SUMMARY:Community Dinner & Open Meeting for Planet Repairs
DESCRIPTION:Register for your free ticket\nWe have a window of opportunity that only comes every other generation – will we take it or waste it? Across the PRALER network we will take it! Join us and walk as one with communities building a new world of Global Justice. \nWe are launching a series of community dinners and open meetings with the aim to provide an action-learning space for people in Bristol who want to engage in practical ways with communities around the world who are taking back control of their lands and their education. \nThere are many traditions of peoples to peoples solidarity which we have a duty to build on\, such as the hundreds of thousands of people across the UK who 200 years ago boycotted sugar produced through slavery\, or the example of Sylvia Pankhurst who dedicated much of her life in solidarity with the struggle for Afrikan liberation as well as for women’s right to vote. \nWe need to rebuild internationalist networks and institutions so that we can walk as one with our global family and ensure the sharing of knowledge about how we best can enact repair. Together we will explore questions such as: \n\nWhat are the problems and educational needs here in Bristol?\nWhat reparatory actions can we take that are meaningful for communities globally?\nWhat kind of community institutions do we need to build to tackle our problems?\n\nWe hope you will join us\, food and educational material provided. Donations accepted to cover costs and we would appreciate if people register in advance so that we have an idea of numbers. \nAgenda:\n6.30pm – Food and welcome\n7.00pm – What is PRALER and what is happening across the network?\n7.30pm – Discussion in breakout groups about calls to action\n8.15pm – Feedback from breakout groups\n8.45pm – Closing and next steps \nAbout the organiser: \nThe Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution (PRALER) is a process led by communities of resistance in the Global South with the aim to challenge the education system and to build globally connected educational processes for us all to learn what we need to advance environmental\, reparatory and cognitive justice\, otherwise known as Planet Repairs. \nHere in Bristol a Community Of Life-long Learning Study Action Group (COLLSAG) is being organised as an educational space which is accountable and directly linked to the communities of resistance in the Global South which are leading the PRALER process\, and we are organising these open meetings to invite people to join us.

SUMMARY:Censoring Palestine: The Weaponisation Of Anti-Semitism Film Screening and Activist Empowerment Q+A
DESCRIPTION:TicketsAbout the film – As the global far-right grows in size and influence\, anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise and an ongoing concerted effort led by Israel’s government is working to frame Palestinian activist groups as the main culprit. Redfish explores how allegations of anti-Semitism levelled against critics of Israeli policies are being weaponised to suppress and censor the global movement in support of Palestinian rights. \nProduced in 2022 the film is more relevant than ever. With the current impending genocide in Gaza and the unwavering support from the German\, British and French Government for this tragedy unfolding in front our eyes\, our film focuses on intervening in the silencing of Palestinian solidarity to inspire critical conversation on what constitutes effective protesting. \nAbout the event – Post the screening our speakers will discuss how ordinary people can become part of an extraordinary community. We will explore lessons from previous anti-war revolutions that aim to intervene in the theatre of power dynamics\, resulting in us being marched from A-B by the very institutions whose intention it is to crack down on our necessity to revolt. \nIf you would like to celebrate the beauty and potentialities of the human radical imagination and explore critical examples of tactical\, strategic and ethical examples that disrupt the war-machine\, then come along. \nOur capacity is very limited and we ask that everyone who wishes to attend commits totally to life-long radical anti-imperialist struggle and more strategic ways of protest and direct action. \nCritical questions will be explored including (1) What is possible to advocate? (2) What can we do with our experience? (3) What do effective protest movements look like? (4) How to catalyse youth leadership that creates concerted and sustained revolutionary movements and effective mass civil disobedience? \nWe owe it to the people in Gaza. \nWe ask everyone to donate to Keep active for Palestine – ACLAÍ Gym solidarity and share it among their networks. \nOpening time: 16:30\nClosing time: 19:30

