SUMMARY:Angela Davis: A Revolutionary Life
DESCRIPTION:The second in our series of events commemorating 1968. \nAngela Davis has been a revolutionary socialist since the 1960s. Active as a member of the Communist Party of the USA\, she opposed the Vietnam war and was notable for supporting the Civil Rights and Black Power struggles of the period. \nDavis is a lifelong anti-imperialist who played a prominent role in opposing the Iraq war in 2003 and who has consistently supported the Palestinians. \nMuch of her theoretical work has examined the relationship between different forms of oppression\, in particular the trinity of class\, gender and race. \nOver time her popularity has arguably grown. Her speech at the Washington Women’s march in January 2017 was watched by millions of people across the world. Her image as a revolutionary icon is constantly reproduced. \nCome and hear Counterfire activist and SOAS lecturer Feyzi Ismail present an introduction to Angela Davis’s life and politics. \nIn order to cover our costs we usually ask for £2/3 from those able to afford it.

SUMMARY:Not That Easy
DESCRIPTION:‘Not That Easy’ – Bristol DramSoc \n‘Not That Easy’ is an hour-long piece telling two stories from refugees who have come to the UK\, and their experiences here. They are given to us by Dave Smith from his book ‘Refugee Stories; It’s Not Easy’\, and are based on his interviews with refugees he knew working at the Boaz Trust. We are doing this piece in partnership with City of Sanctuary in Bristol\, a charity which focuses on working with refugee charities in Bristol to make Bristol effective as a City of Sanctuary\, which it officially identifies as. \nWe particularly hope that this piece will be able to help their current ‘Dignity not Destitution’ campaign\, by raising awareness of the perils refugees encounter when they do finally arrive here\, due to the shocking behaviour of the government systems in place. \nDates: 22nd and 23rd March\, 7:30 \nPrices: \nGeneral : £10\nStudent : £8\nDramsoc : £7

SUMMARY:Freak by Anna Jordan
DESCRIPTION:‘They think I am the most beautiful thing in the world. And I don’t mind being a thing. I don’t want their respect. I want only their animal desire.’ \nFREAK explores female sexuality\, self-image and sexual exploitation\, in a comedic\, relatable and sometimes shocking manner. It follows the sex lives of two women at very different stages of their lives\, and looks at how societal ideals affect them emotionally and influence their decisions. Leah has just come out of puberty and is apprehensive about this whole new world of sex and sexiness\, and how to remain popular. Conversely we have Georgie\, thirty\, who has just come out of a long-term relationship and spontaneously decided to become a stripper. The audience are guaranteed to laugh\, cry and most of all feel nostalgic for experiences we have all shared whilst growing up. \nBullet Theatre is a new Bristol-based company founded by three women. Connecting media headlines to diary scribbles\, our work aims to boldly and unashamedly explore the experience of being female. Ooh…now that’s a turn on! \nHaving made its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 to raring reviews (‘vivid\, funny and sad’- The Guardian) we are adapting our own interpretation of Anna Jordan’s punchy and provocative play to bring to Bristol\, interweaving Jordan’s poetic writing with innovative physical theatre. \nEvent dates: Thursday 15/03/2018 and Friday 16/03/2018 \nTickets: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/231737

SUMMARY:Coldharbour Lane
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Elephant\, a new Bristol based theatre company\, is here with its first show\, ‘Coldharbour Lane’ by Ella Alalade. \nSet in 1981\, a local resident has just been killed in the Brixton Riots. Three teenagers: Sam\, Nadia and Daniel are thrown together as they struggle to find their place in an uncertain world\, which is changing all around them.\n15 years later they return\, to see Mandela walk through Brixton\, after his freedom 2 years before. Yet has anything really changed? Were all those people’s deaths meaningless? And what does the future hold for their community?

