SUMMARY:Book Launch: Friends of Israel
DESCRIPTION:Book a FREE ticketBristol Transformed welcomes Hil Aked to discuss their new book “Friends of Israel: The Backlash against Palestinian Solidarity”\, due to be published by Verso in mid-April. \n‘Friends of Israel provides a forensically researched account of the activities of Israel’s advocates in Britain\, showing how they contribute to maintaining Israeli apartheid. The book traces the history and changing fortunes of key actors within the British Zionist movement in the context of the Israeli government’s contemporary efforts to repress a rising tide of solidarity with Palestinians expressed through the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Offering a nuanced and politically relevant account of pro-Israel actors’ strategies\, tactics\, and varying levels of success in key arenas of society\, it draws parallels with the similar anti-boycott campaign waged by supporters of the erstwhile apartheid regime in South Africa. \n‘By demystifying the actors involved in the Zionist movement\, the book provides an anti-racist analysis of the pro-Israel lobby which robustly rebuffs anti-Semitic conspiracies. Sensitively and accessibly written\, it emphasises the complicity of British actors – both those in government and in civil society. Drawing on a range of sources including interviews with leading pro-Israel activists and Palestinian rights activists\, documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests and archival material\, Friends of Israel is a much-needed contribution to Israel/Palestine-related scholarship and a useful resource for the Palestine solidarity movement.’ (Verso Books) \nBook your free ticket on Headfirst »

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Wulf & Eadwacer Theatre
DESCRIPTION:++++ Due to unforseen circumstances we have had to cancel this event. +++++++++++ We hope to bring you some Wulf & Eadwacer theatre soon. +++++++\nWulf & Eadwacer are bringing their latest theatrical offering to the People’s Art Fair. \nWulf & Eadwacer aim to give you the only free medicine… Laughter.\nTheir theatre explores the complexities surrounding human existence\, the essence of which\, the company highlights through true absurdity. They place their work at the heart of the human condition taking reference from antiquity to contemporary\, all throughout time to provide rationale against the thoughts that have plagued the mind of humanity. \nThrough a collaborative effort of a team of alternatively minded thinkers they seek meaning in the absence of truth. In a world where there is a million reasons to cry\, Wulf & Eadwacer will give you at least one more. \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Spring // Friday 31 March - Sunday 9 April 2023\nThe People's Art Fair (PAF) is a ten day long cultural festival providing a platform for visual artists\, poets\, musicians and workshop leaders to show off their talents. PAF is kept free for artists to take part in\, and all ticketed events apply the principle 'no one turned away through lack of funds'.  PAF is a natural extension of our work to break down barriers and increase inclusion and voice\, and is a direct challenge to the exclusionary idea that 'real art’ is exclusive and only created by\, and relevant to a small cultured\, wealthy elite. PAF promotes creative cultural practice as an essential tool for people to challenge or highlight social injustice and to galvanise change.\n\nThroughout the fair we collaborate with local social-minded creatives to offer workshops; a poetry open mic; and a music jam session\, inviting everyone to share and celebrate their talents during the fair. The net result is a visually diverse and culturally rich event featuring hundreds of artworks from over 70 artists; and the emergence of a confident\, mutually supportive creative community that is joyful to be part of.\n\n Browse the People's Art Fair: Spring Exhibition online\n \nPeople’s Art Fair: Opening NightJoin us for the opening night of the People's Art Fair - be among the first to see all the amazing artwork on offer\, access your inner artist with some fun & easy creative activities\, and have a drink while you browse\, schmooze & enjoy live music from Brainbeau. Acting as a celebration of culture and expressive art\, the People’s Art Fair is open to artists\, makers\, photographers\, painters\, sculptors and creatives of all shapes and flavours. We know art isn’t just paintings hanging on walls\, so the People’s Art Fair often includes an art fair\, live music jam sessions\, poetry open mic\, and all sorts of creative workshops and activities. SUMMARY:UpFront Survivors Pop-Up Cultural Space
