SUMMARY:Daring to Hope: Book Launch with Sheilah Rowbotham
DESCRIPTION:In this powerful memoir Sheila Rowbotham looks back at the women’s liberation movement\, left politics and the vibrant\, creative culture of a decade in which freedom and equality seemed possible. It is a riveting personal history of second wave feminism from the front line. \nAfter addressing the first Women’s Liberation Conference at Ruskin College\, Oxford\, in 1970\, she went on to encourage night cleaners to unionise\, immortalised in the film Nightcleaners\, to campaign for nurseries and abortion rights\, and to play an influential role in discussions of socialist feminist ideas. It is also an account of her attempt to live her politics: bringing to life meetings\, magazines\, child care networks\, grass roots movements\, along with communal houses and squats\, and a shared impetus to organize collectively and to love without jealousy or domination. By the middle of the decade her prolific writing – journalism and poetry as well as social history – had attracted a wide international readership. She describes the publication of Women\, Resistance and Revolution (1972)\, Hidden from History and Woman’s Consciousness\, Man’s World (1973)\, seminal works that were translated into many languages and remain in print half a century later. \nThrough this whole decade she charts the women’s liberation movement and its place within a larger politics\, including the decline of the Labour Party. As the decade ends\, with Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street\, the movement has started to fracture. Alongside others she tried to hold together the socialist feminist hopes with Beyond the Fragments. \nSheila Rowbotham\, who helped start the women’s liberation movement in Britain\, is known internationally as an historian of feminism and radical social movements. She is the author of the ground-breaking books Women\, Resistance and Revolution; Woman’s Consciousness\, Man’s World; and Hidden from History. Her later works include Promise of a Dream: Remembering the Sixties; Dreamers of a New Day: Women Who Invented the Twentieth Century; and the biography Edward Carpenter: A Life of Liberty and Love\, shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize and winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Biography. Her poetry and two plays have been published and she has written for newspapers and journals in Britain\, the US\, Italy\, Brazil\, Turkey\, Sweden and Sri Lanka. An Honorary Fellow of Manchester University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, she lives in Bristol. \nThis is a Bristol Transformed event.

SUMMARY:No Great Crime: Bristol's Arresting Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening night: Thursday 22 July\, 6-10pm\nOpening hours: Tuesday – Sunday\, 12-6pm \nWhen we first talked about hosting this show at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft\, we thought of it as a fringe event to the Vanguard exhibition at M Shed. Of course\, it’s not an official fringe show\, but with Vanguard exploring the council approved\, sanitised side of street art we thought it was a good opportunity to focus on the illegal roots of graffiti in Bristol. \nSince our inception in 2006\, PRSC has worked with all kinds of artists\, and seen many pieces illegally painted out with no justification or apology from the Council or Bristol Waste; we’ve seen the waste company make decisions about what should be kept and what should be buffed out\, and we’ve heard multiple stories of graffiti writers being stopped by the police when painting spots which officers from the same force have happily watched being painted many times before. Collectively we’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to convince the council that they should have some kind of policy to provide any kind of clarity\, but to no avail. \nSo\, what’s it actually like to paint on the streets of Bristol? With one hand the city provided its museum to Banksy (for what turned out to be their most successful exhibition ever) and with the other\, it harasses and criminalises his contemporaries\, upcoming artists and the very scene that spawned him. \nNo Great Crime: Bristol’s Arresting Art brings together a range of street artists and graff writers to show their diverse and inspiring work\, to tell their stories and to kickstart a conversation about how this city treats people engaged in its most famous art form. Some striking and beautiful pieces of Bristol street art\, including some from the PRSC’s own archives\, will be displayed alongside testimonials from local street artists about the realities of painting the Bristol streets\, and their brushes with the law. \nFeaturing art and stories from gHOSTbOY\, John D’oh\, Oshii\, Mike22\, Ryder\, Sepr\, Sickboy\, Skank\, T-Rex\, Tom Miller and more.