SUMMARY:Side by Side
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of photographs by Lisa Furness and Sarah Scruff. \nFri 18:00-22:00 | Sat 12:00-19:00 | Sun 12:00-17:00 \nRunning over a single weekend\, Side by Side reveals the parallel journeys of two photographers over several years. Their images are presented as separate but sympathetic collections\, echoing each other and creating new meanings and visual connections in a shared environment. \nLisa’s photography takes an aesthetic tour through squatted communities across Europe\, inviting the viewer to explore and enjoy these unique spaces. Sarah photographs colours\, light and pattern wherever she finds them\, here delving into some of the themes that have emerged over time. \nLisa and Sarah met through the Bristol photography collective Second Look\, and worked on numerous group exhibitions and events together over many years\, discovering a mutual love of colour and free exhibition wine. They collaborated on a photographic study of abandoned airports and a ghost resort in Spain\, with the focus on a single subject emphasising the marked contrast between their photographic styles. \nConsidering how to present these images led to a broader look at their respective bodies of work. Recognising shared themes and recurring visual motifs despite their differing approaches and subject matter\, Lisa and Sarah have decided to bring their pictures together and allow them to converse in a single space. \nFREE ENTRY\nFriday 26 January 18:00 – 22:00\nSaturday 27 January 12:00 – 19:00\nSunday 28 January 12:00 – 17:00 \nSpace at PRSC\, 17-25 Jamaica St\, Bristol BS2 8JP \nLisa Furness: www.furnessphotography.com\nSarah Macfarlane: www.redkids.co.nz/things | Beautiful Things in Foreign Lands

Advertising has become so much a part of our lives that many of usdon’t question them\, and some people say they don’t notice the ads. This is what the advertisers want us to think – so they can carry on feeding us messages to consume\, spend or borrow\, without us even realising it. \nHow can we shift the debate on outdoor advertising so that we can become more aware of the impacts of corporate advertising we see on our streets\, and the damage to our health\, wellbeing\, environment and local economy? \nAdblock Bristol is a group challenging corporate outdoor advertising in Bristol. We want to make Bristol the first UK city to be free from corporate billboards. Sounds great\, doesn’t it? We need your help to make it happen. \nWe’ll explore how advertising works\, what impacts it has\, and why your favourite brand of beans may not be as special as you think. We’ll discuss how we can break through the barrage of consumer nonsense and expose the myths behind the advertising industry. \nLed by Nicola Round and Robbie Gillett. \nFriday 15 at 6.30pm – Artists Talk with Lisa Furness \nAcross the continent buildings and villages lie empty. Largely uncelebrated\, an international community of activists and anarchists makes use of these buildings to address all kinds of social or environmental ills and to engage in alternative ways of life. \nBetween 2012 and 2015 photographer Lisa Furness toured Europe and the UK making a visual record of the squatted communities and projects she found. In this talk she presents stories from some of the amazing places she saw. \nSat- Sun 16-17\, 11am – 3pm drop-in – Painting Workshop \nCome and paint with us. We have some paint\, brushes\, canvases\, boards\, etc. But you are welcome to you bring yours too. The resulting paintings will be on display on the PRSC Outdoor Gallery during the Buy or Burgle It exhibition. Free entry\, ALL WELCOME \nLead by PRSC Team \n9-22 December\, noon – 4pm drop-in any time – Mug decorating \nCan’t make a decorating workshop of don’t want to book? SUMMARY:BUY OR BURGLE IT - Outdoor Rolling Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Friday 1 December\, 6 – 9pm\nThe outdoor rolling exhibition Buy or Burgle It on Jamaica Street wall\, will run throughout December from Saturday 2 until the 23. Make sure to pass by regularly as the exhibition will change daily\, thus creating a rolling exhibition. \nBuy or Burgle It is designed to provide an outlet for aspiring and established artists to showcase and sell their work\, and to offer to the public the opportunity to purchase artworks at an affordable price. Displayed artworks can be purchased at the Stokes Croft China shop\, open 7 days a week Mon-Sat 11-6pm\, Sunday 12-5pm. \n\n\nAs well as providing a canvas for artists to exhibit their work and experiment with weatherproof techniques\, the outdoor gallery aims to give local communities and passers-by a sense of ownership of the public space\, challenging established ideas of private property and commercial enterprise. Hanging the work outside will mean it is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. Trust and respect are therefore central elements of this exhibition. \nArtists taking part to Buy Or Burgle It are: Alpha Wilson\, Annie Lilygreen\, Ben Hartley\, Benoit Bennett\, Hannah Anderson\, James George\, Jill Eastland\, Justin Quinnell\, Lara Luna Bartley\, Pablo Teresa\, Phoebe Tye\, Rebecca Hiscocks\, Ruby Fleming\, Wistful Horizons\, Shaun Harrigan\, Tudor Titzoiu\, Thomas Eastland and Xavier Roy.

