SUMMARY:Cost of Living Crisis: Organising meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are in crisis: a Covid crisis\, a care crisis\, a climate crisis\, a cost-of-living crisis. The government has killed of hundreds of thousands through austerity\, pandemic corruption and ineptitude – and is now driving millions more into poverty. The economy is set up to exploit us: as households face costs of over £1000\, as the cost of living shoots up by nearly 10%\, as interest rates and rents rise\, oil companies rake in record profits from higher prices\, employers keep wages low and government holds down pensions and other benefits while increasing National Insurance. \nDemonstrations across the country on Sat 12 Feb demanded action on the rising cost of living. Further nationwide protests are planned in March and April. Come along to our organising meeting to discuss how we can build the campaign in Bristol\, to build pressure for action to tackle the cost of living crisis.

SUMMARY:Introduction to public speaking for women - 3 week course
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3 week introductory course for women\, who are members of the labour party\, who would like to take more of a role speaking in political meetings\, or speaking at events. \nThe course involves three 2 hour sessions and you need to attend all three. The course will give you the confidence you need to speak up\, the skills you need to be heard\, and the tools to keep your speech structured\, convincing and concise. \nThe goal of this course is to increase the role of women as speakers at meetings at events\, both in terms of women taking the podium\, but also to give women the confidence and tools they need to ask questions\, speak to motions and effectively join discussions. \nThe course will be structured in 3 two hour sessions and will cost £6 payable on the door at the first session (free for unwaged): \nSession 1: Practicalities and confidence \nThis session will focus on the practical things you need to consider when speaking in public. First\, we will cover how to project your voice and how to use a microphone effectively. Second\, we will go on to discuss issues of confidence in speaking and asking questions. And third\, we will discuss keeping things as concise as possible. Time constraints are often a formal constraint in political meetings\, but also key in keeping people’s attention and making an impression. \nSession 2: Persuasion and structure \nOnce we’ve got the skills we need in order to speak up\, we need to know how to make what we’ve said have an impact. In the second session\, we will discover how to structure a speech or question to give it impact. We will discuss techniques from rhetoric\, public speaking and even stand-up comedy to make a lasting impression. \nSession 3: Putting it together \nIn this session\, I will ask participants to bring along a specific subject or policy they feel passionately about. We will work to structure a short (up to 5 minutes)\, persuasive speech about this subject. The context of speech is up to the participant: it can be a “soapbox” style speech you might give it a protest or rally\, it can be presenting a formal motion at a meeting\, or a more informal raising of an issue at a meeting. We will then have each participant present their speech to the group\, which will also allow for practice in asking questions and joining discussions. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Hannah Little is a lecturer in science communication. Her expertise lies in making scientific subjects accessible to the general public. She has experience with stand-up comedy and public speaking\, including three-minute scientific talks designed to communicate\, engage and convince. These skills are highly transferrable to politics\, which she is happy to explore with the attendees at these workshops.

SUMMARY:Radical Labour Councils: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:Labour Councils have a long and complex history of protest and radical politics\, when faced with staunch opposition from central government. \nFrom the Poplar rates rebellion\, nuclear free zones\, to the creation of Black History Month\, we can look to radical councils of the past and present for inspiration for how future councils can behave in opposition when dealing with drastic funding cuts. \nWith councillor selection for the 2020 local elections coming up\, it’s important to have Labour councillors willing to implement radical policies to alleviate the local impacts of a Tory government.

SUMMARY:Fighting the Cuts
DESCRIPTION:How do we fight back against the cuts? How do we get the word out about the damage that the Tories are forcing onto Bristol? \nBristol is facing a budget deficit of over £100 million by 2020. This current “graph of doom” means our Labour council is being forced by the Tories to make harsh cuts. Proposals include closing 17 out of the 27 libraries in Bristol\, and until recently the council tax reduction scheme for the poorest in the city. \nOur speakers include Esther Giles\, Bristol local campaign forum treasurer\, a speaker on the affect of the cuts\, and Ange Crossley (Secretary of Bristol East CLP).
