SUMMARY:Spotlights New Writing Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nPerformance dates: Tuesday 29 March\, Thursday 31 March and Saturday 2 April.\n7.30pm doors & bar open\, 8pm start. \nVISIONARY… 12 writers. 10 plays. 3 nights. It’s gonna be WILD. We’re talking secret societies\, magical realism\, alternate metaverses\, camping trips – you name it\, these writers have visioned it. \nAnd not only that\, but we’re also going to be performing at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft – a fabulous and versatile venue with ENDLESS staging possibilities. \nTalking of staging\, we have one night ‘In the Round’\, one night ‘In Traverse’ and another night also in traverse but… wait for it… with projections! Ooooohhhh. (The second night will also be staged as a relaxed performance – more info on that below). \nDATES and PERFORMANCES\nTuesday 29th March\nBetwixt – by Marine Saint and Sophia Woolfenden\nThe Waiting Room – by Lola Annesley\nWhen The Rain Hit London – by Jess Millson \nThursday 31st March (Relaxed Performance)\nGoblin Garden – by Han Morgan\nA Working Title – by Patrick Coghlan\nBrilliant\, F****** Brilliant – by Rosalie Roger-Lacan \nSaturday 2nd April\nA Dash of Lavender – by Mia Stevens\nA Climate Tragedy – by Stavros Gidopoulos\nSecret Society (shhh\, it’s a secret) – by Anna Sharp and Morgan Davies\nBetawurs – by Ella Mapes \nTickets are sold individually for each night\, so if you’re coming to watch a specific play/person\, make sure you get the ticket for that specific night. \nDoors will open at 7.30 with performance due to start at 8. The PRSC will have a bar open before the performance starts so it’s worth getting here earlier if you want to get drinks! \nMore notes on the relaxed performance: This just means that the houselights will remain on\, stage lighting changes slightly less harsh\, and no expectations for the audience to sit still throughout the performance. The quality or content of the pieces will not be affected AT ALL by this – it will just be a more relaxed environment for our audience members! \nThe venue is wheelchair accessible\, however\, unfortunately the toilets are not. \nClick here for content warnings for each piece\, should you like to have a glance at it before you buy your ticket.

SUMMARY:School of Activism 3.0
DESCRIPTION:We define activism as ‘Active Citizenship’.\nThe process of taking care of and taking part in your community.\nYou are not a victim of circumstance.\nSo change it. \nThe tools of transformation are already in your hands – and the School Of Activism is here to show you how you can start forging a new future. We’ll let you in on a badly kept secret: Activism is a doing word (although strictly speaking\, it’s a noun). We can change things\, we can make them better. And after all\, knowledge is power – so\, let’s share it. \nThe People’s Republic of Stokes Croft invites you to the School of Activism 3.0 this spring. Throughout April we’ll be running a series of workshops\, events and activities designed to empower and galvanise every age group. In doing so\, we can foster our own future – and make it something we’re all proud to be a part of. \nView the SOA 3.0 Curriculum \nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment. Your donations make it possible for us to offer solidarity pricing\, with no-one turned away through lack of funds\, ensuring our events are available to all. \nDonate to support SOA 3.0 \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. Running at PRSC during April 2022\, the events are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment\, so we offer pay-what-you-can solidarity pricing with no-one turned away through lack of funds. Please donate to help us keep the School of Activism affordable to all!

