SUMMARY:Data rights\, workers rights and the gig economy
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Transformed and Open Rights Group Bristol present an evening of thought provoking talks on data rights\, workers rights and the gig economy. After a contribution from each speaker\, we will have a panel discussion with opportunity for questions from the audience. \nData Access: how to protect worker rights in the gig economy\nJames Farrar\, Worker Info Exchange\nGig employers such as Uber and Deliveroo use a massive asymmetry in information power to both exploit workers and build powerful commercial networks. The workforce is atomised and kept in the dark so organising can be difficult. Accessing employment rights can be stymied if the worker cannot evidence management control that is hidden in algorithms kept behind the digital curtain. But provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provides important data access rights that will become increasingly important as the gateway for digital workers to secure worker rights. Join this discussion and learn how Worker Info Exchange is helping gig workers access\, aggregate and understand their personal data at work and how data is helping workers organise for a more just future. \nData Justice in the Workplace\nLina Dencik\, Data Justice Lab\nThe dual occurrences of constant data collection and use of artificial and autonomous systems in the workplace are having a profound impact on workers’ lives. Workers are subjected to constant surveillance that not only monitor worker productivity but factors unrelated to work. At the same time\, machine learning systems are using these data to transform how work is being allocated\, assessed and completed and as a result\, worker lives and value in the workplace. These systems are implemented with little discussion with workers about why it’s necessary\, what is being collected\, or how that information will be used. What rights do workers have to that information\, to ensure that data is collected fairly and accountably\, and how are they able to mediate\, circumvent or resist the implementation and uses of data? How does the idea of data justice manifest itself in the workplace? In this talk\, I will map some of the trends in data-driven technologies\, from hiring systems to performance assessment tools\, and discuss what this means for situating concerns with data as part of a workers’ rights agenda. \nSurviving insecurity and protesting injustice in the hidden gig economy\nAlex Wood\, Oxford Internet Institute\nHundreds of thousands of workers in the UK are part of a hidden global gig economy. These workers are using platforms to remotely undertake tasks such as translation\, transcription\, programming\, digital marketing\, graphic design and data entry for clients potentially located on the other side of the world. Despite usually working from their homes\, these workers are coming together to build communities to survive the insecurity inherent to the gig economy. This talk will explore the common grievances which platforms generate among these disparate workers and the emerging organisations and embryonic forms of action which workers are using to protest injustice in the hidden gig economy.

SUMMARY:Don't Attack Iran - Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The threat of war with Iran is terrifying and the behaviour of the US government risks making the danger real. Rather than falling in line with the Trump administration’s dangerous brinkmanship\, the British government should be calling for de-escalation and explicitly ruling out military options.

SUMMARY:Stolen w/ Grace Blakeley // Bristol Launch
DESCRIPTION:In the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crisis\, booming banks\, rising house prices and cheap consumer goods propped up living standards in the rich world. Thirty years of rocketing debt and financial wizardry had masked the deep underlying fragility of finance-led growth\, and in 2008 we were forced to pay up. \nThe decade since has witnessed all kinds of morbid symptoms\, as all around the rich world\, wages and productivity are stagnant\, inequality is rising\, and ecological systems are collapsing. \nStolen is a history of finance-led growth and a guide as to how we might escape it. We’ve sat back as financial capitalism has stolen our economies\, our environment and even the future itself. Now\, we have an opportunity to change course. What happens next is up to us. \nGrace Blakeley (New Statesman Economics Editor) will be in conversation discussing her new book. \nTickets available from Headfirst. If you can’t afford it but would like to come\, please get in touch with Bristol Transformed (details below)\, we may be able to arrange something for you.

SUMMARY:Book reading: Voices of Bristol: Gentrification & Us
DESCRIPTION:Henry Palmer grew up in the ward of Easton between 1998-2010. Back then\, the European Commission classed it one of the most deprived wards in the south west of England. When returning to Bristol in 2016\, however\, Henry was shocked to hear his old area being described as ‘up-and-coming’. Exploring why and what this meant led him to write a book on the gentrification of Bristol. The book explores its financial and cultural consequences\, points to real culprits deserving of our focus\, and puts forth solutions in the form of Central government policy change and the need for understanding. \nHenry will be attending\, along with others who’ve read the book\, though everyone is welcome to this night of empathetic discourse.