SUMMARY:Art of The Street - Film Series - Screening 5: Street Art. Painting in the City: London\, Paris\, Madrid
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth investigation of street art\, stickers\, posters\, graffiti and culture jamming.\nPRSC is pleased to invite you to Art of The Street\, a series of 5 films followed by a discussion\, focused on providing a wider understanding of the origins of Graffiti Art\, its further developments and influences in contemporary culture. \nThe term Graffiti Arts has been used since the late 70’s to define text-based tagging (personalised signature) and drawings on walls and trains. Since then\, Graffiti Art had followed an organic development of expressive tools as a commentary of our urban environment and culture jamming. Messages of peace\, friendship\, denial of restrictions\, protest\, etc. convey a commentary around the city we live in and encourage debates on the ownership of the public space. \nThe constant flux of influences ranging from design\, publicity\, the contemporary art stream and its questioning contributes to define the visual and engaging urban art we see every day. \nScreening 5: Street Art. Painting in the City: London\, Paris\, Madrid\, 2008 \nThe term ‘street art’ has evolved to define the more visual and engaging aspects of urban art\, as opposed to simply text-based graffiti and tagging. This film follows cult figures such as Blek Le Rat\, Nano 4814\, Nuria\, Sweet Toof\, NoNose and Eine as they work on the pavements of Paris\, London and Madrid and create new pieces. It discusses the varying approaches to street art in these three cities. It also introduces some of the artists taking part in the first ever street art exhibition at Tate Modern in 2008\, and explores the rapidly expanding commercial market that is turning street artists into big earners at the auction houses. What does this newfound profitable aspect mean for this formerly underground and anti-establishment scene? \nDuration: 22 mins \nDoors open at 7pm\, the film will start at 7.30pm followed by a short discussion. \nSuggested donation £5 for a beer/soft drink and pop-corn. \nPlease register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/art-of-the-street-film-series-street-art-painting-in-the-city-london-paris-madrid-2008-tickets-37649607991

SUMMARY:Fighting the Cuts
DESCRIPTION:How do we fight back against the cuts? How do we get the word out about the damage that the Tories are forcing onto Bristol? \nBristol is facing a budget deficit of over £100 million by 2020. This current “graph of doom” means our Labour council is being forced by the Tories to make harsh cuts. Proposals include closing 17 out of the 27 libraries in Bristol\, and until recently the council tax reduction scheme for the poorest in the city. \nOur speakers include Esther Giles\, Bristol local campaign forum treasurer\, a speaker on the affect of the cuts\, and Ange Crossley (Secretary of Bristol East CLP).

SUMMARY:Straight Outta Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Something happened in the St Paul’s area of Bristol in the early 80s that contributed hugely to what became known as the Bristol Sound. Massive Attack\, Tricky\, Portishead\, Gary Clail\, Smith & Mighty\, Fresh Four and others found international fame for their musical style of broken beats and soulful reggae tinged with dub and hip-hop that became known (much to the artists’ annoyance) as Trip Hop. \nRichard Jones from Tangent Books\, whose music titles include The Art & Sound of the Bristol Undergound\, Wild Dayz\, My Festival Romance (WOMAD)\, Punks on Scooters\, Bristol Boys Make More Noise and The Naked Guide to Bristol is joined by special guests to explore the origins of the music that made Bristol a capital of counter-culture and urban cool. \nDr Peter Webb is a writer\, academic and musician who specialises in research into popular and contemporary music\, and subcultures. He is a founder of PC Press\, publisher of Test Dept: Total State Machine and Twilight of the Mortals a collection of the incredible work of photographer and post-punk DJ Mont Sherar and the result of his 36-year love affair with the band Killing Joke. Pete is also a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Sociology at the University of the West of England\, Bristol and in a previous life was part of the Statik Sound System. \nGill Loats is the author of Bristol Boys Make More Noise\, a Tangent Books/Bristol Archive Records collaboration featuring the late 70s/early 80s photography of John Spink. Gill was also the first woman DJ at the legendary Dug Out club. She is currently completing a book about the history of the Dug Out. \nBertel Martin was one of the cohort of youngsters from St Paul’s and Montpelier who were at the heart of the movement that developed into the Bristol Sound. He went on to work at the Kuumba African Arts project in St Paul’s and founded City Chameleon press and the Word of Mouth/Blahblahblah spoken word events. Bertel was the first Director of the Plymouth International Book Festival. \nTickets £5 from Bristol Ticket Shop

