SUMMARY:The People's Theatre present "Do you want some toxic masculinity with that?"
DESCRIPTION:Book Tickets\nPerformed at 19:00 daily from Friday 15 – Tuesday 19 October \nThe People’s Theatre are proud to announce their first play: “Do you want some toxic masculinity with that?” \nThe play is about the negative\, insidious consequences of toxic masculinity\, of not opening up / speaking your truth / dealing with the root causes of whatever mental health issue you may be facing. At the same time\, the play showcases the positive\, cathartic effects that opening up and owning your reality has for each and every person. Who will you empathise with more? \nAs the play is performed\, you’ll wonder how many people on Park Street\, Stokes Croft\, Kings Street and so on are suffering in silence… Are enacting the very ills the play hopes to expose… Both through comedy and tragedy. \nThe People’s Theatre comes off the back of the recent success of The People’s Comedy\, a night started at the PRSC\, showcasing didactic comedians and raising thousands in ticket sales which have gone straight back to the acts. The key pillar for The People’s Theatre is getting everyday folks’ bums on seats. Contrary to popular belief\, theatre from Aristophanes to Shakespeare was a consumable for the masses\, not the elite. Living up to this reality is a singular aim of TPT. \nTickets are £8 each or get four for £20 – available now from Headfirst »

Sensual bachata is an independent dance form with strict lead and follow principles. The dance is an interpretation of the music with mostly circular movements and body waves. When the music has stronger beats\, however\, the dance also uses isolations and dips.

Living up to this reality is a singular aim of TPT. \nTickets are £4 each or four for £10 – get yours now from Headfirst. \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Friday 17 September - Sunday 26 September 2021\nThe People's Art Fair encompasses a group exhibition\, performances\, creative workshops & activities\, and a makers market! Open to artists\, makers\, photographers\, painters\, sculptors and creatives of all shapes and flavours\, the People's Art Fair acts as a celebration of culture and expressive art. \n\nMost of the artworks are available to buy\, along with prints\, cards\, badges\, stickers and other smaller bits\, and the bar will be open for soft drinks\, hot drinks and locally sourced beer\, cider & wine.\n\n\nPeople’s Art Fair: Opening PartyJoin us for art\, drinks\, music\, and a first look at this massive exhibition - this is a great opportunity to meet some of the artists involved! SUMMARY:People's Art Fair: Autumn Show
DESCRIPTION:Opening night: Thursday 16 Sep\, 6-9pm\nExhibition open daily: 12-6pm\, Fri 17 – Sun 26 Sep\nFREE ENTRY \nThe People’s Art Fair (PAF) is a collaborative group exhibition devised and hosted by the PRSC and open to all artists. The fair follows the principal that together we are greater than the sum of our parts\, and demonstrates that bringing together artists involved in individual creative practice produces something unique and special. Embodying the ethos of collective action\, the artists help to hang\, manage and promote the show together. We want to break down barriers to the art world and challenge the elitism and sense of exclusivity that pervades many gallery shows. PAF attempts to level the playing field with no entry fee (for artists or visitors) and an open invitation to everyone to take part\, offering a platform to all the talented people out there no matter their medium. \nOur last PAF ran online in December 2020 and featured over 40 artists\, including well established professionals\, young people exhibiting their art for the first time\, a homeless artist and everyone in between. This time we are coming back big with the fair running over ten days and featuring art markets over both weekends plus a range of other creative activities including a music jam\, a poetry open mic\, collage workshop\, and the first ever performance of the People’s Theatre. \n\nMake Music — Create a Collage — Create a Cork Creature — Paint a Domino \nThu 16 Sep\, 6-9pm: Exhibition opening night\nFri 17 Sep\, 7-11pm: The People’s Jam Session\, hosted by The Suspicious Jazz Rollups (£4 suggested donation OTD)\nSat 18 Sep\, 12-6pm: Art Market\, with drop in workshops for Faerie Cork Creatures 1-4pm\, and Domino Painting 12-6pm\nSun 19 Sep\, 12-6pm: Art Market\, with drop in Domino Painting 12-6pm\nWed 22 Sep\, 6-7.30pm: Cork Creatures Workshop with ZamZam (£5 – book here)\nThu 23 Sep\, 7-11pm: The People’s Poetry\, spoken word & open mic curated by Emma Ako (£4 suggested donation OTD)\nFri 24 Sep\, 7-11pm: The People’s Theatre\, bringing irreverence back to the stage\nSat 25 Sep\, 12-6pm: Art Market\, with drop in Octopus Odyssey Collage Club 1-4pm\nSun 26 Sep\, 12-6pm: Art Market\, with drop in Domino Painting 12-6pm. Sensual bachata is an independent dance form with strict lead and follow principles. The dance is an interpretation of the music with mostly circular movements and body waves. When the music has stronger beats\, however\, the dance also uses isolations and dips.

