SUMMARY:Advocate!
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition curated by students on the intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol\nOpen 31st May – 1st June\, 11 am to 5 pm\nAdvocate! Arts to shine a light on invisible struggles and stigma in medicine. \nThis collection of artworks has been created and collated by Bristol Medical students who have taken a year away from their medical curriculum to study humanities. Advocate! aims to shine some light onto several aspects of wellbeing and medicine which are currently not well enough understood\, including: experiences of chronic pain and illness; stigma in medical practice; and the experiences of neurodiverse people in healthcare settings. \nThe exhibition aims to show and depict aspects of these subjects without judgement\, even (and especially) when it involves matters that can be difficult to bring up in every-day conversation because of associated stigma and ignorance. \nMedical practitioners have a vital role to play in advocating for and empowering patients\, but may themselves share in the general culture’s ignorance and habits of stigmatisation. \nThe arts can raise awareness\, and so understanding\, of difficult to see conditions such as chronic pain; they can make us rethink the tacit consensuses that underlie stigma; and\, through empathy and metaphor\, they can allow us a sense of how others — such as neurodiverse patients — experience our shared contexts in different ways. \nThe arts can bring the hidden into sight\, and help to break down the barriers to healthcare for vulnerable patients. \nTea and coffee available. Donations welcome for actionforme.org.uk (Bristol).\nAll are very welcome.

SUMMARY:Radical Love: Clowning In Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Explore the role of art\, humour and radical love as a form of resistance\nAN INVITATION\nJoin Police Officer Az-Oolay for a one day workshop exploring the power of clowning to meet oppression with love. Sharing stories and techniques from her extensive experience – over 300 shifts in the streets\, at protests and demonstrations across Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond – Officer Az-Oolay aims to to transcend violence and oppression and to connect all beating hearts through love. \nWHAT IS IT?\nThis work embodies the mind and the qualities of the clown; bringing joy\, humour and softness to spaces and times of divisive narratives. \n“Narrative creates belief creates action” James Peck \nAt its core\, the essence of clowning is transformation; turning pain into creativity; reshaping our collective spaces through the belief in the inherent goodness of humanity; and meeting difficult situations with love. Officer Az-Oolay’s workshop will involve a presentation of her work and stories from her experiences followed by an embodied session focusing on “Straight to the Heart” Police Clown training including clown and physical theatre techniques. \nThe role of the Straight to the Heart clown police\, is to diffuse tensions between uniformed authorities and civilians. It is also a reminder of our shared humanity\, challenging established power dynamics. \nThis embodied workshop will invite participants to question: \n\nHow do I exercise faith?\nHow do I serve the space?\nHow does my heart become generous and funny?\nHow do I tell a story of love from my heart in times of bloodshed?\nHow can I ‘gap the mind’ and spend some time in the gap without running back to my habits?\nHow can I practice joy?\nHow can I share it?\n\nWHO IS IT FOR?\nClowns\, activists\, theatre practitioners\, circus and physical performers\, socially engaged practitioners and artists of all kinds\, enthusiasts and the curious!\nAnyone interested in exploring new forms of activism or expanding their understanding of clowning as a form of political expression.\nAnd anyone who wants to use humour and laughter to change the world. \nAPPLICATION & INVESTMENT\nTo apply please fill in this form by Friday 19 May 2024: https://forms.gle/V2tF82onAuZ3qZyX8 \nOnce invited; the course investment is: £40 – £75 sliding scale depending on your means\nA couple of bursary places are also available. Please get in touch if you would like to apply for one: email hidden; JavaScript is required \nABOUT OFFICER AZ-OOLAY\nOfficer Az-Oolay (“then may be” – in Hebrew”) is the lone officer of the Yashar-el Ha-Lev (Straight to the Heart\, in Hebrew) police force. The clown officer was a creative response that emerged from the weekly demonstrations in Balfour Street in Jerusalem in 2020\, against the corruption of Netanyahu’s government. As protesters were met by increased violence from police\, Officer Az-Oolay entered\, dressed in a wrinkled blue uniform\, a flower garlanded police hat\, a red clown’s nose. Officer Az-Oolay creates an inverted mirror to bodies of the police\, the army\, and bands of citizens who oppose equal rights; trying to break down the repressive power that they represent. Working throughout Jerusalem\, the West Bank and beyond\, Officer Az-Oolay ushers in a new political imagination\, providing moments of mercy and healing in these complex political times.\n@Shoteretazoolay

