SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope XXL
DESCRIPTION:We throw dance parties where all bodies are invited. You already know how to dance\, we’re just here to give you permission to embrace all of the ways your body wants to move. \nCome alone\, come with friends\, dip in a toe or plunge in the deep end. However you want to party\, we’re here for it. \nSo that everyone feels safe to unleash their full selves on the dancefloor our only rule is to be excellent to one another (aka the “don’t be an asshole” policy). What does that mean? We expect you to be great at respecting other peoples’ boundaries and bodies\, to pay attention\, and to use your words if you’re unsure. Trust us\, asking is way less awkward than getting it wrong. \nFRIDAY NIGHT AT KALEIDOSCOPE XXL \nWe’re kicking off the weekend Bristol-style at the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft\, a community-first venue who’s ethos of art-as-activism is one we can get behind. \nSince this falls on International Women’s day\, we’re excited to bring you and all woman-and-nonbinary line-up of DJs and live music. Our live act for the night is Coren feat. Enaira \nYes\, Coren is back at Kaleidoscope XXL. This time with a synth\, another drum machine\, and gorgeous harmonies from Enaira. Coren writes fusion-infused electro-pop\, built from sparkly synth\, gentle piano\, electronic beats\, and soaring vocals. Inspired by MUNA\, Sam Smith\, and Rina Sawayama\, they sing about love\, panic attacks and everything in between. Enaira is an enchanting singer from Germany\, who loves adding second voices to enhance the emotion of the music. Coren and Enaira met at a fusion retreat and have been singing together ever since. Enaira’s gorgeous harmonies add extra sparkle and feels to Coren’s songs. They can’t wait to sing for you. 🧡 \nSee you on the dancefloor! 💜✨ \nWTF IS FUSION? \nFusion is partner dancing\, without the baggage. We’re not here to stick to a rigid set of steps\, but to actually dance with another person to good music on a night out. Fusion is all about improvisation\, connecting with your partner and seeing what happens. We don’t care if you’ve never danced before\, as long as you’re having a good time. \nFusion gets it’s name from fusing different styles of dance – maybe you’ve danced blues\, tango\, lindy\, west coast swing or hip hop or maybe you just like to get on the dance floor and shake it\, you have something to bring! \nFor us\, fusion is more than a dance\, it’s also a way of living the future we want to build. That means it is queer\, it is feminist\, and we don’t want anyone left behind. \nOur musical goals for Kaleidoscope XXL are to: \nBroaden the range of music we dance to in fusion\nPlatform artists who are left out of the mainstream\nOf course\, that doesn’t mean we’re abandoning the classic floor-fillers. We’ve already got a several live acts in the works that we are very excited about\, and a list of DJ’s to make you swoon. \nParties will run: \nFriday: 8pm to 3am at PRSC\nSaturday: 8pm to 4am at The Hideout\nSunday: 8pm to 1.30am at The Loco Klub

SUMMARY:The Improv Spotlight
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA night showcasing the very best of local talent in the Bristol improv community.\nJoin us for a night of spontaneous laughter at The Improv Spotlight. Immerse yourself in the world of unscripted comedy as two talented groups from our vibrant community take centre stage. These groups will weave unique stories\, characters\, and humour on the spot for your entertainment. The Spotlight highlights the spontaneous comedy of improvised theatre and proudly showcases the diverse skills of local troupes and artists within our community. \nDoors at 7pm. Show starts at 7.30pm. \nThis month under the Spotlight… \n*Table Read*\nNot every classic movie started out as a classic… As part of a touring series of screenings\, the British Institute of Film is screening exclusive behind the scenes footage of the first ever script readthrough of the most famous movies in the history of cinema\, as chosen by the audience! Actors may be fired\, directors may be questioned\, and there’s probably a good reason this footage never saw the light of day until now. Come and witness the entirely improvised Table Read for all the inside scoops on your favourite movies… \n*Tales From The Wasteland*\nAn improvised post-apocalyptic adventure. Our cast of wastelanders will take a single suggestion from you and craft an entire narrative before your very eyes with no pre-prepared characters\, story or dialogue. \nIf the world was ending\, what would be the one thing you’d want to survive? Our band of dystopian adventurers will explore a new world and find out what’s left over after Earth’s devastation. Expect raiders\, mutants and violence over scarce resources in this absurd dark comedy inspired by classics of the genre such as Mad Max\, The Last of Us and Fallout. \nThis show is not recommended for children due to the tendency to have dark themes\, violence and cannibalism. Seriously\, cannibalism comes up way too often.

