SUMMARY:The Children of Mike
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nAn original play by Worms Theatre Company\, with an opening act by Pete the Temp. A story of the estranged human severed from ancient kinship. A collection of mischievous tales in which the more-than-human-world offers counsel to the lost human.\nThe story asks: Whose world is this? Do you own the pavement beneath your feet? Do you see the invisible faces on the street? We live in boxes and walk in lines. When was the last time you wept to the mountain or cursed the bog? \nThe human used to move with grace and humility. The human used to seek council and responsibility. What must we do to save our lonely souls\, to save our lonely soils\, to save our lonely rock? \nWorms Theatre Company seeks to affect social change through collective creativity. We are not-for-profit\, which means every penny wriggles straight back into our community initiatives — we have raised money for charitable causes (like £1500 for Planetary Repairs) and ran a two year program at Adventure Playground\, Felix Road offering weekly theatre and creative opportunities for young people. \nPete the Temp – poet\, comic and author\, whose work combines spoken word\, human-beatbox and experimental sound poetry. \nThere shall be badgers\, pigeons\, microbes\, religion. There shall be dancing and deities. \nOur previous productions:\nThe Banality of Evil ★★★★★ “Brilliantly written and performed” \nThe Last Vagabonds ★★★★★ “A generational satire like no other” \nEntry requirements: 16+

SUMMARY:EVENT - Things We Do Not Know - 7 June 2017
DESCRIPTION:BEAR PIT OPEN AIR THEATRE – Back for one day only!\n“A slut is a slut\, all this bullshit about choice.”\nThings We Do Not Know is an exploration of female street sex workers in Bristol. \nCome and celebrate the first performance in the Bearpit Open Air Theatre! \nUsing verbatim theatre and music\, this hour-long production asks how these women end up having to sell themselves for sex. It explores how society views them\, and how they can get help. The piece began development last year in collaboration with Bristol-based charity One25 and with help from Spotlights we have been able to revive the show. This revival has been edited and updated. The charity works to help get the women clean\, safe and off the streets. \nThere will be a donations bucket at the end of the performances to raise money for One25. (http://one25.org.uk/).\nVenue: Bearpit Open Air Theatre\, St. James Barton Roundabout\, Bristol BS1 3LY \nDates: 7th June at 3:00pm and 6:30pm. \n“This piece was a creative\, brave and fantastically directed testament to the Bristol based charity One25 which helps street sex workers break free from their traumatic and dangerous lives.” Intermission\nhttp://www.intermissionbristol.co.uk/…/things-we-do-not-know\n“It never sought to shock or relish in a perpetuated sense of tragedy\, nor did it sensationalize the idea of “sex” in sex-work… it just wanted to be honest.” ***** Epigram\nhttp://epigram.org.uk/arts/2016/03/review-things-not-know

