In a very disappointing move, Bristol City Council recently voted to end Discretionary Business Rate Relief, meaning CICs and non-profits LIKE US are set to be slammed with another huge bill from April 2024. Small businesses trying to give back to the community will be liable for the same business rates as massive, profit-driven, global chains like Ted Baker, Apple and Fat Face.
This change is huge for a sector that, having faced so many of our costs skyrocketing recently, is already on the brink of survival. If it goes through as stated then it’s undoubtedly an existential threat for us and many other organisations who support vulnerable and creative communities around Bristol.
That doesn’t sit right with us, or Prior Shop who have launched a petition asking BCC to reinstate the rates relief.