SUMMARY:Invented Futures: Speculation\, Visionaries and Modern Mythologies
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nJoin Invented Futures to revisit the ways speculative thinking\, experimental writing\, manifestos\, magazines\, essays\, online forums\, fictions and modern mythologies have created\, transformed and rendered new futures\, formerly impossible technologies\, counter-cultural tech utopias and\, ultimately\, our dominant culture. \nThroughout the history of emerging tech\, as well as the reflections on how we live alongside it\, there’s been slippages between fiction and reality. From Ada Lovelace\, to Ted Nelson and Stewart Brand\, through to Donna Haraway\, Octavia Butler\, William Gibson and Marshall McLuhan\, our technological future has been collectively divined and metabolised by visionary thinkers. \nThe space between the early 1960s to the 1990s saw computers transform in our collective imagination from dehumanising machines of control into tools for a new shared digital utopia. But what instruments of speculation do we have now? And if the medium is still the message\, where does that leave our own capacity to continue to invent futures? \nInvented Futures is a collective that tears apart the narratives that fuel the development of new technology. We take a look at how tech innovation has got to where it is by examining how the role of speculative thinking can show us how there are alternatives to given tech cultures – through fictions\, design\, philosophies\, experimental AI systems and human-computer interactions that can uncover ‘possible worlds’. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds!\n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Tech Manifesto Writing Workshop for Young People
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nWE REGET TO INFORM YOU THAT DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.\nThe Invented Futures tall at 1.15pm today is still going ahead. See here: http://hdfst.uk/E63940 \nA creative workshop for young people that explores the use of manifestos\, experimental writing and political action to transform society’s relationship with technology. \nAt the moment\, there’s a feeling of distrust in big tech\, which creates an opportunity for young people to rewrite the rules. The manifesto has been used as a political tool throughout major turning points in the history of collective action. Political parties from all factions\, of course\, use them as a way of setting out policies. But manifestos have also been used by art movements and citizens alike to demonstrate against dominant systems. \nUsing famous examples through history\, from A Cyborg Manifesto to the writings of tech workers globally\, we’ll explore how artists\, writers\, activists and citizens have taken the future into their own hands by making demands on technology and society through creative practice. \nThen\, we’ll ask what questions you want to channel into your own tech manifesto: Why is discrimination embedded within data and automation? How can we take back the tech in our pockets? What is your view on social media and socialising? Do you think about the impact of increasing surveillance? \nAll you need is a pen and paper! \nInvented Futures is a collective that tears apart the narratives that fuel the development of new technology. We take a look at how tech innovation has got to where it is by speculating about alternatives to given tech cultures – through fictions\, design\, philosophies\, experimental AI systems and human-computer interactions that can uncover ‘possible worlds’. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Digital Witness: An introduction to Storytelling and Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nDigital Witness has been running digital storytelling workshops for 5 years working with a variety of agencies and organisations. In this workshop they aim to give an outline to the process of how they deliver the workshops and share some of the experiences and skills they have gained over time. \nThey will introduce and demonstrate the Seven Steps of Digital Storytelling – the building blocks of the technique. They will then present a few digital stories from around the world and facilitate a discussion about where and how these stories have been used for advocacy\, including local environmental campaigns\, issues around gender based violence and patients rights among others. They hope this discussion can lead to exploring new and innovative ways this technique can be used in your practice and future projects and campaigns. \nWhat is a digital story?