SUMMARY:Radical Love: Clowning In Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Explore the role of art\, humour and radical love as a form of resistance\nAN INVITATION\nJoin Police Officer Az-Oolay for a one day workshop exploring the power of clowning to meet oppression with love. Sharing stories and techniques from her extensive experience – over 300 shifts in the streets\, at protests and demonstrations across Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond – Officer Az-Oolay aims to to transcend violence and oppression and to connect all beating hearts through love. \nWHAT IS IT?\nThis work embodies the mind and the qualities of the clown; bringing joy\, humour and softness to spaces and times of divisive narratives. \n“Narrative creates belief creates action” James Peck \nAt its core\, the essence of clowning is transformation; turning pain into creativity; reshaping our collective spaces through the belief in the inherent goodness of humanity; and meeting difficult situations with love. Officer Az-Oolay’s workshop will involve a presentation of her work and stories from her experiences followed by an embodied session focusing on “Straight to the Heart” Police Clown training including clown and physical theatre techniques. \nThe role of the Straight to the Heart clown police\, is to diffuse tensions between uniformed authorities and civilians. It is also a reminder of our shared humanity\, challenging established power dynamics. \nThis embodied workshop will invite participants to question: \n\nHow do I exercise faith?\nHow do I serve the space?\nHow does my heart become generous and funny?\nHow do I tell a story of love from my heart in times of bloodshed?\nHow can I ‘gap the mind’ and spend some time in the gap without running back to my habits?\nHow can I practice joy?\nHow can I share it?\n\nWHO IS IT FOR?\nClowns\, activists\, theatre practitioners\, circus and physical performers\, socially engaged practitioners and artists of all kinds\, enthusiasts and the curious!\nAnyone interested in exploring new forms of activism or expanding their understanding of clowning as a form of political expression.\nAnd anyone who wants to use humour and laughter to change the world. \nAPPLICATION & INVESTMENT\nTo apply please fill in this form by Friday 19 May 2024: https://forms.gle/V2tF82onAuZ3qZyX8 \nOnce invited; the course investment is: £40 – £75 sliding scale depending on your means\nA couple of bursary places are also available. Please get in touch if you would like to apply for one: email hidden; JavaScript is required \nABOUT OFFICER AZ-OOLAY\nOfficer Az-Oolay (“then may be” – in Hebrew”) is the lone officer of the Yashar-el Ha-Lev (Straight to the Heart\, in Hebrew) police force. The clown officer was a creative response that emerged from the weekly demonstrations in Balfour Street in Jerusalem in 2020\, against the corruption of Netanyahu’s government. As protesters were met by increased violence from police\, Officer Az-Oolay entered\, dressed in a wrinkled blue uniform\, a flower garlanded police hat\, a red clown’s nose. Officer Az-Oolay creates an inverted mirror to bodies of the police\, the army\, and bands of citizens who oppose equal rights; trying to break down the repressive power that they represent. Working throughout Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond\, Officer Az-Oolay ushers in a new political imagination\, providing moments of mercy and healing in these complex political times.\n@Shoteretazoolay

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Wulf & Eadwacer Theatre
DESCRIPTION:++++ Due to unforseen circumstances we have had to cancel this event. +++++++++++ We hope to bring you some Wulf & Eadwacer theatre soon. +++++++\nWulf & Eadwacer are bringing their latest theatrical offering to the People’s Art Fair. \nWulf & Eadwacer aim to give you the only free medicine… Laughter.\nTheir theatre explores the complexities surrounding human existence\, the essence of which\, the company highlights through true absurdity. They place their work at the heart of the human condition taking reference from antiquity to contemporary\, all throughout time to provide rationale against the thoughts that have plagued the mind of humanity. \nThrough a collaborative effort of a team of alternatively minded thinkers they seek meaning in the absence of truth. In a world where there is a million reasons to cry\, Wulf & Eadwacer will give you at least one more. \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Spring // Friday 31 March - Sunday 9 April 2023\nThe People's Art Fair (PAF) is a ten day long cultural festival providing a platform for visual artists\, poets\, musicians and workshop leaders to show off their talents. PAF is kept free for artists to take part in\, and all ticketed events apply the principle 'no one turned away through lack of funds'.  PAF is a natural extension of our work to break down barriers and increase inclusion and voice\, and is a direct challenge to the exclusionary idea that 'real art’ is exclusive and only created by\, and relevant to a small cultured\, wealthy elite. PAF promotes creative cultural practice as an essential tool for people to challenge or highlight social injustice and to galvanise change.\n\nThroughout the fair we collaborate with local social-minded creatives to offer workshops; a poetry open mic; and a music jam session\, inviting everyone to share and celebrate their talents during the fair. The net result is a visually diverse and culturally rich event featuring hundreds of artworks from over 70 artists; and the emergence of a confident\, mutually supportive creative community that is joyful to be part of.\n\n Browse the People's Art Fair: Spring Exhibition online\n \nPeople’s Art Fair: Opening NightJoin us for the opening night of the People's Art Fair - be among the first to see all the amazing artwork on offer\, access your inner artist with some fun & easy creative activities\, and have a drink while you browse\, schmooze & enjoy live music from Brainbeau.