SUMMARY:EVENT - Things We Do Not Know - 7 June 2017
DESCRIPTION:BEAR PIT OPEN AIR THEATRE – Back for one day only!\n“A slut is a slut\, all this bullshit about choice.”\nThings We Do Not Know is an exploration of female street sex workers in Bristol. \nCome and celebrate the first performance in the Bearpit Open Air Theatre! \nUsing verbatim theatre and music\, this hour-long production asks how these women end up having to sell themselves for sex. It explores how society views them\, and how they can get help. The piece began development last year in collaboration with Bristol-based charity One25 and with help from Spotlights we have been able to revive the show. This revival has been edited and updated. The charity works to help get the women clean\, safe and off the streets. \nThere will be a donations bucket at the end of the performances to raise money for One25. (http://one25.org.uk/).\nVenue: Bearpit Open Air Theatre\, St. James Barton Roundabout\, Bristol BS1 3LY \nDates: 7th June at 3:00pm and 6:30pm. \n“This piece was a creative\, brave and fantastically directed testament to the Bristol based charity One25 which helps street sex workers break free from their traumatic and dangerous lives.” Intermission\nhttp://www.intermissionbristol.co.uk/…/things-we-do-not-know\n“It never sought to shock or relish in a perpetuated sense of tragedy\, nor did it sensationalize the idea of “sex” in sex-work… it just wanted to be honest.” ***** Epigram\nhttp://epigram.org.uk/arts/2016/03/review-things-not-know

SUMMARY:The People's Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe core principles of the People’s Art Fair are that all creative practice deserves a platform from which to shine; that together we are greater than the sum of our parts; that the barriers between us as people and as communities need to be pulled down; and that a healthy and active culture leads to a healthy society and that coming together in a spirit of creativity and playfulness can be one of the most rewarding things we can do. \nSo in the true spirit of the People’s Art Fair we are delighted to welcome the Suspicious Jazz Roll Ups back to our beautiful venue this December for the second edition of the People’s Jam Session\, a music jam session open to all. \nCome along\, bring voices and instruments\, have a boogie and show us your skills! \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. SUMMARY:The Fall of Colston - the Strategies of the Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe fall of the Colston statue on 7th June 2020 can be seen as the culmination of 100yrs of campaigning against his city centre presence\, which had intensified in the last decade\, and intersected on that famous day. Whilst many individuals & institutions suddenly rushed to disown him\, and the impact of the toppling rippled much further away than just in Bristol\, that wasn’t the end of it! Tory ministers\, right-wing media\, Labour politicians\, the CPS and the police launched a campaign of persecution – and those persecuted needed solidarity and support. \nSpeakers from Countering Colston\, Bristol Radical History Group and legal support reflect on the campaigns that resulted in the fall of Colston\, and the acquittal of the defendants. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:Poster Making with Careful Now! Collective
DESCRIPTION:TicketsPosters have a venerable history as the crossroads of art and politics\, creating understanding and solidarity. It was then: Paris in ’68\, the Vietnam War\, it is now: Occupy\, Extinction Rebellion. \nCareful Now! Collective are creating a space to practice with basic artistic techniques to help keep the art of DIY poster-making alive. There’ll be some pre-made stencils ready to use\, but you’ll be learning to make your own with two techniques – ‘negative’ stencil cuts and lino\, which combine beautifully. You’ll also get tips for how to do this at home with basic DIY equipment. \nOur workshops are pay-what-you-can – we recommend £4 but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book your timeslot (14:00\, 15:00 or 16:00) in advance or drop in and pay on the door if there are spaces left. \nUse our materials\, share some knowledge if you want (each one\, teach one)\, make a poster with us. SUMMARY:Theory of Change
DESCRIPTION:TicketsA workshop from the Ella Baker School of Organising… \nEveryone wants to make change\, whether it is to reduce loneliness\, end racism\, save the planet\, get the landlord to do essential repairs\, or simply get a crossing installed on a busy street. Yet too often we put action before strategy. We use familiar tactics: starting a petition\, writing to an MP\, lobbying\, striking or marching\, without first analysing why the problem came into existence\, why those with the power to change it choose not to\, and how we can make those with power say ‘yes’ when they would rather say ‘no.’ Whether you are writing a funding bid for a charity\, organising a trade union\, rebelling against oppression\, or planning to save the planet\, you need a theory of change: what is it that we need to do to effect the change we want to see? \nRegister in advance for your ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:The 1970s Counterculture in the West Country: The story of the Bath Arts Workshop