SUMMARY:Art of The Street - Film Series - Screening 4: Style Wars
\nScreening 4: Style Wars by Tony Silver\, 2007\nIn the fall of 1983\, PBS premiered Style Wars\, a documentary that chronicled New York City’s youth culture\, focusing in on two of its most exciting (and polarizing) facets: break dancing and graffiti. The brainchild of director/producer Tony Silver and producer Henry Chalfant\, the film features both eager artists and naysaying officials as it captures what was\, quite literally\, a vanishing New York. \nThe definitive book to go along with Style wars is “Subway Art” by Henry Chalfant who also produced style Wars. He and Martha Cooper spent a huge amount of time photographing NYC subways\, and their hard work is well documented on the 2nd DVD which contains 32 artist galleries and a 30-minute loop of train photos. \nDuration: 91 mins \nDoors open at 7pm\, the film will start at 7.30pm followed by a short discussion. \nSuggested donation £5 for a beer/soft drink and pop-corn. \nPlease register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/art-of-the-street-film-series-style-wars-by-tony-silver-2007-tickets-37649399367

SUMMARY:Prof Nick Pearce - Politics and policy
DESCRIPTION:Eminent scholar Prof Nick Pearce will be speaking to Bristol Young Labour Members about politics and policy\, with plenty of chances for you to ask questions and discuss the ideas put forward. \nProf Nick currently runs the Institute for Policy Research at Bath Uni where his projects include:\n– The idea of the Anglosphere in British Politics\n– Examining universal basic income\n– Open City: London after Brexit\n– The Scottish Labour Party\n– The political economy of welfare state reform \nBefore this\, he ran the IPPR (there is a theme in his thinktank names)\, which is one of the best known leftwing thinktanks in the UK. \nHe also ran Gordon Brown’s policy unit from 2008-2010 and so will undoubtedly have some insights about how the next Labour government can form\, excecute and update its programme. \nIt is likely that afterwards we will head somewhere for a ~lemonade~.

SUMMARY:Art of The Street - Film Series - Screening 3: Helvetica
DESCRIPTION:*DATE CHANGED* An in-depth investigation of street art\, stickers\, posters\, graffiti and culture jamming.\n \n  \nPRSC is pleased to invite you to Art of The Street\, a series of 5 films followed by a discussion\, focused on providing a wider understanding of the origins of Graffiti Art\, its further developments and influences in contemporary culture. \nThe term Graffiti Arts has been used since the late 70’s to define text-based tagging (personalised signature) and drawings on walls and trains. The documentary\, produced in 2007 (and thus commemorating the typeface’s 50th anniversary)\, uses the omnipresent font as a lens through which it examines contemporary visual culture and how typeface is used\, aesthetically\, spatially\, and culturally\, to impart shape and character to urban environments. Hustwit then segues into a discussion with a number of acclaimed designers about their work\, their creative visions and processes\, and the aesthetic reasoning behind various decisions regarding font. Hustwit interviews over 20 design experts in the film\, including Michael C. Place\, Paula Scher\, Matthew Carter\, and David Carson. ~ Nathan Southern\, Rovi.Duration: 95 mins \nDoors open at 7pm\, the film will start at 7.30pm followed by a short discussion. \nSuggested donation £5 for a beer/soft drink and pop-corn. \nPlease register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/art-of-the-street-film-series-helvetica-by-gary-hustwit-2007-tickets-37649201776