SUMMARY:The Bristol Cable present: Chav Solidarity with author D Hunter
DESCRIPTION:The Bristol Cable welcomes author D Hunter to present his book “Chav Solidarity” – “part autobiography\, part meditation on trauma\, class and identity\, part one finger salute into the face of respectability politics\, but mostly an articulation of the contradictory heart of Chavvy sh*t heads across the U.K”. \nHunter will read excerpts from the book\, as well as discussing it’s origins and surrounding issues. This will be followed by a question and answer session and open discussion regarding the issues raised in the book. \nHunter uses his experiences as child sex worker\, teenage crack addict\, violent thug and community activist to examine the ways in which our classed experiences shape the ways in which we think and do our politics. \nContent Warning: Throughout the book there are references to sexual violence\, racism (both interpersonal and institutional)\, gendered violence (physical\, psychological and verbal)\, various forms of physical violence\, suicide\, drug usage\, transphobia\, murder\, and police brutality. The subjects discussed in this event may reflect the book content. \nFree/donation tickets for members and £3 for non-members –  available here.

SUMMARY:National Food Service: what would decommodified food provision look like?
DESCRIPTION:Food is a basic human right and yet in this country around 500\,000 people are reliant on food banks. Food poverty is affecting our health and is affecting children’s quality of life and education. Food production is also critical to climate change processes and can be a tool through which we combat the destruction of our planet. \nRecognising the integral human rights to good health and education\, we have developed a decommodified National Health Service and a National Education Service; why does the UK not have a National Food Service? \nWhat would a National Food Service look like? How would it differ to our current system? How does the current system fail us and the planet? And importantly\, if we want a NFS how would we get there? \nTo answer all of these questions we have a panel of food activists who will also discuss their involvement in food production and provision. On the panel: Louise Delmege\, a volunteer for Foodhall community kitchen\, the people behind the push for a National Food Service; and more TBA.

SUMMARY:Marx at the Arcade: Consoles\, Controllers\, and Class
DESCRIPTION:In Marx at the Arcade (Haymarket Books)\, acclaimed researcher Jamie Woodcock delves into the hidden abode of the gaming industry. In an account that will appeal to hardcore gamers\, digital skeptics\, and the joystick-curious\, Woodcock unravels the vast networks of artists\, software developers\, and factory and logistics workers whose seen and unseen labor flows into the products we consume on a gargantuan scale. Along the way\, he analyzes the increasingly important role the gaming industry plays in contemporary capitalism and the broader transformations of work and the economy that it embodies. \nJamie Woodcock is a sociologist of work\, focusing on digital labor\, the gig economy\, and resistance. He is currently a fellow at the London School of Economics and is the author of the award-winning Working the Phones (2016). He is on the editorial board of Historical Materialism and an editor of Notes from Below\, an online journal of workers’ inquiry. \nTickets now available from Headfirst.

SUMMARY:Bearpit Outdoor Gallery Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening night- 6- 9pm on the 9th August \nOpen every day 12-5pm Saturday August 10th to Sunday August 18th \nWhatever else people think of the Bearpit\, before the recent council take-back it had grown into a space covered in art\, and a part of the visual culture of the city. Everything graff and street art could be seen down there\, ceramic installations\, huge (and never defaced!) murals\, paste-ups and stickers\, tags and throwies\, impromptu exhibitions\, and even a few big installations which took over the whole Bearpit. Not to mention Ursa the Bear herself! \nIn a celebration of the diverse and incredible artwork which the walls of the Bearpit have featured\, in August we’re creating an exhibition from the shattered remains of the art boards the PRSC originally installed all those years ago. Some as they were returned to us\, some re-painted by the various artists who painted down there over the years\, and others cut down into smaller canvasses so that you can take a piece of the project home with you. We will also be showing photos from our extensive archive. \nJoin us at the PRSC Space on the opening night of Friday 9 August (6-9pm)\, or 12-5pm daily until 18 August\, for a last chance to share memories and visit this optimistic experiment in expressive freedom.

SUMMARY:McMindfulness
DESCRIPTION:From celebrity endorsements to monks\, neuroscientists and meditation coaches rubbing shoulders with CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos\, it is clear that mindfulness has gone mainstream. Some have even called it a revolution. But what if\, instead of changing the world\, mindfulness has become a banal form of capitalist spirituality that mindlessly avoids social and political transformation\, reinforcing the neo-liberal status quo? \nWriter + academic Ronald Purser will be joining us in conversation with Hettie O’Brien to debunk the so-called “mindfulness revolution”\, exposing how corporations\, schools\, governments and the military have co-opted it as technique for social control and self-pacification. \nTickets are £3 each\, available from Headfirst.
