SUMMARY:Religion and Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nIn this first session\, as an introduction\, we will look at the notable Tony Benn essay on the radical potential of Christianity. \nReading list: Tony Benn on Revolutionary Christianity \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \n________________________________________ \nWhat is the relationship between religion and socialism? Should there even be one? What can a largely secular movement take and learn from faith traditions? How can leftwing and faith communities work together to improve society today? \nFollowing on from the insightful panel session at this year’s Bristol Transformed\, BT is starting a reading and discussion group along similar themes. Each month we will pursue a different set theme with the discussion based loosely around a choice of reading – Introductory\, further and podcast options will be available to suit your expertise\, interests and time constraints. \nOver the course of the year we intend to cover the Marxist approach to religion\, the history of how religious and leftwing political movements have influenced each other and start to consider what the modern left could learn from religious practices. \nWe welcome participation from all people: those of all faiths\, all political beliefs and none are invited to join the discussion. \nThe sessions will mostly be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format which means that they are interactive and participatory with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDon’t worry if you’re worrying about managing to complete the reading. Do your best. Turning up and taking part is more important.

SUMMARY:African Apocalypse: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Want to hear from people on the ground about the current situation in Niger? \nJoin us for a screening of the film ‘African Apocalypse’ which follows the university student Femi Nylander on a journey through Niger\, meeting communities who are still living with the legacies of colonialism\, as well as the young people determined to work towards repair. \nWe will follow the film with a call to action about reparations\, which will be the starting point of building solidarity with the indigenous communities in Niger and the generation of young people who are taking back their future. \nBehind the recent media headlines about Niger is an environmental justice struggle. Uranium from the former French colony is still powering one out of every three lightbulbs in France\, while in Niger itself less than 20% of people have access to electricity; the stopping of French plunder of natural resources needs to be enacted globally. \nDonations accepted to cover costs. \n\nThe Struggle Continues // Fri 18 - Mon 28 August // Open 12:00 - 18:00 daily\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963's Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. SUMMARY:The Struggle Continues
DESCRIPTION:Opening party: Thu 17 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nOpen daily: Fri 18 – Mon 28 Aug\, 12:00 – 18:00\nClosing party: Mon 28 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963’s Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. Artwork and stories from local artists\, community members\, charities\, and campaign groups examine where we have come from and where we are heading. \nThe Bristol Bus Boycott was a critical moment in the history of race relations and civil rights in the UK. However\, celebrations of this historic victory should not encourage a sense of complacency. The struggles for justice and equality\, and the battles of communities against oppressive authorities are ongoing\, and only by continuing the work of those that went before can we protect these rights of generations to come. \nThis exhibition is a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of giants\, that struggles can take decades\, and the fight for civil rights and equality is not over. \nDo you have a personal archive\, artworks or stories relating to the Bristol Bus Boycott\, the 1980s St Pauls uprisings\, Countering Colston\, Occupy\, BLM\, housing struggles in Bristol\, or the Kill The Bill protests and court cases?\nWould you be interested in lending them to this community exhibition? We’re not just looking for documentation of the headline grabbing events\, but the longer campaigns and work that went on before and after the cameras and journalists came. \nGet in contact via email hidden; JavaScript is required with an outline of what you’d like to contribute\, or bring them along to the show to add in real time! \nThe Struggle Continues is a collaboration between the PRSC\, @curiosity_unltd\, @oshiiblklgt\, and many other local artists and activists. Many thanks to Unite the Union for their support. \n\nThe Struggle Continues // Fri 18 - Mon 28 August // Open 12:00 - 18:00 daily\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963's Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. DESCRIPTION:TicketsBristol Transformed are excited to welcome Dan Evans for a discussion of his new book “A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petty Bourgeoisie”. Dan will talk through the key points of his book\, with plenty of time for question\, discussion & debate from the audience. \nThe petty bourgeoisie — the insecure class between the working class and the bourgeoisie — is hugely significant within global politics. Yet it remains something of a mystery. \nInitially identified as a powerful political force by theorists like Marx and Poulantzas\, the petit-bourgeoisie was expected to decline\, as small businesses and small property were gradually swallowed up by monopoly capitalism. Yet\, far from disappearing\, structural changes to the global economy under neoliberalism have instead grown the petty bourgeoisie\, and the individualist values associated with it have been popularized by a society which fetishizes “aspiration”\, home ownership and entrepreneurship. So why has this happened? \nA Nation of Shopkeepers sheds a light on this mysterious class\, exploring the class structure of contemporary Britain and the growth of the petty bourgeoisie following Thatcherism. It shows how the rise of home ownership\, small landlordism and radical changes to the world of work have increasingly inculcated values of petty bourgeois individualism; how popular culture has promoted and reproduced values of aspiration and conspicuous consumption that militate against socialist organizing; and\, most importantly\, what the unstoppable rise of the petit-bourgeoisie means for the left. \nBuy tickets from Headfirst. A Nation of Shopkeepers is available to buy from Repeater Books.