SUMMARY:Religion and Socialism November session - Sikhism
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn this second session we will look at Marx’s own view on religion. Is religion always an ‘opiate of the masses’\, a blinding ideology that stops revolutionary potential? Or is religion necessary in a painful world? Readings to follow. \n\nWhat is the relationship between religion and socialism? Should there even be one? What can a largely secular movement take and learn from faith traditions? How can leftwing and faith communities work together to improve society today? \nFollowing on from the successful/insightful/interesting panel session at this year’s Bristol Transformed\, BT is starting a reading and discussion group along similar themes. Each month we will pursue a different set theme with the discussion based loosely around a choice of reading – Introductory\, further and podcast options will be available to suit your expertise\, interests and time constraints. \nOver the course of the year we intend to cover the Marxist approach to religion\, the history of how religious and leftwing political movements have influenced each other and start to consider what the modern left could learn from religious practices. \nWe welcome participation from all people: those of all faiths\, all political beliefs and none are invited to join the discussion. \nThe sessions will mostly be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format which means that they are interactive and participatory with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDon’t worry if you’re worrying about managing to complete the reading. Do your best. Turning up and taking part is more important. \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. The sessions will take place on the following Tuesdays: Sept 19th\, Oct 10th\, Nov 7th\, Dec 5th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:Psychedelics & Psychosis: Talks on Altered States & Learning From Madness
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nPsychedelics and Psychosis: Talks on Altered States and Learning From Madness\nBoth psychedelic and psychotic states are\, in mainstream Anglo-Western culture\, framed and controlled by the institution of Psychiatry. Yet\, whereas psychedelics are becoming posited as healing medicines\, madness remains arguably\, the most total form of pathology. \nThese two enlightening talks\, with a Q&A\, will delve into the curious and fascinating interplay between psychedelics and psychosis. Researcher Dr Sabina Wantoch will first discuss how the social environment shapes our understanding and experience of these states\, shedding light on the cultural and psychiatric perspectives that frame these experiences. Therapist and psychiatrist Charlotte Bamber will then discuss the fine line between transformation and crisis\, exploring the concept of spiritual emergency induced by psychedelics\, in light of her own recovery journey. \nFirst talk- Psychosis vs Psychedelics: A Question of Social Context\nWhat relationship is there between the social world contexts we have for divergent states\, and the first-person experience of those states?\nBased on Dr Wantoch’s PhD research\, this presentation compares the consensus ‘worlds’ of psychotic and psychedelic states. They consider the role that social contextualisation of divergent states plays in affirming a shared sense of reality; through contextualising states as ‘psychedelic’\, ‘mystical’\, ‘spiritual emergencies\,’ or ‘mad’\, we relate to those states with certain assumptions. Sabina will examine these assumptions\, question their boundaries\, and consider their roles in the experiences they seek to respond to. The psychiatric context for mad states categorises them as symptoms of a mind unable to be understood or integrated\, arguably pushing a person’s sense of reality further away from a shared field. In light of these contrasts\, Sabina will discuss the question\, is the ‘tipping point’ of madness thus the absence of adequate social context? \nSpeaker – Dr Sabina Wantoch\nDr Sabina Wantoch is currently lecturing at UCL on the Health Humanities MA. They recently completed their PhD at Uni of Sheffield on the phenomenology of madness\, and how the way that society frames madness affects the structure of the mad experience. They research how non-ordinary experience is conceptualised and navigated in the world\, how it feels\, and how these interrelate. They are also a long-term volunteer for PsyCare UK\, supporting people undergoing a psychedelic crisis. Their relationship with anomalous experience\, spirituality\, and their own neurodivergence and work with neurodivergent people\, informs their academic work\, and vice versa. They are an advocate of more understanding\, intersection\, and allyship between the areas of madness and psychedelics. \nSecond talk – Navigating psychedelics and spiritual emergency: personal insights\nPsychedelics can be extremely valuable in uncovering long-standing trauma but this can be quite damaging if there is not adequate support afterwards to process and integrate the uncovered material. This is where someone can easily tip into psychosis and spiritual emergency. In this talk\, Charlotte will share insights she has gained from her own personal journey of using psychedelics and spiritual emergencies. She will discuss how to navigate through these experiences with mixed modalities\, including a strong grounding in nature and spiritual practices. \nSpeaker – Charlotte Bamber\nCharlotte is a western trained medical doctor and worked in the NHS as a psychiatrist. She has also trained as a psychotherapist and in Yin and Hatha yoga. She has a strong vocational calling in healing and integration particularly from challenging life experiences and mental and physical health problems. Within her personal journey of healing and recovery from mental health problems\, she found the use of psychedelics like LSD\, psilocybin\, and Ayahuasca both helpful but also tools to be used with great care\, respect and appropriateness. She uses both her professional and personal experience to tailor her care towards someone’s direct personal experience and draw upon their own innate wisdom.

SUMMARY:Just Stop Oil - Welcome Talk with Roger Hallam
DESCRIPTION:Free tickets\nWith special guest speaker Roger Hallam!\n“If governments are serious about the climate crisis\, there can be no new investments in oil\, gas and coal\, from now – from this year.”\nFatih Birol\, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (May 2021) \n“I believe that what we do in the next 3 to 4 years will determine the future of humanity”\nProfessor Sir David King\, former UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (2021) \nAllowing the extraction of new oil and gas resources in the UK is obscene\, a genocidal policy that will kill our children and condemn humanity to oblivion. It just has to stop. \n️There can be no new oil anywhere in the world\, if governments are serious about climate (the IEA). If we continue down our current path it will destroy families and communities. We will face the starvation and the slaughter of billions – and the utter betrayal of our children and this country. \nThis choice of rapid transition to a low energy\, low carbon world or social collapse is now inevitable. We can do it now\, in an orderly manner – creating millions of proper skilled jobs and protecting the rights of workers in sunset industries – or we wait for the unavoidable collapse. \nClimate collapse will mean the end of workers rights\, women’s rights\, all human rights. It is already the greatest injustice visited on the global south in human history. It is time to put everything aside\, it’s either survival solidarity now or collective failure. \nCome and hear more.

