / donation \nBricking-It is a homegrown project which seeks to raise awareness about the amount of plastic that is thrown away by households by encouraging people to make ecobricks with all the plastic they don’t recycle. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). SUMMARY:Flash Mobs and Projection Bombing - School of Activism
DESCRIPTION:Free workshop for ages 12-18 \nLearn about flash mobs and message bombs\, and get inspired to DIY in your own campaigns. \nA flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place\, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time\, then quickly disperse\, often for the purposes of protest\, entertainment\, satire\, and artistic expression. \nProjection Bombing (outdoor digital projection in urban environments) is a great method for getting your content up big before the eyes and in the minds of your fellow city inhabitants and then disappearing back into the city. \nThe School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nhttps://prsc.org.uk/school-of-activism/

His book about the people of Stokes Croft has proved immensly popular since it’s release last october. \nLast year Colin collaborated with PRSC to run a city wide photo competition called the ‘Proper Bristol Postcard Comp‘ to start generating a new set of images for the city and to get away from the suspension bridge and hot air balloons vision of Bristol and tpo create something more relevant to the lives of those who live & work here. Colin and PRSC have also run a number of photography workshops in the last 12 months. \nColin is currently working on a project documenting Hannam Youth Club for the Creative Youth Network (among other things). \nBelow is Colin’s 4 part photo story looking at Street Art in Stokes Croft. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The haunting\, empty scenes from fine art photographer Lisa Furness have featured in exhibitions in London\, Berlin\, Liverpool and Barcelona\, but her true love is Bristol\, where\, in 2007 she set up Second Look – a volunteer run project dedicated to promoting creative photography in the city. \nFrom June 2012 to Jan 2015 Lisa took a photographic tour of squats and protest sites around Europe\, and she returned freshly inspired by the possibilities of what can be achieved by a small group of dedicated people who share a vision. \nSince 2015 Lisa’s focus has been on youth education and the provision of cultural spaces at affordable rates. \nBelow is a photo story by Lisa about the housing battle in West Hendon. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_a\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_b\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_c\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_d\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_e\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_f\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_g\n \n \n \n \n lisa_furness_h\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). SUMMARY:Land Rights and the Fight for Cultural Spaces - School of Activism
DESCRIPTION:Land Rights & the Fight for Cultural Spaces – Tales From The Front Line \nAll communities need space. Space to meet\, to learn\, to play\, to create and to share ideas. But today cultural venues all over Bristol are at risk of closure\, or already closing. \nFrom 4pm to 9pm on Saturday April 7th we will explore the issues that led to these problems and also look at some of the innovative ways people are finding to protect cultural spaces in these difficult times. \nFree Entry \n(The times listed below are subject to change as guests and activities are confirmed.) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4pm – Tales from Europe’s autonomous venues \nFrom June 2012 to Jan 2015 photographer Lisa Furness took a photographic tour of squats and protest sites around Europe. In this 20 minute presentation\, she takes you on a whirlind exploration of some of the most impressive creative and community projects she saw on her travels. \nA little taster of what can be done when a group of people get organised and get their hands on an unused building. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4.30pm – Respace Projects Presentation \nThe ground-breaking group ReSpace Projects are heading down from London to share their experiences and successes in opening free community spaces in London and Peterborough. In the midst of a housing crisis and facing the loss hundreds of London’s cultural venues\, ReSpace projects achieved the impossible – they convinced a building developer to allow them free use of an old office block in Dalston while the building was awaiting planning permission – and at a stroke\, the Hive was born. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Hive became a popular centre for all forms of underground and emerging artists and cultural projects. It was the meeting space for charities\, activists and community groups from all over the capital\, and it formed a central hub for all those interested in social action and cultural expression. \nSince then ReSpace projects have gone on to become a trusted name\, offering a bridge between activists and developers\, landlords and communities. They have supported projects in Highgate\, Romford and Southend on Sea\, and they recently opened a huge building in Peterborough\, discussing with the council a potential to open many more empty buildings if this project is a success. \nPRSC is delighted to be hosting their first trip to Bristol where they will share the innovative model that has allowed them to tap in to societies wasted resources and achieve so much positive change. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 5.30pm – Old Library Muller Road – a CAT Story \nAfter hearing of the closure of their local libary\, a team of neighbourhood volunteers went about trying to save it. \nThey went through the Community Asset Transfer process with Bristol City Council and they now have the building safely in community hands – guaranteed for the next few years. \nAs the Old Library on Muller Rd proves to be a real community asset\, bringing people together and providing a beautiful garden in a congested part of the city\, Debbora Hall talks us through how they did it. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n6pm – Antlers & Bricks – why a roving art gallery is settling down \nFounder and director of Antlers Gallery Jack Gibbon will share his experiences of running a nomadic gallery\, look at the pressures facing Bristol’s cultural spaces\, and will discuss the factors that led to his decision to start Bricks – an art space very much rooted in one place. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 6.30pm – Stokes Croft Land Trust \nPRSC introduces the Stokes Croft Land Trust. An ambitious attempt to move all the major cultural and community assets in stokes croft into the hands of the local community. Just in the early stages of development now\, PRSC will share the progress of the Trust so far and our vision for the Trust in the future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 7pm – Round Table Discussion “The future of our community spaces and what we can do to protect them?” \n With Libraries\, community centres\, pubs\, music venues\, art galleries and artist studios all closing or feeling the pinch\, we ask what the future has in store for community spaces.