SUMMARY:BARC Open House: Re-Visions of Abolition
DESCRIPTION:Join Bristol Anti-Repression Campaign for a screening and discussion of Re-Visions of Abolition: Abolition Past\, Present and Future. \nThe 55 minute film documents the recent history of the prison abolition movement in the US through the organizing efforts of Critical Resistance and explores the meaning of abolitionist politics. By focusing on the collaboration between Critical Resistance Los Angeles Chapter and A New Way of Life\, and seeing how ongoing abolitionist work draws from other liberation movements\, this film unfolds visions of abolition as an ongoing struggle for freedom from destructive carceral systems. \nWe’ll then have a very relaxed discussion of the film.

SUMMARY:No Bigots\, No Binaries – how can we win LGBT+ liberation?
DESCRIPTION:A new generation of LGBT+ people are out—to take on the system. \nThe Tories are ramping up their war on trans and non-binary people. Rishi Sunak blocking Scotland’s GRA reforms is a threat to trans rights across Britain—and part of a right wing backlash against LGBT+ people. \nIt’s not just in Britain. Whether it’s in Italy or Hungary\, far right governments are attacking LGBT+ people under the guise of “gender ideology”. \nUganda’s government recently passed a vicious homophobic law\, building on the legacy of the British Empire. \nLGBT+ oppression is ingrained throughout society\, but it hasn’t always existed. It’s rooted in the development of capitalism and the nuclear family\, and bigoted ideas are pushed from the top of society. \nIn Britain\, we’ve also seen resistance. The Tories blocking Scottish GRA reforms was met by a wave of resistance\, with young and militant protests from London to the Scottish islands. And the vigils for Brianna Ghey brought thousands more onto the streets. \nThe movement has thrown up huge questions—whether it’s about the roots of oppression\, identity politics\, or strategies to win liberation. \nJoin us to discuss where LGBT+ oppression comes from and how we can win liberation.

SUMMARY:Dragon Boat Fest
DESCRIPTION:TicketsDragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival celebrated across many Asian cultures. Come join us to make iconic rice dumplings\, try out traditional Chinese calligraphy and learn more about the history of Dragon Boat Festival! \n13:00 Wrapping of rice dumplings begins\n14:00 Rice dumplings being boiled\, other activities take place: traditional Chinese calligraphy\, qigong\, panel discussion with open floor questions and more.\n16:00 Rice dumplings boiled and ready to serve \nMade on the Moon\, a collective celebrating East & South East Asian (ESEA) creativity and cultures are back with another event! Our team also organises the annual arts festival MOON FEST\, which sold out Arnolfini last September and welcomed more than 200 people. \nFrom here on\, we are organising more regular opportunities for us to come together. So follow us on Instagram and Facebook to make sure you don’t miss any updates! \n1. What is the Dragon Boat Festival?\nThe Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival\, though similar festivals also exist in other ESEA cultures\, for example\, Japanese (Tango no sekku)\, Vietnamese (Tết Đoan Ngọ)\, Korean (Dano). We welcome learnings and discussion from you too about these traditional festivals if you do celebrate! The Dragon Boat Festival is particularly a commemoration of the ancient poet Qu Yuan. It is celebrated by holding dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings. \n2. Why the Dragon Boat Fest?\nWe cherish our traditional festivals and have unfortunately come across many instances where they are appropriated\, including the Dragon Boat Race by the Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast. At this event\, we hope to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with our community the right\, fun\, inclusive way! \nWe invited 5 Foot Way\, a family run catering company based in Wiltshire to guide us how to put together traditional rice dumplings. They cook for weddings and other private events\, supperclubs and corporate parties. They specialise in Malaysian food and due to the influence of the different ethnic and cultural identities there\, they also cook other South East Asian\, Chinese and Indian dishes. Michelle was born in Malaysia of Chinese heritage and has lived in the UK for the last 40 years. Her husband\, Steve\, is English\, loves Asian food and is king of the satay grill and crispy belly pork. \n3. Who will be there?\nWe welcome friends of East & South East Asian heritages to join\, but all allies are welcome. Please note that while everyone is welcomed\, it is advised that children aged 10 or below do not participate directly in the wrapping of rice dumplings (Free Entry for children aged 10 or below). For children aged 14 or below\, it is advised that they participate in the wrapping of rice dumplings under adult supervision. \n4. What are the tickets?\nThere are two types of tickets\, Early Dragon Dumpling Makers (i.e. Early Bird Tickets) and Final Dumpling Makers (i.e. Main Tickets). All revenue is split between 5 Foot Way and Made on the Moon in covering necessary costs. Each Extra Rice Dumpling is £5 and only a very limited amount is available. \n5. What is a rice dumpling?\nZong\, zhongzi\, bak chang…this iconic traditional food has many names and variations! 5 Foot Way particularly specialises in the savoury kind – bamboo leaf wrapped glutinous rice parcels with meat or vegetarian fillings of your choice. The ingredients used are gluten free but there may be traces of gluten and there are other ingredients with allergens present as listed below:\nCrustaceans (such as prawns\, crabs and lobsters)\, eggs\, )\, peanuts\, soybeans\, and tree nuts (such as almonds\, hazelnuts\, walnuts\, brazil nuts\, cashews\, pecans\, pistachios and macadamia nuts). \n6. Any other reminders?\nWrapping rice dumplings could get messy and participants may also opt to join in a short session of qigong\, so we recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothes which you don’t mind being made dirty. Handwashing facilities are available on site. Please also bring your own cutlery and containers for the environment\, although a number of disposable utensils will be provided. \nOur caterer has the necessary certificates and qualifications to make and sell food. However\, since the event involves the making of food by participants\, please participate only if you have considered and accept to undertake potential risks of safety and hygiene. Made on the Moon organisers would only be liable for any injury occurring as a direct result of our negligence. \nDue to necessary preparation of ingredients in advance\, please note that we are not able to issue any refund for this particular event. \nWe will be taking photographs and videos at the event. They would be shared to our social media pages. If you would rather not appear in any\, please let us know before the event. Thank you! \n7. More questions?\nFeel free to email us at email hidden; JavaScript is required!