SUMMARY:BODIED CANVAS - A women's circle through playful channels of expression
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to compliment a stranger? Have you ever taken inspiration from other women? Have you ever been an inspiration to other women? Do you want to break the personal barrier you hold for yourself and inspire others? Bodied Canvas aims to smash those barriers with yourself and to connect with others. \nBodied Canvas will collectively discuss how we play down our achievements\, skills\, expertise\, what we like about ourselves\, our personality or even our bodies to stay humble. Together we will undress our emotional layers to bring some clarity to the language we use to undermine what we have to say and taking space. \nBody painting takes place over the second half of the workshop where we will get to decorate each other as a sign of empowerment\, admiration and camaraderie. \nWe adorn ourselves not because we hide but because we want to be seen\, to own our skin and wear it proudly. \nThe act of women beautifying one another is an ancestral ceremony that takes different shapes in every culture\, from henna tattoos\, cornrows braids and bantu knots\, Huadian make-up in China or piercing traditions. \nBy decorating each other\, we empower other women sharing the gift of our unique creative expression through paint. We influence each other\, support one another and grow stronger together in often invisible ways. Through paint we will leave physical marks of our commitment to have each other’s backs. We are all unique and different and our journeys are too but we have all gone through similar experiences and we use that to empower each other and with it ourselves. \nWHAT TO EXPECT : In this workshop we will practice codes of assertiveness as part of the process of supporting one another. We will do body and creative warm up before decorating each other. The workshop includes snacks and hot beverages followed by integration and a relaxation ceremony. You will not be expected to allow all of your body to be painted or for every participant to do so. This workshop also encourages us to remove guilt practicing assertiveness claiming ownership of our bodies and sharing whatever we want whenever we want to. \nWe use water based body paint\, we will test it on your skin upon arrival. \nParticipants are expected to bring a towel for drying and a dressing gown/kimono/big shirt. \n*Open to all women: cis\, trans and non-binary resonating with the gender identity of woman. If you have any queries regarding our inclusion policy\, please don’t hesitate to ask. \nWhile we do our best to create a safe and inclusive space\, it is each individual’s responsibility to look after their needs and boundaries. Please raise any concerns you may have in advance to improve the experience and accommodate you. \nPlease contact us if you are not able to afford the ticket and need a reduced fee\, we want you to join. \nPlease contact us on email hidden; JavaScript is required

SUMMARY:Religion and Socialism #2

SUMMARY:Building foundations for resilient grassroot networks
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nHow do we build strong foundations for a resilient grassroots network?\nJoin us for a relaxed and welcoming evening to explore and unpack the question above at this Planet Local Summit fringe event. \nInspired by the Planet Local Summit\, panellists from some of Bristol’s most active grassroots projects and organisations (Shift Bristol\, The Bristol Commons\, Transition) will gather to share our insights and experience in what fosters and supports authentic\, lasting and united action. \nWe will open the conversation to include a wide range of angles; from the group dynamic skills needed to help support relationships within networks\, to the design of communication channels to facilitate collaborative working. \nAfter the panel discussion we will host a peer-led ‘Open Space’\, where attendees can form groups to explore and participate in emergent conversations rising from the evening. Having space to talk in-person\, is one of the most valuable ways to build resilient grassroots networks following the aftermath of isolation\, caused by the global pandemic. \nShift Bristol will assimilate the discussions from the evening to share with participants afterwards. This cycle of coming together\, exploring\, generating ideas\, gathering the fruits\, and then sharing before taking action\, is another important step in building resilience. \nTHE PANEL\nHannah Padgett\nHas over ten years experience involving communities in the design of the objects\, environments and messages that fill their everyday lives. She has worked in areas such as street design\, active travel\, social health and public art\, supporting key stakeholders and public champions\, local authorities and institutions\, businesses and individuals to come together to co-create outcomes that are informed by the people that use them. Hannah was a Practical Sustainability Course student in 2018/19 and currently makes use of her shifty skills at the Ecological Land Cooperative as Community Development Manager\, as Founding Director of Hay Regenerative Soils CIC and as an artisan cheese maker. \nDanny Balla\nDanny is a creative facilitator dedicated to creating systemic change. He explores human relationships with the world and each other through immersive projects of participatory theatre\, storytelling and film. Daniel is passionate about facilitation and experiential tools for participatory democracy. He has worked with Coexist since 2011\, and is dedicated to exploring strategies for systemic change including Coexist’s manifesto to ‘Rebuild The Commons’. \nLaura Corfield\nSince 2004 Laura has volunteered with a host of community engagement and sustainability groups; including co-founding Transition Keynsham\, Frack Free Somerset and participating in Climate Action camps and demonstrations. In 2010 she co-founded Shift Bristol with Sarah Pugh and went on to project manage the Practical Sustainability Course. She is now the Creative Director of Shift Bristol and is passionate about Group Skills education\, as a key factor in the success of networks collaborating successfully in the future. \nMike Thomas – Transition\nHas worked in the Third Sector for over 25 years in a wide variety of roles. He is now working at Transition Network where he thinks systemically about how to support the Transition Movement by developing and delivering a variety of projects large and small. He currently oversees the Transition Together project covering the UK. \nTea & coffee refreshments will be supplied on the evening