SUMMARY:The Improv Spotlight
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA night showcasing the very best of local talent in the Bristol improv community.\nJoin us for a night of spontaneous laughter at The Improv Spotlight. Immerse yourself in the world of unscripted comedy as two talented groups from our vibrant community take centre stage. These groups will weave unique stories\, characters\, and humour on the spot for your entertainment. The Spotlight highlights the spontaneous comedy of improvised theatre and proudly showcases the diverse skills of local troupes and artists within our community. \nDoors at 7pm. Show starts at 7.30pm. \nThis month under the Spotlight we have The Grumpkins and Up The Antics. \n*The Grumpkins*\nBristol-based improvisers Emma T and Pete Leaman make up the semi-mythical and all-magical duo The Grumpkins. They will weave a brand new hilarious show from nothing but their imaginations and sheer determination. \nThis (very) potentially ground-breaking masterpiece of a show may feature anything from adventure\, romance\, aliens\, angels\, demons\, knights\, drama\, mystery\, intrigue and a well-crafted gritty limited streaming series about a mismatched pair of detectives. It could also feature two construction workers talking about their favorite types of pie. \nWhat will they do? We don’t know.\nWhere did they come from? Cotton-eye Joe. \n*Up The Antics*\nBristol-based Up The Antics (BBC Radio 4 Extra) take us down the rabbit hole of improvised sketch comedy. With the suggestion of a location\, the antics will explore the characters and journeys taken to arrive there\, with hilarious results. \nLeicester Square Sketch-Off Semi-Finalists 2020\n‘A Real Romp’ ★★★★★ Inter:Mission\n‘Brilliantly Witty’ – ★★★★ EdFringeReview

SUMMARY:To Build a Bigger Table - Rehearsed Reading
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\n“When you have more than you need\, build a bigger table\, not a higher wall”\nAfter an incident at school on the last day before half term\, Keji\, Mo\, Amal\, Bea and their foster families are called into the headteachers office. As they unravel what happened\, we glimpse the every day bravery\, joy and humanity of foster-care set against the backdrop of child asylum claims. \n18:30 – 19:00 : Doors & bar open\n19:00 – 20:00 : Rehearsed Reading of To Build a Bigger Table\n20:00 – 20:30 : Post show discussion with our partners\n20:30 – 21:00 : Grab a drink at the bar and have a chat with our partners \nAbout the project\nTo Build a Bigger Table\, written by Lau Batty\, is a new play which explores the lived experiences of foster-carers of unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) in the UK.Truthful\, honouring and celebratory\, To Build a Bigger Table tells the untold story of the children who are arguably the most vulnerable in our society\, and of those who taking action by opening their home and setting a place of welcome at the dinner table. \nOur Partners & Post Show\nWe are keen that our work goes beyond being piece of art; to have a real life impact for those whose stories we are telling. We want to use the reading to begin a conversation that inspires audiences to take the next steps in enacting positive change in this area\, such as considering fostering or supporting organisations that work with asylum seekers\, refugees and UASC. Directly following the reading we will be handing over the conversation opened by our performance to our wonderful partners who work directly within these issues\, enabling audiences to engage with the work they do and consider how they might get involved.

