SUMMARY:LIVE IN DA HIVE presents: The Improv Gauntlet
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nThe Improv Gauntlet has returned for its third instalment! Four teams will take to the stage on April 18th\, but only one can be crowned champion. To take the crown\, the performers must first appease Queen Rhiannon of the North\, our iron-fisted ruler.\nStill\, there’s a twist! Your host\, The Adequate Showman\, Kieron S Edwards\, has his own life on the line. If the spectacular event that he has put on to appease the Queen does not satisfy\, then Jenkins will be imprisoned for the rest of his life. Who will be crowned? Will it be I Know What I Saw\, G.O.D.S\, After the Interval\, The Adorable Spies \nAny one of these troupes could be crowned the Champion of the Gauntlet! The winners will join the reigning champions\, Pressure Cooker and Beansville\, on the Queens Royal Council. Secure your tickets today! \nWho wins? You decide! \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

SUMMARY:Radical Social Work - learning from Vital Signs
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Tickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nRadical social work is a rich tradition but too often it is only accessible via academia. Instead we want to bring together those who work in social care\, have experience of it\, or just have an interest. Together we’ll consider topics such as the family\, motherhood\, care\, and injustice embedded in current systems. We’ll then ask how social care could be practiced in new\, truly emancipatory and radical ways. \nThis month we’ll be discussing Vital Signs magazine – a publication by and for health workers and patients – and asking what inspiration social workers & related professionals could draw from it. \nWe’ll be hearing from organisers about what Vital Signs is\, why it is important and why it needs to exist. We will discuss why trade union and workplace organising isn’t just important to improve the pay and conditions of workers but also defends services and is integral to radical social work practice. \n\nWhat to expect\nAfter a short introductory talk\, we will discuss the topic in small groups\, with some time to feed back to the whole room. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to get involved\, regardless of prior knowledge or whether you have attended before. \n\nAbout Bristol Transformed\nBristol Transformed is a grassroots\, volunteer-run\, socialist education group. Bringing together activists\, trade unionists\, and everyone who wants to learn\, we’re creating the space to discuss the most important issues facing us\, equipping us with the skills and knowledge to transform Bristol and the world. We run an annual festival of politics\, arts and culture in May\, and weekly events throughout the rest of the year. See all our events here. Bristol Transformed is run by dozens of local people. Without new people coming in every year\, we wouldn’t be able to maintain the same standard of political education events that you enjoy. If you’d be interested in joining us\, sign up as a BT volunteer today and we’ll be in touch!

SUMMARY:The Children of Mike
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nAn original play by Worms Theatre Company\, with an opening act by Pete the Temp. A story of the estranged human severed from ancient kinship. A collection of mischievous tales in which the more-than-human-world offers counsel to the lost human.\nThe story asks: Whose world is this? Do you own the pavement beneath your feet? Do you see the invisible faces on the street? We live in boxes and walk in lines. When was the last time you wept to the mountain or cursed the bog? \nThe human used to move with grace and humility. The human used to seek council and responsibility. What must we do to save our lonely souls\, to save our lonely soils\, to save our lonely rock? \nWorms Theatre Company seeks to affect social change through collective creativity. We are not-for-profit\, which means every penny wriggles straight back into our community initiatives — we have raised money for charitable causes (like £1500 for Planetary Repairs) and ran a two year program at Adventure Playground\, Felix Road offering weekly theatre and creative opportunities for young people. \nPete the Temp – poet\, comic and author\, whose work combines spoken word\, human-beatbox and experimental sound poetry. \nThere shall be badgers\, pigeons\, microbes\, religion. There shall be dancing and deities. \nOur previous productions:\nThe Banality of Evil ★★★★★ “Brilliantly written and performed” \nThe Last Vagabonds ★★★★★ “A generational satire like no other” \nEntry requirements: 16+

SUMMARY:Screening - Rue Cases-Nègres (Sugar Cane Alley) | 1983
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nThe June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive (JGPACA)\, in partnership with Afrika Eye and the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC)\, is thrilled to present a screening of Rue Cases-Nègres (1983) by Euzhan Palcy. This iconic work of Pan-African cinema is the first feature film directed by a Black woman in France and won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival\, Best First Film at the César Awards (1984)\, and the Audience Award at the Pan African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) in 1985.\nSet in 1930s Martinique\, the film tells the story of José\, a bright young boy whose grandmother is determined to secure his education and future amid the harsh conditions of the sugarcane plantations. Through its powerful portrayal of life in Sugar Cane Alley\, the film captures the resilience and collective resistance of a community living under French colonial rule. \nPalcy has said about her work and its purpose that filmmaking is not just about storytelling but about connection and healing: “With my camera I don’t shoot\, I heal”. A belief that gives the film a tender resonance that can be felt throughout. \nThe screening is part of the JGPACA Fellowship: Curating with Pan-African Cinema Archives\, an eight-week programme in which participants have explored Pan-African film and archival practice through the Curate-It eight-step model. Fellows will critically engage with archival materials and film histories to shape a collaborative curatorial response. \nAfter the screening\, Dr June Givanni\, film curator and founder of JGPACA\, will lead a discussion on Palcy’s ground-breaking work and the continuing significance of Rue Cases Nègres in global cinema and archival practice. \nThis event forms part of Building Community Audiences for Pan-African Cinema in the Regions\, a year-long initiative across five UK cities\, supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund with National Lottery funding.