He has an infectious passion and love for Bachata\, and says he wants to teach us all some new moves as he promotes the Bachata-style of dancing alongside spreading his love of the music and culture from his homeland. \n WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?\nThe classes aim to teach you the beauty of Sensual & Dominican Bachata (Latin Dances) to help you enjoy your social dancing. \nYou will learn:\n– basic steps and technique of Sensual & Dominican Bachata\n– fun and easy to lead moves and routines\n– musicality – how to interact with the music\n– men’s and ladies’ styling\n– how to connect with your partner and really enjoy your dancing. \nNo partner or previous dancing experience required. Just come along and have some fun! \n WHAT IS IT SENSUAL BACHATA?\nSensual bachata was created in Cádiz\, Andalusia\, Spain\, by Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero. Korke learned the basics of bachata in 1998; then he started developing his own dance style by understanding how the leader (traditionally a man) could lead the body of the follower (traditionally a woman) to interpret the music. Sensual bachata is an independent dance form with strict lead and follow principles. The dance is an interpretation of the music with mostly circular movements and body waves. When the music has stronger beats\, however\, the dance also uses isolations and dips. \nPlease contact us for any more info you may require.

SUMMARY:Daring to Hope: Book Launch with Sheilah Rowbotham
DESCRIPTION:In this powerful memoir Sheila Rowbotham looks back at the women’s liberation movement\, left politics and the vibrant\, creative culture of a decade in which freedom and equality seemed possible. It is a riveting personal history of second wave feminism from the front line. \nAfter addressing the first Women’s Liberation Conference at Ruskin College\, Oxford\, in 1970\, she went on to encourage night cleaners to unionise\, immortalised in the film Nightcleaners\, to campaign for nurseries and abortion rights\, and to play an influential role in discussions of socialist feminist ideas. It is also an account of her attempt to live her politics: bringing to life meetings\, magazines\, child care networks\, grass roots movements\, along with communal houses and squats\, and a shared impetus to organize collectively and to love without jealousy or domination. By the middle of the decade her prolific writing – journalism and poetry as well as social history – had attracted a wide international readership. She describes the publication of Women\, Resistance and Revolution (1972)\, Hidden from History and Woman’s Consciousness\, Man’s World (1973)\, seminal works that were translated into many languages and remain in print half a century later. \nThrough this whole decade she charts the women’s liberation movement and its place within a larger politics\, including the decline of the Labour Party. As the decade ends\, with Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street\, the movement has started to fracture. Alongside others she tried to hold together the socialist feminist hopes with Beyond the Fragments. \nSheila Rowbotham\, who helped start the women’s liberation movement in Britain\, is known internationally as an historian of feminism and radical social movements. She is the author of the ground-breaking books Women\, Resistance and Revolution; Woman’s Consciousness\, Man’s World; and Hidden from History. Her later works include Promise of a Dream: Remembering the Sixties; Dreamers of a New Day: Women Who Invented the Twentieth Century; and the biography Edward Carpenter: A Life of Liberty and Love\, shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize and winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Biography. Her poetry and two plays have been published and she has written for newspapers and journals in Britain\, the US\, Italy\, Brazil\, Turkey\, Sweden and Sri Lanka. An Honorary Fellow of Manchester University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, she lives in Bristol. \nThis is a Bristol Transformed event.

SUMMARY:No Great Crime: Bristol's Arresting Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening night: Thursday 22 July\, 6-10pm\nOpening hours: Tuesday – Sunday\, 12-6pm \nWhen we first talked about hosting this show at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft\, we thought of it as a fringe event to the Vanguard exhibition at M Shed. Of course\, it’s not an official fringe show\, but with Vanguard exploring the council approved\, sanitised side of street art we thought it was a good opportunity to focus on the illegal roots of graffiti in Bristol. \nSince our inception in 2006\, PRSC has worked with all kinds of artists\, and seen many pieces illegally painted out with no justification or apology from the Council or Bristol Waste; we’ve seen the waste company make decisions about what should be kept and what should be buffed out\, and we’ve heard multiple stories of graffiti writers being stopped by the police when painting spots which officers from the same force have happily watched being painted many times before. Collectively we’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to convince the council that they should have some kind of policy to provide any kind of clarity\, but to no avail. \nSo\, what’s it actually like to paint on the streets of Bristol? With one hand the city provided its museum to Banksy (for what turned out to be their most successful exhibition ever) and with the other\, it harasses and criminalises his contemporaries\, upcoming artists and the very scene that spawned him. \nNo Great Crime: Bristol’s Arresting Art brings together a range of street artists and graff writers to show their diverse and inspiring work\, to tell their stories and to kickstart a conversation about how this city treats people engaged in its most famous art form. Some striking and beautiful pieces of Bristol street art\, including some from the PRSC’s own archives\, will be displayed alongside testimonials from local street artists about the realities of painting the Bristol streets\, and their brushes with the law. \nFeaturing art and stories from gHOSTbOY\, John D’oh\, Oshii\, Mike22\, Ryder\, Sepr\, Sickboy\, Skank\, T-Rex\, Tom Miller and more.