SUMMARY:Socialism or Barbarism: studying Rosa Luxemburg
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIntroduction – who was Rosa Luxemburg?\nThe first event in our series on Rosa Luxemburg. Suggested reading for this session TBC! \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \n——————————— \nRosa Luxemburg was a Polish revolutionary socialist\, Marxist and anti-war activist. She was a a key figure of the revolutionary socialist movements of Poland and Germany during the late 19th and early 20th century. She made significant contributions to socialist theory and knowledge including being the first theorist to identify ideas that developed into concepts such as imperialism\, globalisation and the military industrial complex. \nThis seven week course will examine Rosa Luxembourg’s contribution to theory regarding economics\, identity\, militarism\, strikes\, and revolution\, as well as exploring the context of her life. All are welcome\, with little or no previous knowledge of her work. Each week we will identify a selection of her writing before the session so people can familiarise themselves\, but we hope that people with a variety of levels of knowledge will attend. \nThese events will happen at 6:30pm on Tuesdays on Feb 6th\, Feb 20th\, Mar 5th\, Mar 19th\, Apr 2nd\, Apr 16th\, and Apr 30th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:Liberation Theology - Religion & Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Tickets“When I feed the poor they call me a saint. When I ask why so many people are poor they call me a communist.” – Hélder Câmara \nThis week we look at liberation theology: a combination of Christian social teaching and Marxist socio-political analysis. \nMany proponents of liberation theology were involved in Latin American revolutions and activism but the focus on the oppressed worldwide has led to the approach being applied to black and queer liberation\, amongst other strands of social justice. Does it mean anything to say that ‘Jesus was a communist?’ Is organised religion always inherently oppressive? What can socialists learn from the way that the Church still manages to reach and influence the world’s poor an oppressed worldwide? \nSuggested (but optional!) reading/listening:\n– these two episodes of The Magnificast: The CIA & Liberation Theology / Saint Oscar Romero and the Option for the Poor\n– this episode of Bread & Rosaries\n– Chapter 20 of The Gospel in Solentiname \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. \n\nWhat is the relationship between religion and socialism? Should there even be one? What can a largely secular movement take and learn from faith traditions? How can leftwing and faith communities work together to improve society today? \nFollowing on from the successful/insightful/interesting panel session at this year’s Bristol Transformed\, BT is starting a reading and discussion group along similar themes. Each month we will pursue a different set theme with the discussion based loosely around a choice of reading – Introductory\, further and podcast options will be available to suit your expertise\, interests and time constraints. \nOver the course of the year we intend to cover the Marxist approach to religion\, the history of how religious and leftwing political movements have influenced each other and start to consider what the modern left could learn from religious practices. \nWe welcome participation from all people: those of all faiths\, all political beliefs and none are invited to join the discussion. \nThe sessions will mostly be run in a P4C (Philosophy for Communities) format which means that they are interactive and participatory with the content and direction of the session decided democratically. \nDon’t worry if you’re worrying about managing to complete the reading. Do your best. Turning up and taking part is more important. \nDoors open from 6pm for a 6:30pm start. The sessions will take place on the following Tuesdays: Jan 16th\, Feb 13th\, Mar 12th\, and Apr 9th. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 in order to help cover venue costs. There are some limited free tickets as well for comrades who will struggle to contribute this.

SUMMARY:Global Citizenship Education Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register for your free ticket\nWe are very excited to welcome a delegation of reparations activist from Global Citizenship Education for Planet Repairs Action (GCEPRA) based in Ghana on a visit to Bristol. We will be discussing practical links of solidarity between community projects across the UK and in indigenous communities of resistance in West Afrika. \nTogether we will ground in the progressive histories of this city in order to build the internationalist relationships we need as both the UK and Ghana are having election years in 2024. We will be facing different challenges but we are all living under outdated political systems which have opposed struggles for freedom both locally and globally and which are unable to respond to the current social and environmental problems. \nWith the upswell of positive action for self-determination and Planet Repairs\, led by grassroots communities across the world\, this system of domination and violence is on the back foot\, and so we need to get organised and work on tackling the needs of our communities glocally. \nDoors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Food will be available for a donation \nAbout us: \nThe Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution (PRALER) is building relationships between communities globally which are challenging systems of miseducation and developing true education oriented towards tackling the needs of all our communities in a world which is going through multiple crises.

SUMMARY:Community Dinner & Open Meeting for Planet Repairs
DESCRIPTION:Register for your free ticket\nWe have a window of opportunity that only comes every other generation – will we take it or waste it? Across the PRALER network we will take it! Join us and walk as one with communities building a new world of Global Justice. \nWe are launching a series of community dinners and open meetings with the aim to provide an action-learning space for people in Bristol who want to engage in practical ways with communities around the world who are taking back control of their lands and their education. \nThere are many traditions of peoples to peoples solidarity which we have a duty to build on\, such as the hundreds of thousands of people across the UK who 200 years ago boycotted sugar produced through slavery\, or the example of Sylvia Pankhurst who dedicated much of her life in solidarity with the struggle for Afrikan liberation as well as for women’s right to vote. \nWe need to rebuild internationalist networks and institutions so that we can walk as one with our global family and ensure the sharing of knowledge about how we best can enact repair. Together we will explore questions such as: \n\nWhat are the problems and educational needs here in Bristol?\nWhat reparatory actions can we take that are meaningful for communities globally?\nWhat kind of community institutions do we need to build to tackle our problems?\n\nWe hope you will join us\, food and educational material provided. Donations accepted to cover costs and we would appreciate if people register in advance so that we have an idea of numbers. \nAgenda:\n6.30pm – Food and welcome\n7.00pm – What is PRALER and what is happening across the network?\n7.30pm – Discussion in breakout groups about calls to action\n8.15pm – Feedback from breakout groups\n8.45pm – Closing and next steps \nAbout the organiser: \nThe Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution (PRALER) is a process led by communities of resistance in the Global South with the aim to challenge the education system and to build globally connected educational processes for us all to learn what we need to advance environmental\, reparatory and cognitive justice\, otherwise known as Planet Repairs. \nHere in Bristol a Community Of Life-long Learning Study Action Group (COLLSAG) is being organised as an educational space which is accountable and directly linked to the communities of resistance in the Global South which are leading the PRALER process\, and we are organising these open meetings to invite people to join us.\n\nPeople's Art Fair: Winter // Friday 1 - Sunday 10 December 2023\nThe People's Art Fair runs from December 1-10\, and encompasses a group exhibition\, performances and creative workshops & activities!
