SUMMARY:Rough State: A Panel Discussion with FAQ and the Bristol Cable
DESCRIPTION:Taking our current exhibition Frequently Asked Questions as its basis\, The Bristol Cable is hosting a public discussion that will explore the broader context around homelessness in Bristol. \nThis event comes at a time when rough sleeping is rising across the UK. In Bristol\, 1000 people faced street homelessness last year – up by nearly a quarter from the year before. Homeless deaths in this city are now the third highest out of any city in the UK. Meanwhile\, Bristol City Council has pledged to “halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eradicate it by 2027″. What are the real causes of homelessness? How can we end this crisis? \nFeaturing a range of contributors\, with perspectives on housing\, welfare\, homelessness services and beyond\, this event will explore the structural barriers to housing and different questions relating to homelessness today. The event will include opportunities for audience members to join the discussion with the speakers. \nSpeakers include: \n\nCharlie Eddisford (CHAS Bristol Housing Advice Service)\nAnthony Luvera (Artist)\nBen Richardson (Caring in Bristol)\nJoe Smith (Crisis)\n\nAbout the Bristol Cable: The Bristol Cable is a media co-operative that produces community-led journalism\, investigating issues in Bristol. We’re a new model of media: a co-operative owned by 2000+ local people. We run events to explore questions that matter and create vital spaces for public discussion in the city. \nVolunteering: If you’d like to volunteer to help host the evening email email hidden; JavaScript is required. Hosts will arrive around an hour early and help set up\, welcome people as they arrive\, tea & coffee and/or help tidy up at the end of the evening – although this is flexible\, depending on how you want to help. Volunteers add so much to our events and we really appreciate this contribution! \nAccessibility: Wheelchairs can access the event space but unfortunately the event toilet is not accessible. The nearest accessible toilet is at The Canteen. The pavement outside the Space is also a bit uneven. If you’d like help entering the space we can arrange for someone to meet you outside. For assistance of this kind or other accessibility needs please get in touch. Email email hidden; JavaScript is required. \nPlease register for your FREE ticket here: https://www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/#date=2019-11-28&event_id=58796 \nThursday 28th November\, 6.30-8pm \nFAQ Exhibition open 10am-5pm daily from Nov 27 – Dec 12\nLaunch party – Tuesday 26th November\, 6-9pm\nMake Them Count – Wednesday 27th November\, 11am-1pm\nSTRATA: A Visual Assembly for Homelessness with IC Visual Lab – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December\, 10am–5pm both days

SUMMARY:The Bristol Cable present: Chav Solidarity with author D Hunter
DESCRIPTION:The Bristol Cable welcomes author D Hunter to present his book “Chav Solidarity” – “part autobiography\, part meditation on trauma\, class and identity\, part one finger salute into the face of respectability politics\, but mostly an articulation of the contradictory heart of Chavvy sh*t heads across the U.K”. \nHunter will read excerpts from the book\, as well as discussing it’s origins and surrounding issues. This will be followed by a question and answer session and open discussion regarding the issues raised in the book. \nHunter uses his experiences as child sex worker\, teenage crack addict\, violent thug and community activist to examine the ways in which our classed experiences shape the ways in which we think and do our politics. \nContent Warning: Throughout the book there are references to sexual violence\, racism (both interpersonal and institutional)\, gendered violence (physical\, psychological and verbal)\, various forms of physical violence\, suicide\, drug usage\, transphobia\, murder\, and police brutality. The subjects discussed in this event may reflect the book content. \nFree/donation tickets for members and £3 for non-members –  available here.