SUMMARY:Psychedelics the Great Disrupters: The History & Future of Psychedelic Healthcare with Dr Ben Sessa
DESCRIPTION:Tickets“I remember 15 years ago\, 20 years ago\, when I was a junior doctor\, telling my tutors that I wanted to work in psychedelics\, and they said\, ‘You’re crazy. This is career suicide.’ Well\, I can tell you now: This is not crazy\, fringe hippies. This is cutting edge neuroscience. This is cutting edge clinical psychiatry. Every single major clinical research institution in the world now has psychedelic programs running. This is not the fringe.” – Dr Ben Sessa (2021) \nThe History and Future of Psychedelic Healthcare\nIn this upcoming talk and Q&A\, Dr Ben Sessa will discuss how and why different psychedelics such as MDMA\, ketamine and psilocybin – all of which have different neurobiological profiles and subjective psychological effects – actually have greater similarities than differences when used in a clinical setting. \nUnderlying these similarities\, Ben will describe the traumatic developmental roots of most chronic mental disorders\, and will propose that psychedelics\, used clinically\, are emerging as ‘great disrupters’ of both traditional psychiatric categorical diagnostic systems\, and providing a broad base new approach to treating all trauma-based disorders. \nWith nearly two decades in the industry\, he will also be exploring our current Psychedelic Renaissance\, the development of medicalisation of recent years and some challenges that lie ahead for the newly emerging psychedelics healthcare industry. \nAbout Dr Ben Sessa\nFor over 15 years Dr Ben Sessa has been at the forefront of psychedelic research in the UK through his affiliations with Imperial College London. Ben qualified as a medical doctor from UCL in 1997 and went on to specialise in psychiatry. \nFor 25 years he has worked as a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist with young people and adult patients in the field of addictions and trauma-related psychiatry. Ben started studying psychedelics as a junior doctor\, and has taken part in research projects at Bristol University\, Cardiff University and Imperial College London with LSD\, psilocybin\, DMT\, ketamine and MDMA – receiving and/or administering all of these compounds in legal research settings. \nOne of the first doctors to develop the field of contemporary psychedelic research in the UK\, he is the co-founder of Awakn Life Sciences\, a Bio-Tech company carrying out psychedelic research into addictions\, with ketamine and MDMA. He was one of the first Medical Cannabis psychiatric prescribers in the UK and is an approved and registered MDMA\, ketamine and psilocybin therapist. He has led research into MDMA-assisted therapy for Alcohol Use Disorder and is published widely in the academic and medical press. \nBen is the co-founder and past president of the Breaking Convention conference. He is the author of The Psychedelic Renaissance (2012/2017)\, the novel ‘To Fathom Hell or Soar Angelic’ (2015) and Altered States (2021). Ben lives and works in Bristol\, UK. \nYou can learn more about Ben by visiting his website here: www.drsessa.com \nThe venue doors and bar will be open from 7.30pm for people to arrive\, grab a drink and socialise and network with like-minded\, psychedelic-interested others before the talk officially begins at 8pm.