DESCRIPTION:TicketsFrom the late 1960s through the 1970s the counterculture helped to make the West Country fizz with creative ideas and events. One of the most successful ventures\, locally and nationally\, was the Bath Arts Workshop. As a spin-off from London’s influential Arts Lab\, BAT was a loose collective of artists and community activists. To describe it as a community arts group\, however\, would be to under-explain its work. It was that and much more as it proliferated into festival organisation\, media production\, hosted national alternative technology events known as Comtek\, and challenged homelessness\, ecological destruction\, racism\, and the destruction of historic buildings. \nTangent Books have recently published Bath Arts Workshop: Counterculture in the 1970s\, on the history of the initiative launched in 1969. This event will be a rare opportunity to hear co-founder Phil Shepherd and other authors in conversation\, remembering\, celebrating\, and reflecting upon the Bath Arts Workshop’s relevance for the present day. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:'The Deep' Discussion Group with Bristol Utopian Book Collective
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe Deep by Rivers Solomon is a short novel about mer-people descended from pregnant enslaved Africans thrown overboard on the passage across the Atlantic\, whose existence is threatened again by prospectors looking for deep sea oil beds. The book\, and the mythology it is part of\, have inspired real life memorials to enslaved Africans who died at sea. We’ll be discussing how fiction can help us think about racial justice and climate justice\, and inspire us to action. \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book in advance or pay on the door. \nSome extra credit reading that will give you an idea of what you might expect\, both by Bristol Utopian Book Collective’s Sheryl M Medlicott…\n★ ‘It is time to challenge colonial ways of thinking wherever they are found within our culture’\n★ Literature and Activism: Octavia Butler\, farming and community \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:Solidarity is our Best Defence
DESCRIPTION:TicketsWith Bristol Defendant Solidarity\, Bristol ABC and Bristol Anti Repression Campaign. \nLocal anti repression groups have been working hard to ensure defendants and prisoners from the Bristol Kill the Bill demonstrations have all our support and solidarity. We have met the state’s quest for revenge and punishment with a determined alliance of groups joining efforts to counter the lies and spin of the police and media and to stand alongside the defendants and prisoners all the way. Effective solidarity with those facing the wrath of the authorities for fighting back against the violence and escalating powers of the police is a vital part of the wider struggle against the PCSC Bill and this ever more authoritarian government. \nIn this session we will give an overview of the solidarity work so far\, discuss the importance of anti repression organising and look at ways we can continue to resist together. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the day! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:New Tools\, Invented Futures: Care\, Work\, Technology
DESCRIPTION:TicketsJoin writer and producer Maria Leonard for an interactive workshop using co-creation\, creative writing and shared discussion on the plural trajectories for care\, work and technology. By centering the potential of imagination and the notion of ‘plural futures’\, you will go away with new tools and tactics needed to think about the way you want to live together with others in the future. \nTouching on the writing of diverse thinkers such as Arturo Escobar\, Ursula Le Guin\, to ideas and images of future forms of work\, community\, care and the technologies used to create them\, Invented Futures will take participants through a series of creative methods\, or “tools”\, for charting alternative trajectories\, ways of being together and the kinds of possible futures this can create in the face of uncertainty through four strands: \n★ Utopia as method: Governance Futures\n★ I do not dream of labour: Work Futures\n★ Robot Intimacy: Care Futures\n★ Entangled systems: Tech Futures \nBuilding on the research produced by the Invented Futures collective\, the session will introduce to the concepts of worlding and the commons\, organising practices\, emerging debates around living with technology and the urgent questions around living together. \nWe will challenge\, question and develop participants’ notion of what makes a future\, the kinds of people-led organising it takes to meet the demands of current future trajectories\, and the imaginative responses that we need going forward. \nBring along a pen\, your ideas and your imagination: imaginations are capacious and shifting\, big and restless: we can have everything we ask for\, everything we need. \nAbout Invented Futures \nMaria Leonard is a writer\, researcher and producer who has worked on the cultural aspects of\, separately\, the future and death. She is currently producer of Invented Futures\, facilitator at Theatre Deli\, and an associate artist at Spike Island\, as well as a poet. \nInvented Futures is a research collective which brings together artists\, writers\, researchers and technologists around the principles of speculative thinking to reframe dominant ideas about the future and its alternatives. We ask the following questions:\nWhat kind of knowledge\, systems and capabilities are required to imagine and build alternative futures?\nHow might speculation\, from thought experiments to fiction\, to performance and prototypes\, provoke dialogue and change? \nBased at Spike Island and with living labs throughout Europe\, the collective spans fiction writers\, researchers and organisations such as the Centre for Research in the Arts\, Humanities and Social Sciences at Cambridge\, the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies\, UCL Science and Technology\, Bristol Digital Futures Institute\, the Imagine Festival of Ideas and Politics\, and more. \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book in advance or pay on the door. \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft.