SUMMARY:A Watershed Moment for Black Filmmaking? An Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nThis JGPACA exhibition takes its inspiration from a season of fifteen films co-devised by June Givanni for the Watershed Media Centre in Bristol during December 1989 and January 1990. Entitled ‘Moving Images: Black Film-making into the Nineties’\, this series also included a day conference for schools on ‘the representation of Black people in British television’.\nAside from giving an insight into film programming in Bristol at the end of the 1980s and very early 90s\, it also serves as a timely reminder to contemporary audiences what it meant to be politically ‘Black’ in the 1980s and how new sources of funding from the British Film Institute and Channel Four had provided support for many independent Black filmmakers working within the various Film Workshop initiatives at the time. \nAlongside a materials display of posters\, publicity materials\, photographs and documents\, this exhibition presents a rotating film programme which includes excerpts of films from the Moving Images programme featuring the work of Ngozi Onwurah\, Reece Auguiste and Sister D. Elmina Davis. \nCurated by: benjin\, Damilola Lemomu and Phoebe Beckett Chingono (JGPACA team)

SUMMARY:Organising Against Imperialism at Home - with Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nIn the past two years\, across the world we have seen not only a huge outpouring of grief for the genocide in Gaza\, but many acts of organised resistance against it. Marches\, direct actions\, nationwide strikes\, and solidarity flotillas have shown that the vast majority of the planet is against genocide and western imperialism. But while heroic and inspiring\, these efforts have so far failed to compel our governments to act. In fact\, US & Zionist imperialism appears to be more emboldened than ever; after kidnapping the President of Venezuela\, and then making claims over Greenland\, they now have taken the horrific and devastating step of declaring all out war on Iran. \nIn this session\, we are going to explore the different ways of organising against imperialism\, and look at their strengths and weaknesses and examine why and where some have been successful\, while others less so. We are going to look at the structures in place that prevent effective organising and talk about the different tactics that have been used over the years to overcome them. \nIt is becoming more and more clear that appeals to the morality and good will of politicians does not work. Meaningful change can only come from creating mass politics\, engaging everyone in the struggle against imperialism and forcing our governments to act. \nJoin the session and help us organise to do it. \nWhat to expect \nA talk\, followed by a discussion with inputs welcome from all attendees. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \nAbout Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone  \nOver the last two years\, through a community boycott campaign\, BAFZ have been organising our city to stand in opposition to the genocide. They’ve done this through grassroots\, door-to-door organising; with hundreds of active volunteers and 6000 local supporters\, our city is now home to Europe’s largest grassroots boycott campaign.

SUMMARY:Althusser: Is education just capitalist ideology?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for people who will struggle to contribute this. \n\nDescription\nAlthusser was an influential French Marxist thinker whose theories about education are familiar to every undergraduate and A-level sociology student. \nCapitalism secures its own reproduction by means of both violence and ideology. The Repressive State Apparatus (police\, courts\, military) keeps workers in check with physical threats\, while the Ideological State Apparatus (schools\, religion\, media\, family\, sport) helps to disseminate ruling class ideas as common sense. \nAre we just reproducing capitalism in our classrooms? How far can we realistically go in challenging the dominant capitalist ideology? Is Althusser right that education is more dominant even than the media? Shouldn’t PE teachers really be seen as part of the Repressive State Apparatus? \nRecommended reading: “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” by Althusser: PDF version – Text version \n\nWhat to expect\nAfter a short introductory talk\, we will discuss the topic in small groups\, with some time to feed back to the whole room. Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees. We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of any prior knowledge! \nWe run an annual festival of politics\, arts and culture in May\, and weekly events throughout the rest of the year. See all our events here. \nBristol Transformed is run by dozens of local people. Without new people coming in every year\, we wouldn’t be able to maintain the same standard of political education events that you enjoy. If you’d be interested in joining us\, sign up as a BT volunteer today and we’ll be in touch!