DESCRIPTION:Free Creative Workshop & Events Programme For Adult Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse\, Friends and Allies\nUpFront Survivors is a pioneering\, three-year programme of creative changemaking\, designed and led by survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA) and allies in partnership with frontline services. \nAn estimated 11 million adults – or one in six people – have experienced child sexual abuse (CSA) in the UK. CSA survivors lack representation on national and local platforms\, as experiences of CSA continue to be hidden and taboo. Survivors live with ongoing silencing and censorship\, and many are not able to safely self-identify or speak out about their experiences. Most have never met another survivor\, so do not feel part of a community. Survivors of CSA do not have existing role models or cultural infrastructure\, and our voices are omitted from diversity and inclusion discourses. \nUsing arts-based activities\, the aim of UpFront Survivors is to work against stigma\, silencing and censorship towards social justice\, access and inclusion for the CSA survivor community. \nWe are celebrating the launch of this ground-breaking project with one of the first ever pop-up cultural spaces for the CSA survivor community\, friends and allies\, featuring a free programme of daily creative workshops and cultural events. \nUnless otherwise stated\, all workshops and events take place at PRSC. \nAll our spaces are relaxed environments\, meaning you can move around the space as you need to during events and performances\, and leave (and come back) at any time. \nAll events are free to attend but pre-booking is required for workshops due to limited capacity. SUMMARY:Laughter Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Laughter Yoga at the PRSC Space. \nWhat is laughter yoga ? (I hear you cry !)  \n\nLaughter Yoga is a type of yoga that involves laughing voluntarily for a prolonged period of time. The laughter does not have to be for any humorous reason\, as long as the yogi performs the actions of laughing.  \n\nLaughter Yoga is a beneficial physical practice\, as the human body and mind cannot distinguish between spontaneous and voluntary laughter. Therefore\, Laughter Yoga brings about all the physical and mental benefits of “real” laughter in a fun and playful way. In particular\, it often leads to elevated mood\, playfulness\, increased lung capacity and a tremendous sense of lightness and freedom that you can integrate into your life moving forward.  \n\nBenefits: \nLaughter yoga is said to be good for anyone who wants to bring more joy\, playfulness and sociability into their life. It is also claimed to help the body and mind feel more energized and healthy. Some studies suggest that laughter lowers stress hormone levels and may improve tolerance of pain. Yogis may leave their session feeling uplifted and peaceful. \n\nWhat actually happens in the class: \nIn a typical class\, we will start with some warm ups to loosen up the body and the mind\, beginning to get in touch with our childish side.  \nWarm ups might include conscious breathing or guided movement for example.  Then we will move into various short games that get us laughing\, playing and being silly! \nThe games often include improvisation\, stepping into the shoes of another\, and embodying the egolessness of a child.   \nSometimes the laughter will begin as a voluntary act\, leading to natural\, contagious laughter.  Finally\, the class will end with a short relaxation as we allow the endorphins to wash over us. \nYou are now enlightened\, that was easy eh?!  (You’re welcome 😉

SUMMARY:The People's Comedy: in Solidarity with The Bristol Cable
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe Bristol Cable and The People’s Comedy share a lot in common. We both believe profoundly in the power of collectivism and working together. The Bristol Cable launched in 2014 as an alternative media platform\, owned by its members with stories suggested by them too. In a similar vein\, The People’s Comedy launched as an alternative to commercialized comedy (the kind that markets itself to vast audiences at the expense of substance)\, and to be a platform for the evocative and daring\, whilst also ensuring that all acts are paid. \nWe are honoured and appreciative that The Bristol Cable are helping to sponsor our February night\, meaning that we can boost the pay that we give to our comedians whilst welcoming the company of some The Bristol Cable members on the evening. It will also