SUMMARY:EVENT - Things We Do Not Know - 7 June 2017
DESCRIPTION:BEAR PIT OPEN AIR THEATRE – Back for one day only!\n“A slut is a slut\, all this bullshit about choice.”\nThings We Do Not Know is an exploration of female street sex workers in Bristol. \nCome and celebrate the first performance in the Bearpit Open Air Theatre! \nUsing verbatim theatre and music\, this hour-long production asks how these women end up having to sell themselves for sex. It explores how society views them\, and how they can get help. The piece began development last year in collaboration with Bristol-based charity One25 and with help from Spotlights we have been able to revive the show. This revival has been edited and updated. The charity works to help get the women clean\, safe and off the streets. \nThere will be a donations bucket at the end of the performances to raise money for One25. (http://one25.org.uk/).\nVenue: Bearpit Open Air Theatre\, St. James Barton Roundabout\, Bristol BS1 3LY \nDates: 7th June at 3:00pm and 6:30pm. \n“This piece was a creative\, brave and fantastically directed testament to the Bristol based charity One25 which helps street sex workers break free from their traumatic and dangerous lives.” Intermission\nhttp://www.intermissionbristol.co.uk/…/things-we-do-not-know\n“It never sought to shock or relish in a perpetuated sense of tragedy\, nor did it sensationalize the idea of “sex” in sex-work… it just wanted to be honest.” ***** Epigram\nhttp://epigram.org.uk/arts/2016/03/review-things-not-know

SUMMARY:Philosophy For Children
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nPhilosophy\, the “love of wisdom\,” begins with wonder about the world. It is one of the oldest academic disciplines\, but traditionally it has not been considered a subject for children. Yet young people ask philosophical questions and are curious about philosophical issues: How do we know things? What is beauty? How are the mind and body connected? \nYoung people do not need to learn philosophy; it is something they do. \nThe first in a  series of workshops to provide young children the opportunity to engage in philosophical discussion\, develop their ability to think and reason with others\, foster independent learning. \nWe will cover a range of stimulating philosophical questions about fairness\, the environment\, friendship\, inclusion\, sharing\, right and wrong\, manners\, beauty\, pictures\, the emotions\, dreaming and reality and more. \nThis is a project which uses teaching resources developed in Seattle. See more about the project here https://vimeo.com/136588083 \nWorkshops are delivered by a SAPERE P4C facilitator \nNB:\nSuitable for children from the age of three upwards.\nThese sessions are for Children only – no parents allowed!\nParticipants will be required to keep their “Camera On” at all times.\nBefore the session PRSC will seek consent from parents / guardians to record the workshop to share in a digital archive\, but this is entirely optional and won’t affect your right to attend the session. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds! \n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\n\n\n\nSchool of Chativism\n\nIf you're feeling hyped about all this educating\, and you wanna connect with other SoA students to talk about what you've learnt\, and/or discuss the future of ethical social media\, then this is for you... \n\n"The School of Chativism is an experimental social media space that will run for the duration of the School of Activism 2.0. SUMMARY:'Class Power on Zero-Hours’ book presentation by Angry Workers
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nJoin Angry Workers\, a small political collective from London\, to talk about finding new ways of building class power in tough times. What next for working class politics and revolutionary strategy? \n“We will talk about the large logistical and industrial backyard of the metropolis. About the reasons we moved there to get rooted. We will talk about slow-downs and overtime strikes in warehouses and frustrations at factory gates at five in the morning. About our workmates from Katowice and Jalandhar. About the impact of Brexit and zero-hour contracts. \nWe will share our experiences with our solidarity network\, an IWW organising drive and campaigns to stop local libraries from closing. We will talk about being union reps in two big unions and the limits we found. \nWe will make proposals about working class strategy and revolution. \nWe will also discuss our organising experiences in relation to the current attacks: the increase in legal repression (‘Kill the Bill’\, police repression in Italy and Greece) and the widespread ‘fire and rehire’ tactics to cut jobs and wages. These are two aspects of the same attack.” \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Know Your Rights: Dealing with Police at Protests
