SUMMARY:Education and Socialism 1: Bullshit Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:TicketsWhy do educators spend so much time ticking boxes and what should we do about it? \nIn this first session of Education and Socialism\, we look at David Graeber’s concept of ‘Bullshit Jobs’ and ask how far we can apply it to education. \nWe would probably not write off the education sector as one which produces no value for society\, however speak to any education professional at random and they are likely to mention a rise in pointless admin tasks over the years. If education is so socially valuable\, why does so much of the work within it feel like such a waste of time? How can we best highlight tasks that aren’t worth doing? How can we effectively resist bullshit in our workplaces? \nSuggested reading:\nBullshit Pedagogy – Stuart Bracewell – pages 6-7 here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x33gWKSltMyWNASTJXUdAyrKOL-vI8Ua/view?usp=drive_link\nDavid Graeber – ‘On the phenomena of bullshit jobs’ – a short article which inspired the book https://libcom.org/article/phenomenon-bullshit-jobs-david-graeber\nBullshit Jobs – available on Spotify as an audiobook. \nThese are just suggestions in order of relevance and accessibility. Don’t worry if you don’t read all the reading. Turning up and taking part is more important. \nThe session will be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format\, which means that it’ll be interactive and participatory\, with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n————————\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. Bringing together activists\, trade unionists\, and everyone who wants to learn\, we’re creating the space to discuss the most important issues facing us\, equipping us with the skills and knowledge to transform Bristol and the world. \nWe run an annual festival of politics\, arts and culture in May\, and weekly events throughout the rest of the year. SUMMARY:Talking to Your Neighbours About Palestine

SUMMARY:The Improv Spotlight
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA night showcasing the very best of local talent in the Bristol improv community.\nJoin us for a night of spontaneous laughter at The Improv Spotlight. Immerse yourself in the world of unscripted comedy as two talented groups from our vibrant community take centre stage. These groups will weave unique stories\, characters\, and humour on the spot for your entertainment. The Spotlight highlights the spontaneous comedy of improvised theatre and proudly showcases the diverse skills of local troupes and artists within our community. \nDoors at 7pm. Show starts at 7.30pm. \nThis month under the Spotlight… \n*The Red Room*\nImmerse yourself in a David Lynch inspired show\, depicting a quant middle-American town where the spectre of death has passed through and torn apart the lives of each and every member of this community. \nHearts break\, hopes are born and passions ignite for these souls touched by loss – \nFor your viewing pleasure: an absurd and entirely improvised experience that will expose you to both the comedic highs and the tragic lows of these all too human characters. \nContent Warning: May contain descriptions of death and other adult themes. \n*Table Read*\nNot every classic movie started out as a classic… As part of a touring series of screenings\, the British Institute of Film is screening exclusive behind the scenes footage of the first ever script read through of the most famous movies in the history of cinema\, as chosen by the audience! Actors may be fired\, directors may be questioned\, and there’s probably a good reason this footage never saw the light of day until now. Come and witness the entirely improvised Table Read for all the inside scoops on your favourite movies… \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions (under 18s must be accompanied).
