SUMMARY:Advocate!
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition curated by students on the intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol\nOpen 31st May – 1st June\, 11 am to 5 pm\nAdvocate! Arts to shine a light on invisible struggles and stigma in medicine. \nThis collection of artworks has been created and collated by Bristol Medical students who have taken a year away from their medical curriculum to study humanities. Advocate! aims to shine some light onto several aspects of wellbeing and medicine which are currently not well enough understood\, including: experiences of chronic pain and illness; stigma in medical practice; and the experiences of neurodiverse people in healthcare settings. \nThe exhibition aims to show and depict aspects of these subjects without judgement\, even (and especially) when it involves matters that can be difficult to bring up in every-day conversation because of associated stigma and ignorance. \nMedical practitioners have a vital role to play in advocating for and empowering patients\, but may themselves share in the general culture’s ignorance and habits of stigmatisation. \nThe arts can raise awareness\, and so understanding\, of difficult to see conditions such as chronic pain; they can make us rethink the tacit consensuses that underlie stigma; and\, through empathy and metaphor\, they can allow us a sense of how others — such as neurodiverse patients — experience our shared contexts in different ways. \nThe arts can bring the hidden into sight\, and help to break down the barriers to healthcare for vulnerable patients. \nTea and coffee available. Donations welcome for actionforme.org.uk (Bristol).\nAll are very welcome.

SUMMARY:Proud Flesh
DESCRIPTION:Considering Bodies — bodies broken\, bodies mended\, and bodies as seen by others\nAn Exhibition of Creative Pieces by third-year students on the Intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol.\nFriday and Saturday\, 26 and 27th May // Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft Space\, Jamaica Street // 10.30 am to 5 pm \nEach year the University of Bristol offers medical students (from Bristol and elsewhere) the opportunity to pause their studies and gain an intercalated BA in medical humanities. Joining English and Philosophy students\, these medical students are able to explore some of the wider issues around healthcare from an arts and humanities perspective. \nThis exhibition comes as the culmination of these students’ study and is built around a range of creative pieces from the students which consider bodies — bodies broken\, bodies mended\, and bodies as seen by others. \nThese works are supplemented with reports from students’ experiences learning about the role that music\, art and theatre may play in therapy and how the arts contribute to well-being within the medical community. \nThis year the students reports include the work of the Drive project\, some reflections on the use of theatre in thinking about empathy in the doctor-patient relationship\, and the work of the Jenner Museum in Berkeley (the ‘home’ of vaccination). \nAll are very welcome.

SUMMARY:Intention
DESCRIPTION:An Exhibition of Creative Pieces by students on the Intercalated BA in Medical Humanities at the University of Bristol \nSaturday\, 2nd June\nPeoples Republic of Stokes Croft Space\, Jamaica Street\n10.30 am to 5 pm \nEach year the University of Bristol offers medical students the opportunity to pause their studies and gain an intercalated BA in medical humanities. Joining English and Philosophy students\, these medical students are able to explore some of the wider issues around healthcare with a particular emphasis placed on arts-based inquiry. \nThis exhibition is built around a range of creative pieces from the students which highlight the role of the arts in extending perceptions around embodiment and alternative ways of knowing and connecting. The curation of diverse works explores particular questions around meaning-making within a collectively agreed theme of ‘Intention’. The works are supplemented by reports of students’ experiences in learning about the role that music\, art and theatre may play in therapy\, and also how the arts contribute to well-being and self-knowledge within the medical community. \nThe exhibition also includes reflections on some of the events which form a part of the students’ learning\, such as the annual Medicine Unboxed conference in Cheltenham\, a visit to the Jenner Museum\, Berkeley\, and a seminar with Sam Gugliani (author of Histories).