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nDealing with the police can be intimidating. They are the hired thugs of the rich\, always standing in the way of the struggle for a better world. Their job is to prevent any meaningful\, lasting radical change. Brought to you by Bristol Defendant Solidarity this session will deal with knowing your “rights”\, knowing your enemy\, staying confident and sticking together when faced with police bullying\, hassle or attacks. We hope to share experience and knowledge and learn lessons to increase confidence and solidarity when we come up against the police. An understanding of the laws they use against us and how the police work can go a long way to avoiding trouble and arrest. \nBristol Defendant Solidarity aims to help with that! Bristol Defendant Solidarity is an independent group run by local volunteers\, formed after the Stokes Croft riots in April 2011. We aim to provide effective\, lasting unconditional support and solidarity to anyone arrested or imprisoned as a result of demos\, riots\, direct action and escalating class war. We also stand in solidarity with all people facing harassment from the state – whether that is a “random” Stop and Search on the street\, or dawn raid as part of their investigations into “subversive” groups. We take a clear stand against state repression and police brutality. \nSolidarity is our best defence.\nFor more info about the work of BDS see https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/defendant-solidarity/ \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds!\n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:Video and Activism
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nFilms and discussion from the activist video creation project at Base. \nBase is a self-organised space in Easton (formerly knows as Kebele). Among other projects it is home to a group of activists who are currently busy turning activist leaflets and zines into videos that can be shared and accessed by a much wider audience. \nThis hour long session will feature two short videos from the team\, followed by Q&As. \n5pm Video As Communicative Tool For Activism\n10 min video followed by Q&A \nSelf created video with informative or educational content can make activism and campaigning more effective\, yet the most used form of communication in self-organised spaces are leaflets\, zines and posters. Much of that messaging – with anything as short as a zine – can be done using video. \nThe effort to create a video is about the same as creating leaflets and zines. The text on a leaflet or zine can be voiced\, accompanied by imagery that assists the spoken text. The physical set up is complete with a camera\, a device that can record voice and a device that can download and run a basic video editor. \nThis short film will share the aims and practices of the video creation project and an invitation to come and join in. \n5.30 Self-organized Spaces And The Example Base Social Center Bristol\n10 min video followed by Q&A \nBASE is run on a number of core principles\, which reflect the sort of world BASE members want to see and help bring into reality. It is these principles which make BASE a radical social centre. Instead of waiting for that ever far away big moment of revolution\, or for leaders and authorities to sort out our problems\, we recognise that we can make fundamental changes here and now\, in the ways we organise\, communicate\, interact and take action. This is the everyday revolution. BASE aims to be a living example\, albeit on a small scale\, of other possibilities. \nThis short film will share the experiences of working in a self-organised space and will be followed by a Q&A discussion after. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. This is the place to discuss and share events at SOA2. But it's also a space for questioning what social media currently is\, and what it could be\, for activists and activism. SUMMARY:Who Owns the Land?
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nLand ownership in the UK reflects the huge inequalities in the country\, with a 2019 survey revealing that half of England is owned by 1% of the population. \nIn urban centres this inequality is leading to rising numbers of homeless people and an increasingly precarious situation for ‘generation rent’\, even as the landlords see ever increasing profits as house prices continue to rise. \nIn rural areas\, unequal land ownership means that most of our countryside is hidden behind fences\, remote and invisible for the vast majority of the population\, with only 8% of the countryside and 3% of rivers available to the public. \nThis problem is huge and its history long\, but this is not a reason to be disheartened. The battle for land and housing rights is a fundamental one that can impact on almost all other struggles – from improving physical and mental health to reducing inequality or lessening our environmental impact. And it is a particularly urgent fight now with the Tory government following on from their 2011 criminalisation of squatting by promising to introduce a bill which will criminalise trespass\, thus removing all of the non-criminal ways that the population had available to informally redress this shocking imbalance (until the criminalisation of squatting it was understood in our common customs that those who did not own any land had the right to make use of land owned by others). \nIn this session\, two veterans of the struggle for land equality present the two very different approaches they have taken to finding solutions to some of these issues. \nAuthor and artist Nick Hayes is a campaigner for the Right to Roam\, which campaigns to extend the Countryside & Rights of Way (CRoW) Act in England so that millions more people can have easy access to open space\, and the physical\, mental and spiritual health benefits that it brings. His latest book The Book of Trespass is an impassioned call for greater access to the countryside. Weaving together the stories of poachers\, vagabonds\, gypsies\, witches\, hippies\, ravers\, ramblers\, migrants and protestors\, and charting acts of civil disobedience that challenge orthodox power at its heart\, The Book of Trespass shines a light on the deep injustices of land ownership and access in the UK\, and paints a picture of the fairer\, healthier society we could build if we tackle these problems head on. \nLand and housing activist (and one of the directors of the PRSC) Keith Cowling is one of the