With a DJ dropping beats, b-boys and b-girls cutting shapes, and paint spattered graff writers drawing on the walls, this night will be a joyous Bristol flavoured celebration of all things Hip Hop. About the movie: 'A Way Of Life' gives prominence to a culture that has gone beyond music, providing an accessible platform of expression for millions of people across the globe. Shot over a span of two years in 15 locations worldwide 'A Way Of Life' explores Hip-Hop culture from music to graffiti, beat boxing and break-dancing. The film charts Hip-Hop's progression through it’s near 40 year existence from an underground subculture of New York “Bronx”, Highlights include Brazilian artist Emicida being arrested for performing his social, political song HipHop; the Ghanaian Hip Life scene; and Hip Hop being used to teach English and life skills in Cambodia. Biographies Industry #1 Industry #1 is an independent production company that uses film, music and art to entertain, inspire and educate its audience. Began in 2006 as an online platform to launch and promote artists from around the globe. The website showcased global Hip-Hop talent, featuring interviews & live reviews, before expanding to curate their own films and events. In 2013 Industry Number1 put together a number of global Hip Hop festivals in London and Geneva, Switzerland. The project took its present guise in 2012 as filming began for 'A Way Of Life' Global Hip Hop documentary. Shibe Alawiye (Director, Producer, Editor) Shibe Alawiye has been working in film production and broadcast for almost a decade, beginning his career as runner at Crow TV. He then went on to created his own production company Camerashai providing filming and editing services for films, documentaries and promos. Shibe was an editor for the BBC at Bestival and won Best Newcomer Award in 2006 at the Portobello Film Festival for his short film Our Fate, which led him on to creating, editing and producing the feature length documentary "Makers Our Story" released in both the US and UK. Andre Hopkin (Producer, Writer, Researcher Andre’s background is predominantly marketing, promotion and analytics. His journey started with a BA in Computer Science achieved at the Polytechnical University College in Stavanger. He then developed web based marketing and e- commerce solutions for various companies focusing with sales and analytics. In the last couple of years Andre has been setting up the Industry #1 site whilst filming at various events and festivals that have contributed to 'A Way Of Life' Global Hip-Hop documentary.

  • Food and farming is in crisis. In just over a decade we’ve lost more than 33,000 farms from our countryside, and alongside this, bad diet is now causing more health problems than smoking! The fundamental link between people, food and the very land we stand on is being broken. Yet it need not be this way. There is a growing movement of farmers and food workers who are creating vibrant farms, living soils, thriving food markets and a fairer food system for all. At the heart of all change lies a story, and In Our Hands is the story of a new kind of farm, a new kind of food and a new kind of society. This film has been created as an open source tool in order to debunk the myth of the industrial food system, and be a resource for farmers and activists in building a better world. A film by Black Bark Films made in association with the Landworkers' Alliance. Guest talks from Bristol growers will accompany the film screening to share developments in the local food scene.   • PRSC and Journey to Justice present Tell Them We Are Rising - The story of black colleges and universities in the US. With a talk from civil rights expert Madge Dresser, plus other guests to be confirmed. A haven for Black intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries—and path of promise toward the American dream—Black colleges and universities have educated the architects of freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field. They have been unapologetically Black for more than 150 years. For the first time ever, their story is told. Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson, Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities examines the impact Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have had on American history, culture, and national identity. Beginning with the earliest attempts at education to today’s campuses, the 90-minute film will air nationally on the acclaimed PBS series, Independent Lens on Monday, February 19, 2018. The project is funded with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Lumina Foundation. Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities is the second in a three-part series called America Revisited that includes The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, which was the most watched Independent Lens program ever, and the forthcoming, The Slave Trade: Creating A New World.

  • Alongside this film screening, PRSC welcomes Kat from the Bristol Cable to share the realities of cooperativism in Bristol today and Joel Lazarus from the Bristol Learning Coop about the possibilities of creating a cooperative college or university. Can We Do It Ourselves focuses on economic philosophy with an emphasis on the concept of economic democracy. The film helps viewers understand the difference between a market economy in which consumer demand drives a company's supply of goods and services, and a capitalist economy in which private owners control production and hold a right to the profits. There is strong support for the potential promise of a democratic economic model in which workers have more of a say in business operations than either market or capitalist models. Input from European and American economic experts as well as general consumers helps to unveil the complexities of these economic models by presenting the potential benefits and pitfalls of each. Many of the interview subjects argue in favor of greater democracy in the workforce, highlighting a need to establish a system that emphasizes the importance of workers' welfare.

  • "Concrete Soldiers Uk" tells the story of the destruction of council estates, the social cleansing of those who live there - and the inspiring resistance of tenants, leaseholders and other committed to the ongoing existence and availability of social housing. The screening will be accompanied by an exhibition on the London housing crisis from photographer Lisa Furness. The film, by Nikita Woolfe, focuses in particular on the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark, where the destruction is already underway, but is being challenged, and Central Hill and Cressingham Gardens in Lambeth, both threatened with destruction. In all three cases, residents are fighting back, and giving hope to others whose homes are threatened, both in London and across the UK. "Three years ago I was looking at all the new developments in London and was surprised to see how much of the construction happened on old council estate land. I started wondering why the councils wanted to sell off their valuable assets and whether there were alternatives.... That's how Concrete Soldiers UK began... - Three years later and Concrete Soldiers UK is not only answering my questions but it has also become a film about the fighting spirit that I encountered on the way. I was so impressed by people and their tireless campaigning in situations which often ended with a negative outcome. It's easy to see why people would become discouraged and just give up.