be an opportunity to raise awareness of the Stokes Croft Land Trust\, which you can buy into if you’d like to own a bit of Stokes Croft! https://prsc.org.uk/sclt/ \nThe Bristol Cable:\n✔️ Awarded the 2019 British Journalism Award for local journalism\n✔️ Shortlisted for the 2020 Orwell Foundation Prize\n✔️ So much more available here: https://thebristolcable.org/join/?joinbutton=headerclick – why not join them for a few quid a month? \nThe People’s Comedy:\n✔️ Nominated for best themed night in the UK in 2020 (Chortle)\n✔️ Raised thousands of pounds for grass-roots comedians\n✔️ Respected and loved by audiences and acts alike \nDoors & bar open at 7.00pm\, show starts promptly at 7.30pm. \nLineup includes:\nDonna Landy\nKate Martin\nOmari Douglas\nKatie Price\nKitty Messalina\nVanessa Hammock\n& MC\, Brendan Common \nFor more info about us\, visit www.thepeoplescomedy.org \n* Please note that this event is being photographed\, so if you would like to avoid being in any photos\, please just email us at email hidden; JavaScript is required

SUMMARY:Dismantling Rape Culture and Male Violence: A Survivor-led Course for Men
DESCRIPTION:TicketsSaturday 14 & Sunday 15 January\, 11:00 – 16:30 \nJoin SLEEC for this free two day\, in person course to support you with the insight\, knowledge\, ideas and tools to navigate sexism\, challenge rape culture\, nurture the best parts of being a man and actively make needed change. \nHaving curated and taught this course\, online over the last two years\, we are now launching our first in person Men’s Learning Course: Dismantling Male Violence and Rape culture: A Survivor Led Course for Men. \nThis course will be an open\, honest\, compassionate space where we collectively learn through discussion\, questioning and challenging ourselves. Led by women who are survivors (of rape\, sexual violence and domestic abuse) who have extensively worked within survivor services and campaigns to end male violence – offering you the opportunity to ask ask any uncomfortable questions or those you have felt unable to ask in a non-judgemental space. \nThe course will include different speakers\, such as Lewis Wedlock\, whose work is directly and indirectly connected with these subjects and these conversations. It’s essential that we listen\, learn and gain knowledge from those with different experiences and perspectives on what the roots causes of male violence and rape culture are. \nAlthough we will explore difficult topics and we will have challenging conversations\, we will also be learning from a place of joy\, connection and humour. \nThere aren’t enough spaces built like this\, but if we build them together then we can both understand and support each other from a place of empathy and care. \nThis is an exciting opportunity to deeply learn in a different way; where we unlearn as a community and a collective rather than with division\, fear and blame. \nIt can feel overwhelming seeing violence and abuse and not knowing what to do. When so many men are causing extreme harm and you feel powerless to stop it\, it’s hard to know how and where to begin challenging this behaviour in everyday life. This course has been lovingly built to help you face these challenges powerfully. \nWe need you to see the severity of danger we all face\, especially women and marginalised genders. We need you to see the very real violence we all experience\, by men. We need you to understand the real impact of sexism and the patriarchy. \nIf you want to address the actions of men and help create a world where women are actually safe to walk the streets – then we invite you to come to this course and join a beautiful community of men\, learning how to work towards ending male violence and sexism. \nCourse content:\n• Understanding what sexism and misogyny looks like in 2023. What is the impact on all genders?\n• How patriarchy maintains power dynamics\, gender roles and male violence. How sexism impacts men.\n• What is rape culture and how it shows up in ways you don’t always see.\n• How to actually intervene in situations of violence and aggression.\n• Unpacking the fear of rejection and vulnerability.\n• Nurturing positive masculinity.\n• Starting difficult conversations\, navigating defensiveness and helping other men unlearn rape culture.\n• Connecting to the experiences of survivors/women and know how to actually help.\n• Exploring the complexities of sexuality\, sex work\, porn and kink.\n• Prevention work\, exploring accountability and community response.\n• How to challenge male violence and rape culture on a wider scale. \nReserve your free ticket here »