driving forces behind the Bristol Community Land Trust\, a Community Benefit Society owned by and run on behalf of its members\, with the remit to provide affordable and sustainable housing in the city. As their website states: “Our purpose is to enable people\, many of whom have little access to the traditional housing market\, to realise their vision of building sustainable homes and creating inclusive communities”. Keith has also helped to set up the Stokes Croft Land Trust\, which hopes to purchase property in Stokes Croft (starting with the PRSC HQ building) to hold as community assets outside of the pressures of the commercial property market in perpetuity\, so the local people will always have affordable\, accessible community resources in their neighbourhood. \nIf you are sick of the inequality and lack of access that the UK’s approach to land ownership supports\, if you feel inspired to become a campaigner for land justice\, or if you just want to know more then don’t miss this session. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds! \n(photographs from UK squatting sites by Lisa Furness)\n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:Know Your Rights: A Guide to Squatting in Bristol
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nOur regular Tuesday afternoon Street Survival drop-in session for rough sleepers is being taken over for the School of Activism 2.0. \nWhere can you find a place to sleep? What are your rights when it comes to squatting non residential buildings? \nUnder Section 144 of the Legal Aid\, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012\, squatting in a residential property became a criminal offence on 1 September 2012. Squatting in non-residential property may be a civil or a criminal matter\, depending upon the circumstances\, and repossession by the owners\, occupiers or intended occupiers may require legal process or police action. \nBut what does that mean? Are people being prosecuted under section 144? How do we define a residential property? \nWith the numbers of rough sleepers in Bristol rising steadily\, the questions of where people are and aren’t allowed to sleep\, and what to do if you find a good place\, have become ever more urgent. \nFrom 2-4pm on Tuesday April 6th members of the Bristol Housing Action Movement will be sharing their insights into the complicated question of squatting – Due to covid restrictions this session will be run as a zoom presentation. SUMMARY:Know Your Rights: Vehicle Dwelling and the Law
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nVehicle dwelling has been considered a part of Bristol’s diverse culture for a while. It has also been suggested in the media that there has been an increase in “vehicle dwelling” in recent years. While this is largely unknowable\, one thing we do know for certain is that new enforcement measures have been rolled out in response to this. \nBristol City Council attempted to take out a “Possession Order” and “Injunction” in a significant part of the city last summer. This would have effectively banned all people from living in vehicles in the area. We are also anticipating new “anti-trespass” legislation at a national level\, which could further impact the freedom of movement of everyone\, especially those living in vehicles. \nIt is important that all vehicle dwellers – or any others interested – are aware of these local and national policies\, as well as the actions being taken to manage and contest these policies. \nTwo representatives from Bristol Vehicles for Change (VfC) will outline the basic mechanics of these new policies. We will explain how vehicle dwellers have come together to contest enforcement in Bristol\, and how we may move forward in this context. \nVfC is an organisation formed to protect and advance the rights and place of vehicle dwellers in Bristol. For more info visit www.bristolvehiclesforchange.co.uk \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Philosophy for Children in Bristol? Planning Meeting for Families & Educators
Yet young people ask philosophical questions and are curious about philosophical issues: \nHow do we know things? What is beauty? How are the mind and body connected?\nYoung people do not need to learn philosophy; it is something they do. \nPhilosophy For Children is a project developed in Seattle. It offers a series of workshops to introduce philosophy to young children from the age of three upwards. \nThe School of Activism is hosting two taster sessions of Philosophy for Children\, and you are invited to a meeting to discuss how this course could be rolled out as an ongoing programme in Bristol. If you would like to get involved\, help us\, or are just curious\, join our online planning meeting. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. Tickets to this session are free\, but any donations will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible. \n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:Art for Social Change