\nDigital stories are brief first person videos created by combining age-old storytelling narrative practice with modern-day technology and digital media. Digital storytelling is different from the art of making short films in several key ways. \nFirst\, digital stories are typically produced in small\, intensive workshops\, where trained facilitators put much emphasis on story development and sharing. Storytellers are encouraged to put their stories ahead of the technology\, and a primary aim of the process is to show people the transformative effects of giving voice to their own challenges\, triumphs\, opinions\, and struggles. \nSecond\, digital storytelling puts the tools of production directly into the hands of the storyteller\, who is trained to use free or inexpensive digital editing tools to craft a video from her/his own materials\, including the recorded narrative and important personal photographs. \nFinally\, digital storytellers are encouraged to use their stories\, both to start conversations with friends\, coworkers and family\, and in more formal efforts at community building\, education\, program documentation\, and advocacy. \nHow is digital storytelling used in community projects?\n\nFor community digital storytelling facilitators\, these stories are useful both as a process and a product. As a process\, creating a digital story can build skills in reflection and critical thinking\, oral\, written\, and visual storytelling\, and multimedia production. As a product\, you can use a digital story for outreach and organising\, fundraising\, documentation and reflection. \nWhy is digital storytelling effective as a tool?\n\nThroughout history\, story has been used to teach\, to entertain\, to express\, to advocate\, and to organise. It is through the sharing of stories that communities build their identities\, pass on traditions\, and construct meaning. Community building efforts use story to remember the past\, to understand the present\, and to imagine the future. \nStories build community:\nBoth internally and externally\, stories can connect individuals to others who share their experiences and generate the ability of individuals and organisations to act. One goal of community building is to become part of someone else’s story\, to have their story become part of you. It is through the act of telling that we realise that our stories are interconnected with others. \nStories can create the conditions for change:\nWhen we build relationships through storytelling\, the process often encourages individuals to think differently about themselves and about their capacity to act both individually and collectively. We tell stories as evidence of our work to galvanize energy\, to raise funds\, and to educate. SUMMARY:Philosophy For Children
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nPhilosophy\, the “love of wisdom\,” begins with wonder about the world. It is one of the oldest academic disciplines\, but traditionally it has not been considered a subject for children. Yet young people ask philosophical questions and are curious about philosophical issues: How do we know things? What is beauty? How are the mind and body connected? \nYoung people do not need to learn philosophy; it is something they do. \nThe second in a series of workshops to provide young children the opportunity to engage in philosophical discussion\, develop their ability to think and reason with others\, foster independent learning. \nWe will cover a range of stimulating philosophical questions about fairness\, the environment\, friendship\, inclusion\, sharing\, right and wrong\, manners\, beauty\, pictures\, the emotions\, dreaming and reality and more. \nThis is a project which uses teaching resources developed in Seattle. SUMMARY:Rebel History: The Struggle to Reclaim Our Past
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nJoin poet Lawrence Hoo\, mentorist Michael Barnes-Wynters\, author Mike Manson and publisher Richard Jones in a discussion around what history we choose to tell and who gets to tell it.   \nWhat do you know about British history? Is it just a dusty list of kings and queens? A study of corn laws\, industrial revolution and empire\, with the occasional plague thrown in for variety? As we all know\, history is written by the winners so the history of rebellion\, civil disobedience and protest only ever gets a mention in the text books when a movement is so successful that it changes the cultural paradigm. \nThere is another history. One which shares stories from the powerless\, the excluded\, and those who fought injustice and got beaten down. This history is collected and shared by those who are passionate about our cultural memory and who refuse to allow history’s winners to be sole guardians of our story of the past. \nWhen Colston toppled into the water last summer\, this was a single decisive act in an ongoing public battle over our city’s history\, The protesters were demanding that we reconsider which people the city celebrates and who’s stories we tell. This is part of a deeper question about how Bristol – which prides itself on diversity and cultural expression – faces up to the brutalities of our past. Only time will tell how history will record Colston’s swim in the harbour\, as a natural step towards a more inclusive representation of Bristol’s past or as a moment of vandalism by a rowdy mob\, but we all have a part to play in choosing the stories that are told and remembered within our culture. \nLocal organisations such as Cargo and the Bristol Radical History Group dedicate themselves to ensuring that the history of struggle for social justice and equality is remembered and that\, as