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope Fusion Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nWE WANT ALL OF YOU\nWe throw dance parties where all bodies are invited. You already know how to dance\, we’re just here to give you permission to embrace all of the ways your body wants to move. \nCome alone\, come with friends\, dip in a toe or plunge in the deep end. However you want to party\, we’re here for it. \nSo that everyone feels safe to unleash their full selves on the dancefloor our only rule is to be excellent to one another (aka the “don’t be an asshole” policy). What does that mean? We expect you to be great at respecting other peoples’ boundaries and bodies\, to pay attention\, and to use your words if you’re unsure. Trust us\, asking is way less awkward than getting it wrong. \nLOCAL TEACHERS AND DJ’s\nWe’ll kick off the evening with an intro to social dancing for anyone who’d like some tips on dancing with a partner\, before local DJ’s get us moving with tracks ranging from slow and squishy to high-energy bangers. \nNo partner or experience necessary\, just bring yourself and shoes you can move in. \nLINE-UP\n7.30pm all-levels workshop\n8.30pm our DJ’s bring the party \nTickets available on Headfirst. We’ll also have tickets available on the door – cash or PayPal. \nBROKE?\nIf you can’t afford a ticket and want to come dancing\, email email hidden; JavaScript is required and we’ll try to help. \nWTF IS FUSION?\nFusion is partner dancing\, without the baggage. We’re not here to stick to a rigid set of steps\, but to actually dance with another person to good music on a night out. Fusion is all about improvisation\, connecting with your partner and seeing what happens. We don’t care if you’ve never danced before\, as long as you’re having a good time. \nFusion gets it’s name from fusing different styles of dance – maybe you’ve danced blues\, tango\, lindy\, west coast swing or hip hop or maybe you just like to get on the dance floor and shake it\, you have something to bring! \nFor us\, fusion is more than a dance\, it’s also a way of living the future we want to build. That means it is queer\, it is feminist\, and we don’t want anyone left behind. \nDANCE HAS NO GENDER\nIn fusion we…\n…don’t assume what role you take in the dance; whether you lead\, follow or switch is up to you and your partner\n…welcome everyone\, embracing queerness and all types of bodies\n…feel free to ask anyone to dance\, and are okay hearing and saying no sometimes\n…check-in with our partner about what kind of dance they would like\, including whether they feel happy with close embrace or being dipped

SUMMARY:Workshop: Co-Create a Mural with The Bristol Commons
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative design process & creative visual storytelling\nYou are invited to join The Bristol Commons to co-create a mural at PRSC! \nWe will begin by exploring the story of the commons\, looking back at its place in Bristol’s history and investigating the present landscape\, before radically imagining a city transformed by commoning. Through creative workshops we will explore collaborative visual story-telling and collective visioning\, the fruits of which will be woven into a mural design that will be communally painted on PRSC’s famous Outdoor Gallery wall! \nThe creation of this mural wall is an act of commoning itself! We invite you to participate in painting our collective story on the streets of Bristol. Through this\, we are re-commoning the streets themselves and growing a living commons. \nThere will be an introduction to the Bristol Commons\, and a presentation looking at muralism around the world and its historical relation to the commons. \nUsing collage poster making\, we will explore and develop work around the history of community spaces in Bristol. There will also be mapping\, written word (poetry) and group drawing workshops. \nThis is a playful and uncensored creative space where all are welcome! We will collaboratively imagine the mural design\, creating a tapestry woven with the voices of the people and our ideals for a future of the commons in Bristol. These works will be re-composed and scaled up onto the 9ft x 60ft wall – join us later in the week to help paint it! \nAll materials will be provided\, however feel free to bring relevant materials to reference/include around the Bristol Commons ethos. \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Spring // Friday 12 - Sunday 21 April 2024\nThe People's Art Fair encompasses a group exhibition\, performances and creative workshops & activities! SUMMARY:Sensitivity Sound Program #3
DESCRIPTION:Tickets…we’ve barely had time to let our synapses re-adjust from last time before putting ourselves under again – this time round we’re joined by a few unsung stalwarts of the UK underground and things are about to get weird… \nbrb>voicecoil AKA Big Road Breaker AKA Grozny Penthouse AKA voicecoil>brb has being going at it in one form or another for over 30 years now\, denting eardrums in various guises and pushing out tapes / CDs in the fringes of the UK underground\, their sludgey foley-esque electronics has been melting brains into syrupy glue since the early 90’s. \nFlanked by haunted atmospheric noise artist Depletion whose creaking and lurching loops tap so neatly into our filthy slab of earth’s rich history of horror and magick you’d expect it to be accompanied by faded VHS images of Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee – sheer abandonment from all comfort and sense of homeliness \nAlso joining proceedings will be UK duo Megzbow & Vinegar Tom who are partly responsible for the undisputedly best label in the UK right now – Brachliegen Tapes – who released their spectacular ‘Welsh Noise Vol. II’ sometime last year. We could launch into another half-cooked genre description but will just leave it by saying that they sent us a promo shot of their last gig and one of them has their head in a bucket connected to some contact mics…what else do you need to know? \nAs always music will be beamed via the CGC Soundsystem to ensure it be felt in the fibres of the soul. We’ll be projecting stratospheric and confounding visuals once again for maximum disorientation \nSENSITIVITY SOUND PROGRAM WILL RETURN TO THE LIGHT BUT NOT BEFORE MARCH 28TH \n“without dreams we would be cows in a field” – Werner Herzog