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nWhen done well\, art can give voice to the voiceless and bring visibility to those that are hidden. Art is a powerful tool to change the world. \nPhotographers Anthony Luvera and Rory Carnegie have both created fascinating collaborative projects in partnership with rough sleepers. \nIn his project Assembly Anthony Luvera invited people experiencing homelessness to use disposable cameras and audio recorders to document their experiences and things they are interested in. Anthony also worked with participants to create Assisted Self-Portraits in places significant to the individual. \nHis exhibition Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) was exhibited at the PRSC last winter. It featured questions about homeless provision sent to hundreds of councils across the UK and responses received from the councils. This exhibition was made in partnership with the Museum of Homelessness and FAQ was previously shown at Tate Liverpool. \nImages from FAQ exhibition & workshops at PRSC November 2019 \nFor his project ICON\, Rory Carnegie teamed up with the charity Crisis\, and arts centre The Old Fire Station in Oxford to reproduce iconic British photographs with homeless people as models. PRSC is working with Rory & the Old Fire Station to bring the ICON exhibition to Bristol. \nIn 2002 Rory worked with young asylum seekers in Oxford\, helping them to produce images & text exploring their experiences and exhibiting the results in the entrance space at Modern Art Oxford. \nHomeless people recreate a classic Beatles image for Rory’s ICON project \nIn this evening\, Rory and Anthony will present these projects\, discuss the experiences they had making this work and share the principles and priorities which led to them creating such important work. \nThis talk will look at the way that artists can choose to empower or diminish their subjects\, the way that power relationships between artist and subject can either reinforce or challenge current inequalities\, and at the responsibility that artists have to consider the impact of their work in the wider social context. This is the place to discuss and share events at SOA2. But it's also a space for questioning what social media currently is\, and what it could be\, for activists and activism. We can remake it as we go\, transform it throughout SOA2.“ \n\nJoin the conversation »

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Influencers: The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly - Discussion
DESCRIPTION:** This event has been cancelled ** \n*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nA round table discussion on how influencers influence our culture – looking at the pros & cons of a world in which social and cultural influence is formalised and commercialised. \nWith your phone in your hand you can browse Instagram and other social media and see people like you living a life that may come with the hashtag #ad or #gifted. What is this world? Where did it come from and where is it going? \nThis open debate will feature influencers\, psychologists and others and presents a chance to look at what is working\, who it’s working for\, and where we all might be heading. \nWe’ve all had a chance to live in a different world for a year now so let’s debate what we now see and feel about social media influence and influencers\, their role going forward\, and changes we can see or feel coming down the pipe to a bubble near you. \nThe discussion will be hosted by photographer and influencer Colin Moody and topics covered will include: \n1 – Mental Health\n2 – Tiers of Influence (the likes heirarchy)\n3 – Social Bubbles (who ar we talking to?)\n4 – True Voice vs Sponsored Content (and when the line blurs)\n5 – Culture vs PR \nThe Panel:\nColin Moody – Street photographer\, community activist and influencer\nAlan Bec – psychologist\, cultural commentator\, mentor and business owner\nCharlie Harding – Social media manager and former food blogger\nMelissa Chemam – Writer and freelance journalist \n“From a social psychological perspective\, there are three elements to being influenced and being influential – Authority\, Power & Control. Grasping the significance of these elements as behaviours can and will change your world. I can’t wait to refer to these as a structure throughout our round table discussion\, so you can know when you are being influenced and enact your influence for social good”. Alan Bec of Balance Consulting Bristol. \nThis will be a zoom event\, but if we are allowed into the venue we will invite a live audience to enjoy the debate together (all covid guidelines will be followed). \nTickets available now from Headfirst. DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\n** This event has been cancelled ** \nA classic story reading session for children – across two mornings Lisa and Sue will be reading a story of social justice or rebellion to fire the imagination. After the reading there will be a creative challenge – drawing your favourite character or writing what will happen next. \nThis activity is suitable for children aged 8-12 (younger kids are welcome if they bring their adults with them!).\nParticipants will be welcome to drop in and out of this session\, but we recommend starting at 11am to make sure you catch the beginning of the story. \nLisa and Sue are still investigating our story options\, but the stories will be announced before the workshop. \nThe session will roughly follow these timings:\n★ 11-11.40am – story reading 1\n★ 11.40am-12 – creative challenge!\n★ 12-12.40 – story reading 2\n★ 12.40-1pm – creative challenge \nThe activities require some materials that are commonly found at home:\n★ Mask making kit: card (around the size of a cereal box would be perfect)\, colouring pens or paint\, scissors\, string\n★ Picture making kit: paper of any size (the bigger the better but A4 is fine)\, coloured pencils or pens or paint\n★ Collage creation: a sheet of paper or card\, some old magazines\, flyers or junk mail\, glue stick or other easy glue\, a pair of scissors \nTickets available now from Headfirst. This is the place to discuss and share events at SOA2. But it's also a space for questioning what social media currently is\, and what it could be\, for activists and activism. We can remake it as we go\, transform it throughout SOA2.“ \n\nJoin the conversation »