a culture we don’t hide from the darker stories of our past. \n\n7pm – screening of a 10 minute film called ‘Battling for Bristol’ by Colin Thomas of the Bristol Radical History Group – following 150 years of protest movements in the city\n7.15pm – 30 min talk on the story of the Bristol Bridge Riot of 1793 from Richard Jones of Tangent Books and Mike Manson author of the book Riot\n7.45pm – 30 min talk from poet Lawrence Hoo about his latest project Cargo Movement\, why it exists\, what it is trying to do\, and why reclaiming history is so important\n8.15pm – 15 min break (for the smokers\, tea addicts & those with weak bladders)\n8.30pm – 30 min talk from Michael Barnes-Wynters about his cultural history project Dutty Lingo and how it was inspired by the riots that followed Mark Duggan’s death in 2011\n9-9.30pm – Q&A session / round table discussion on the importance of representation and remembering our past. This discussion will kick off with the question What did it mean when Colston’ statue hit the water?\n\nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds! \nFeatured image is a photo of an installation by street photographer Colin Moody which featured at the People’s Art Fair in September 2020. \n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\n\n\n\nSchool of Chativism\n\nIf you're feeling hyped about all this educating\, and you wanna connect with other SoA students to talk about what you've learnt\, and/or discuss the future of ethical social media\, then this is for you... \n\n"The School of Chativism is an experimental social media space that will run for the duration of the School of Activism 2.0. SUMMARY:Sleeping Rough - Screening with Q&A
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nReal Stories of Street Homelessness \nSleeping Rough is a community-based docudrama about street homelessness. Using real interviews conducted with members of the homeless community all around the UK\, the film follows three characters and the circumstances that force each of them to sleep on the street. Produced in collaboration with The Big Issue Foundation and Cardboard Citizens\, shot on location and with actors with personal experience of homelessness\, Sleeping Rough encourages understanding of the issues that affect those experiencing homelessness. \nThis film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with film maker and homelessness campaigner Owain Astles. \n‘Sleeping Rough’ follows three characters\, each on their journey to street homelessness: \n Jack is an engineer who\, through a chain of events\, loses his job\, his flat\, and his family.\nCatherine is a young woman who moves straight out of care into a flat with her boyfriend\, however it soon becomes clear that the relationship is emotionally abusive\, and with no-one to turn to\, she escapes onto the streets.\nEva is an immigrant who\, to avoid being deported\, accepts a job where she is underpaid\, overworked and exploited. Soon\, she too decides to escape. \nAll the events in the film have been described to us by people with lived experience of street homelessness\, and everything that takes place has happened to someone; it’s real. While the events follow a script\, all the dialogue is improvised\, and was established through a series of rehearsals between Owain Astles\, the film’s director\, and the film’s cast\, most of whom have experience of homelessness themselves. Many of the scenes in the film were shot on location\, in shelters and soup kitchens\, and on the streets of London and Bristol. \n \nTwitter: @sleeproughfilm // Facebook: @sleepingroughfilm // Instagram: @pastlespro / #SleepingRoughFilm \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Know Your Rights: A Guide to Homeless Services in Bristol
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nOur regular Tuesday afternoon Street Survival drop-in session for rough sleepers is being taken over for the School of Activism 2.0. \nSince September 2018 the PRSC has been distributing sleep pods\, blankets\, tents and sleeping bags to rough sleepers in Stokes Croft\, and we are often faced with simple questions we can’t answer – where can I get a shower? How does the council decide who to house? Where am I allowed to pitch a tent? \nThe murky world of homelessness services can be hard enough to navigate at the best of times\, and that’s not usually when people need them. With a spike in homelessness predicted at the end of both the furlough scheme and the moratorium on evictions\, the questions of where people are and aren’t allowed to sleep\, and what services are available to them have become ever more urgent. \nStep forward Richard Drake of the Bristol Homeless Forum\, who will use this session to offer a personal view on services available pre-COVID\, what’s changed during COVID and how it might change coming out. \nRichard Drake first got involved with homelessness in Bristol as a volunteer with Caring at Christmas nearly 20 years ago and is currently a volunteer and trustee with the Julian Trust\, a trustee with Housing Justice and helps to run the Bristol Homeless Forum. \nTickets available now from Headfirst.
